Chapter 1: What are the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Heidi and Sven?
Remember, everyone must be presumed innocent unless found otherwise in a court of law. To protect privacy, names, locations, and even genders are changed throughout this podcast, but the context of what is said is not. unless otherwise stated, audio recordings exist of every witness you hear.
A reminder that everything you're hearing in the podcast today and in the coming episodes largely took place over two years ago. As we move through these episodes of Endgame, we will slowly catch back up to the present time. I would also like to add that throughout these episodes, there are going to be a lot of names redacted and voices distorted, or not heard at all.
Please understand, this is done for legal reasons and for the safety and privacy of those involved. on the last episode of Guilt, Finding Heidi Endgame.
Well, my guts tells me, yeah. But the facts are, they're hard to prove.
Chapter 2: How did David Tamihere become implicated in the case?
It's certainly hard to prove.
Hard to prove, mate, you know, like, and I've asked him three or four times about that, like, I looked him right in the eye, and he's fucking looked me back, and he said, nah. But then again, he's a pathological liar, so fucking who do you believe? not even thinking it was going to be Heidi. Fuck. And then she'd just come out with it. Mate, it just broke my heart. I get emotional about it.
But she says, oh, I don't know whether I should say names, you know, mate. But her brother had seen a certain person dragging someone by the hair that looked like Heidi down to the beach at Mataurau. I said to him, I put him to the question, I said, mate, did you really deal with those Swedes, brother?
And when he got out of the car, just tell me one thing, where is she? He knew exactly who I was talking about. I know shit that nobody wants to come out and have me open. And of all of us, I know it all.
From Brevity Studios, I'm Ryan Wolfe. And this is guilt.
It's got to be her. I'm just, I just feel like that's her. Okay, mic is on.

Chapter 3: What recent developments have emerged in the investigation?
Well, you know, as I say it all the time, this is an important interview right now. This person doesn't know I'm coming. I'm three minutes away. You know, thanks to James Turner, this person could hold the key, the actual key to where we're going to find Heidi. I'm just, I'm crossing all my fingers and toes right now that this is legit.
This is going to lead to the answers and hope for the best here. You know, it's possible that this person might just kick me out. I just really have no idea. I've no idea. I'm in a town in New Zealand. I've never even been in my life, I don't think. Ah, shit's gonna get me killed one day. Earlier today, James Turner picked up the phone and made a call that changed everything.
On that call, he told me that someone had recently told him a secret, a secret she'd kept for 20 years, that her brother had seen a certain person dragging someone by the hair that looked like Heidi down the beach. And now, I'm pulling into that person's driveway. She has absolutely no idea I'm coming, and I've never met nor spoken to her in my life. The location is remote.
Houses here are few and far between. I've never been to this part of the country before. And I've been sent here by James, on trust.
Chapter 4: Who is the key witness that might hold crucial information?
But I can't help thinking, this is one of the men Darren Old claims is responsible for the very murders I'm investigating. What if I'm driving into a trap? I'm coming alone, as I always do. Well, not fully alone. I've got my German Shepherd Achilles in the back seat. A real killer, I think, as his tongue rolls happily out of his mouth, head hanging out of the window in the breeze.
Still, he's the best backup I've got. This is definitely that moment in the movie where you're thinking, oh, this is such bullshit. No one would ever be so dumb to do this. And I'll admit, as I'm driving out here, that thought crosses my mind. One, two, three.
Oh man, I hope this goes well. I hope this goes well.
Fuck. Alright, alright, okay. Just lift properly.
I'm in a really backcountry road. Old houses and I've no idea where I am right now. Okay, I think, right, that's two cabins there. Is this the house?
Hello?
The audio from this meeting is not something I'm going to be able to share, so I'll explain what took place the best I can. As I walk up to the home, I call hello, and a woman walks out the door, phone held to her ear. When she sees me, she pauses. I'm trying to find someone, I say. She pauses a moment. Are you Ryan, she says. I am. James sent me, I reply.
I'm going to have to call you back, she says to the person on the phone.

Chapter 5: What significant evidence was uncovered regarding the case?
At this point, I can't say anything about this person's identity other than to say she is a credible source connected to the Turner family. She invites me inside, and we begin to sit and talk. James told me specifically not to mention that he told me about what she told him.
He instructed me to come to speak to her and said that perhaps if she trusted me, she would tell me what she told him without being prompted. And so that's what I did. And we talked for some time about the case and what I've been doing. And then eventually, after 30 minutes, she asks me, so do you believe she's in the swamp? I can tell you something.
And I can also tell you the person that told me. this person told me that they saw David Turner dragging a blonde-haired girl, she was alive at the time, down the beach at Matoda Bay. It was my brother that told me, and it just came out of nowhere. His exact words to me were, you know I seen that David Turner, eh? Dragging a blonde girl down the beach. I'm sure it was that Swedish chick.
When did he tell you this, I ask. Oh hell, it was years ago. We were just sitting like this, and there was no reason for it to come out. Like, no conversation about the Swedes. It wasn't in the news or anything. It wasn't even in the air. It just came out. What did you think at the time, I ask her.
Well, in all honesty, I could probably say, you know brother, you need to go to the police about that. But trust me, I know him, and I know that's never going to happen. Do you believe he was telling the truth, I ask. Oh, absolutely, absolutely, without a doubt. If I thought for one minute he might have made this up, I would tell you. I believe what my brother said, yes, without a doubt.
He just would not have said it if it wasn't true. As you can only imagine, my mind at this point is racing.

Chapter 6: How does the podcast creator navigate sensitive interviews?
Is this the piece of the puzzle I've been looking for? Am I about to crack this case? We speak for almost two hours, but before I leave, I ask about James, and whether she believes that he might have been involved in these murders as Darren Old has stated. And she tells me that she doubts it. I can't believe for one minute that Jimmy would be involved.
Look, Jimmy was the person where there's a fight in the pub because someone called someone a name or somebody cheated on the pool table. Then it's on. And yeah, Jimmy had inherited his father's knockout punch. There was never much of a fight because it would be over too quickly. But you know that's how Jimmy was. But Jimmy is a good soul.
You know, I don't think Darren is lying, but maybe he's not quite remembering right. Maybe he doesn't know the whole truth, but bits and pieces. I don't know. Achilles, my dog, is waiting patiently when I get back to the car, and I pull over down the road to let him go to the toilet.
And while I do this, there's only one thing going through my mind, and there's only one person I want to speak to right now. Her brother. However, she's told me that he's not the type of person who would ever cooperate with the police or a journalist. And the chances that he's going to speak to me openly and tell me what he told her is next to nil. But clearly, it's worth a shot.
so she gives me his number and wishes me luck. I get home to my office, sit down, look at the number, take a breath, and dial. And when he answers, he's surprised at who I am and where I've come from, seemingly out of the blue.
Oh, well, mate, I just spoke to a lady and here I am on the phone with someone looking for someone else. Now, it's like this. It goes like this. You've got a mystery to solve. I've got one. How did you get my number? I left here on Friday.

Chapter 7: What insights did the interviewee provide about the local community's knowledge?
Now, opposite me, but she's got a book. That book is about... Murders, all murder. Murders, okay? Someone else's, I've seen in the local paper where I live, someone came over here looking for more whatever, you know, because we all want that girl to go home, if that's the case, okay? So I talked to this lady next door. She's got a book. She's on podcast. She's got this thing in her ear talking.
I say something to her. I live next door to those people, David Tomahere. I've met a few people. All that. As well as, I know the fella that found the dude. All that. But there are a few bears. He's down home visiting my cousin. He's mates. But, of course, my cousin, he passed away too. Young fella, cancer. But I meet the fellas. I've found them. It's all in that book too, their names.
I don't have to mention names. It's all in the book.
Literally, minutes later, I'm in my car again, driving to what could be the most important meeting of this case and my life. When I arrive, my mic is rolling, but when I ask him if it's okay to record our conversation, he tells me to turn it off. From now on, I will refer to this man as Sam.
And when we sit down on opposite sides of a small table in a side room, I sense his mood has shifted since we spoke on the phone. First impressions are that he's lived a tough life, and from what I've been told, he's been in and out of prison over the years for various crimes, including assault. But I'm not getting the feeling that he's dangerous.
Instead, I quickly realize that he agreed to meet me in person because he wants to know who the fuck I am and why I'm asking these questions. He seems rattled by what I know and the questions I'm asking. He's very defensive and tells me, no, I never said that to her. I never saw what she's saying.
It seems my hopes of coming here today and perhaps finding that smoking gun and Heidi have been dashed with those words. But then he seems to soften just ever so slightly and says I did see that David Turner though. Yeah, he showed up around 2010 saying he was looking for something but it didn't sit right with me at the time. I don't know what he was looking for that day
He then pauses and looks at me.

Chapter 8: What are the implications of the new evidence on the case's future?
There is a skeleton out there though, eh? He says. What? You mean a human skeleton? I ask. Yeah. Someone found one years ago, he says, and I think it was packed up and reburied somewhere. So the police were never told about this, I ask. Nah, I don't think so. Do you think they could be Heidi's remains? I ask. Hmm, he pauses.
Well, I'm pretty sure they figured they were old historic bones, but yeah, I mean, who knows? I don't know much about them or who found them, but they're definitely there somewhere. I pack up my notebook and say goodbye, and as I drive home, I'm trying to process what's just happened.
I came here today to meet this man, in the hope he may have seen something and could break this case wide open, but he denied it. seemingly slamming the door in my face. But then, when he had perhaps weighed me up a bit more, he threw me just a crumb. He didn't see anything like his sister says, but, oh, by the way, there is a human skeleton there.
Naturally, the first thing I do when I get back to my office is call his sister. I tell her that he denied seeing David Turner dragging a blonde girl down the beach. And she pauses and tells me that she thought this might happen. But when I ask her... Are you sure? Are you really sure 100% that's what he said and that you believe him? She is adamant. Yes, that's what Sam said. I have no doubt.
It was out of the blue and completely random when he said it. Why would a person just come out of the blue and say this? And yes, I believe what he said was the truth. okay. Uh, I'm trying to make sense of everything that's happening at the moment.
Um, it's on one hand, it's like this crazy development, you know, it starts with James and he sends me to this woman who then sort of corroborates what James told me she said. Um, and then I go and follow up with her brother and he's very cagey. Um,
You know, he started off being kind of nice on the phone, but then when I met him in person, straight away, he was grilling me, how I found him and so on. And he denied, you know, he denied saying, he denied saying that he'd seen David Turner dragging a blonde down the beach, you know, or that blonde or whatever down the beach.
You know, and I kind of thought, shit, okay, well, I guess this is, you know, I'm just confused at this point. But then he adds this nugget, right? He sort of pauses, and I feel like he's weighing me up at this time, right? But he pauses and sort of says, but there is a skeleton out there. And I'm sort of like, what, you mean a human skeleton? He says, yeah.
You know, basically he's like, oh, yeah, I don't know much about it. But, yeah, there's a skeleton that was found out there and it got reburied.
