Hey, did you guys see the game last night? No. What happened? I missed all the action because I was... We know how busy your life can be. What happened?
You missed that? What happened?
We begin with the aforementioned Eastern Conference Final. It got underway yesterday in Carolina. The Montreal Canadiens scored four straight goals in the first period on Route 2A.
Chapter 6: Who are the standout players to watch for Canada in the World Cup?
Some would say shocking 6-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes, handing Carolina their first playoff defeat in the process. Jason?
I think it was shocking the way it played out. And I was a little surprised that... the Canes lost like that. I actually thought the Habs were going to have a tough time in game one. They had a tough time in game one against Buffalo after they had just finished off a seven-game series, very tough series against Tampa. They went into Buffalo on the road, and they didn't look like themselves.
I thought something similar might play out in Carolina. And it looked like I was right a minute into the game when the Canes had already scored and the place was loud. And I was like, Oh, I wonder if this is going to be a long night for Montreal. And then, uh,
What I did not expect was that crazy response from the Montreal Canadiens where they score four goals in the next, I don't know what, 10 to 15 minutes.
Passes four road goals in a playoff game in franchise history. They're setting all kinds of records this year.

Chapter 7: What challenges does Canada face in their group at the World Cup?
Montreal Canadiens and then I was like okay well I have to be right about something so I wondered if you know how I've got that theory where sometimes it's too good too early for a team yeah you know and you're like you're like oh this and then you know like the Canes so they score one nothing the place is going crazy maybe you're thinking Montreal is a little bit rattled and the Canes are like we're so good we haven't lost in these playoffs this is going to be easy
Then maybe they take their foot off the gas a little bit. Too good, too early. And I don't know if that is the case. I don't know. It's just a theory that I have sometimes. But, you know, the Canes were, they did not look good. And full credit to Montreal for the response, especially after going down early. And maybe now we talk about the goaltending.
Yeah, well, let's go right now to Rod Brindamore, who in his post-game media availability wasn't too thrilled with, quite frankly, any facet of their game. I'm going to play two Rod clips, actually. We will get to the goaltending. First, overall, collectively, despite the good start, Rod not happy. with his team's performance.
He said they were not at their best and they were not ready to play playoff hockey.
Chapter 8: What is the significance of the upcoming warm-up games for Canada?
As a matter of fact, here's what Rod had to say exactly following a 6-2 loss at home. Not just opening the Eastern Conference final with a loss, but as I mentioned, Carolina's first loss this postseason. Here's Rod Brindamore. Obviously, it was not our best. They made some nice plays. You give them credit. They finished. But I didn't think we were very sharp, to put it bluntly.
Our top guys had tough nights, and that's not going to work this time of the year. So chalk it up, you know, I think... I think we just tossed this game, to be honest. I hate that this time of year. That's what we got to do, but there wasn't much to really grab onto there. I think you get behind early like that. It's tough, but we clearly were not ready for that pace.
I'm not going to give the layoff as an excuse, but we weren't ready to play playoff hockey, and that caught us. And now we turn our attention to Freddie Anderson. After allowing five goals on 21 shots in the opener, Rod was quick to point out that it wasn't on Freddie.
There are a lot of one-on-ones, a lot of breakaway chances, not a lot of saves that he's supposed to make in there, but still five goals on 21 shots. Here's what Rod had to say about his goaltending following game one.
Did you give any mind to pulling Freddie?
No, I mean, we're giving up breakaways. I mean, I'm not going to blame him for breakaways. I mean, I thought maybe for a second just to give him a breather, but he's had a ton of rest, so it's actually the opposite. We need to get him probably up to speed, you know, more game action.
Now, I don't know if this organization collectively has some sort of phobia or fear or inability when they get to the conference finals. It's like the first two rounds we're good with. But as soon as we get to the conference final, we just stop remembering how to play hockey. We can't do any of the things that made us successful. Too much time off, man.
The night terrors begin as soon as the third round starts. Freddie Anderson going into this had a 4-10 career record in the conference finals. We all know about Carolina the last couple years in the conference final. And I know the layoff. They talked about it a lot.
Fridge wanted nothing to do with that theory. It cheapens the win by Montreal.
