So before we get to Frank very quickly, I do need to do the one to watch brought to you by Limitless AV. I kind of alluded to this earlier, but what the heck, I'm going to roll with it again. Today's one to watch is without question, Cristiano Ronaldo, him and his Portuguese team. They will be kicking off really quickly. As a matter of fact, 10 a.m.
our time, they are taking on the Democratic Republic of Congo. And in light of what happened yesterday, especially with Messi, you can almost guarantee that Ronaldo is going to be extra motivated to try and match the exploits of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, then capped off with the Messi hat trick yesterday. Again, that one kicks off at 10 a.m.
I don't think you can even put a total on the amount of attempts that Cristiano Ronaldo is going to have on net. I do believe sportsbooks have set the over-under at shot attempts, not shots on target, but attempts at four and a half. So there's something to pay attention to.
He's going over.
Yeah, by like 12. That is brought to you by Limitless AV, Vancouver's most trusted audio-visual integration experts specializing in seamless video conferencing solutions and hybrid workspaces. Chapter 2: What are the latest hockey trade rumors discussed by Frank Seravalli?
How are you? Pretty good. How are you guys doing? We are well. We're still in a little bit of shock that Jim Hiller has been named the 41st head coach in Toronto Maple Leafs franchise history. We had David Amber on in the previous hour. He said he was shocked. He thought it came out of left field.
What was your reaction this morning, Frank, upon hearing the news that Hiller, Jim Hiller, is the new head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Yeah, pretty surprised.
I mean, if you were to look at the coaching landscape heading into this and all the different people that the Toronto Maple Leafs had available to them, both experienced and completely inexperienced, it's just really interesting that they decided to go with a guy in Jim Hiller who, coming off of his very unimpressive run in Los Angeles, didn't really grab anyone's attention as a great head coaching candidate to dive right back in without missing a cycle.
And that part kind of surprised me. I mean, again, not advocating for anyone in particular, but you've got Jay Woodcroft on one hand, who has the best points percentage of any coach that's only ever worked in one tenure in league history, who then went and did a great job in Anaheim, getting that team back into the playoffs with Joel Quenville's staff. And he sits out the entirety of this cycle.
And Jim Hiller, who, I mean, no one can forget the coach's challenge from the first round series against Edmonton two years ago, plus basically some chirping from Kings players along the way about their boring system and structure, that this is the guy that ultimately gets selected as the next Leafs head coach.
So why do you think that John Shaka made this decision?
I think it's a few reasons. One, one of the Toronto Maple Leafs mandates was to get experience. I believe with John Chayka's relative lack of experience and having not worked in the game in six years, and the fact that Matt Sundin hasn't worked on this continent in a while and never in a front office role, that they needed someone who had been there and done it before.
So Hiller checks one box, but at the same time, I think the Leafs were very careful after having the style of coach that Craig Gruby was, and some of his predecessors, including Mike Babcock, that they wanted someone who provided a more gentle approach. And I think everyone's sort of looked at Jim Hiller as a gentleman and someone that is very respectful. So I think that box gets checked.

Chapter 3: How did Jim Hiller's appointment as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs surprise everyone?
And yes, Florida will be back next year and, and Tampa theoretically will be there. The Canadians and Sabres aren't going anywhere. It's not going to be easy, but. They should still win the metropolitan division pretty cleanly and clearly. And. They've got a window that's essentially open until 2031 with almost half their team signed to bargain deals.
Yeah. Speaking of Florida, what do you think they'll do in goal?
To me, the Bobrovsky question is the most interesting one of the entire summer. I know everyone's fixated on Dylan Larkin and what happens with some of these other potential trade requests. Of course, we're paying attention to that. But in terms of UFAs, this giant game of chicken going on between Florida Bob Brofsky and the Panthers. Um, look, Bob Brofsky, he's no dummy.
He, he, he looks at the market and he sees, well, Hey, Brad Martian got a long-term deal at my age and all these other long time Panthers have been taken care of with term, even though the AAVs aren't high, the term makes it add up to a pretty significant number. And yes, I'm the oldest of the group, but I'm also the only multi-time Vezina trophy winner that's available at the moment.
That to me, like he's got some real leverage here. Are the Panthers willing to sign up for, I don't know, what if it takes four years to get a deal done with Bobrovsky? Are you willing to pay the guy into his forties? And then if not, you better have a really solid alternative available to help backstop your team.
Follow-up question. What's going on with Connor Halibut in Winnipeg right now?
So that part has been less than clear. The Jets have totally clammed up. And the thought process was there's a very emotional Connor Halibut right after the season, which... A lot of people experience the frustration and anger of, Hey, we, we had a core that was competing and had a chance to win a cup, won a president's trophy, all these things that fell short this year in a big, big way.
And so the question is, is that window closed? Is it still available to them? How can they bounce back? And. it's hard to envision a path for them to bounce back and get back in the mix without Connor Hellebuck being part of it.
But I do think that how this year played out for a lot of us Olympic gold medal winners going back to their Canadian team, like the jets didn't honor his medal of freedom or whatever that was that he won. I was told that that rubbed him the wrong way that people looked at that and said, why wouldn't you acknowledge more so your player? And Austin Matthews ran into this a little bit as well.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of coaching changes in the NHL?
It's amazing, yeah. And you've got to be careful what you say about Ronaldo because you will weaponize the Ronaldo fans if they think that you're being anything but supportive of their boy. But you're right. He'll be anxious to get on the score sheet. And knowing him, he'll get on the score sheet as well. Whether it's for his team's long-term benefit, that can be debated perhaps.
But it's an exciting day for sure because he'll be up there and Harry Kane as well, you know, in action later. So the goals will be flowing again today, I'm pretty sure.
What do you make of all this caginess that's going on with the Canadian team right now around Alphonso Davies' status for the tournament, but specifically for Thursday against Qatar?
Well, I think it's unnecessary, but this is what every sports nation does, right? They like to overthink things and keep the other team guessing. And if we're confused as to his status, then certainly Qatar will be confused as to his status as well. The fact of the matter is he hasn't played for months.
If he did train yesterday fully, which I don't think he did, but if he did, that's the first time he's trained fully in months as well. So do you have a guy that's just hit the training pitch properly for the first time two days before a match, get some action? It'd be a gamble, right? I mean, it's good to have maybe him on the bench to put that seed of doubt into Qatar's mind.
But if maybe you're late in the game and you're down, you're desperate for goals, maybe that's the nuclear option if you have to do it. But It's too early for him, right? He shouldn't be playing football matches just yet. Maybe Switzerland is a more realistic target to get some minutes for him. But, yeah, I mean, this is what we do in soccer. The media gets lied to, and we're fine with that.
I guess it makes us feel a bit more important, a bit more like a real-life soccer nation.
How can Canada avoid against Qatar what happened to Switzerland against Qatar?
hopefully their goalkeeper doesn't pull in an all-world performance, which he's never done before in his career. That's part of it. Just finish your chances, right? Switzerland didn't finish well either. They create quite a few chances, but couldn't finish. And it comes down to that.
