Okay, let's get to our morning guest list. It's the Duik Morning Drive brought to you by the Duik Auto Group. It begins at 6.30 this morning. Greg Wyshynski from ESPN, our NHL insider, is going to join the program. Another OT decision in the Eastern Conference Final last night. Carolina takes a 2-1 series lead with a win in Montreal.
Chapter 4: How did the Carolina Hurricanes secure their lead in the Eastern Conference Final?
Tonight, Vegas looks to punch a ticket to the Stanley Cup Final. I'm going to try and complete the sweep against Colorado. So much to get into with Greg Wyshynski at 6.30 this morning. 7.30, James Myrtle, senior writer from The Athletic, is going to join the program. James is covering that Eastern Conference final, including last night's game in Montreal.
He also wrote a piece we will discuss today, titled, Have the Canadien Pulled Off the Best Quick-Turn Rebuild? in the NHL's cap era. I've joked that I don't even want to bring this up in Vancouver, but we're going to try anyway. We're going to tempt fate and talk to Myrtle at 7.30 this morning. 8 o'clock, Nathan Rourke's going to join the program, BC Lions quarterback.
Lions kicked off their preseason over the weekend. It was the Lions in Langford at Starlight Stadium, over 6,000 in attendance. It was a 34-16 loss to the Elks, but Nathan Rourke and almost all of the Lions starters did not play. What did Nathan see in the loss? Will he play in the second preseason game this Friday in Winnipeg? He's like, I didn't even watch it. Yeah, I wouldn't even go. He went.
He went. We'll talk to Nathan Rourke at 8 o'clock this morning. Finally. Day two of our White Spot $50 gift card giveaway this morning. Every day this week, we're giving one away at 8 o'clock. Be caller number 5604-280-0650. That number again, 604-280-0650. Make Tuesdays at White Spot your family tradition and enjoy a great deal on fish and chips. Fish and chips Tuesday, everybody.
$50 gift card to White Spot. Caller number 5604. this morning. That's what's happening on the program today. Without further ado, Laddie, let's tell everybody what happened.
Hey, did you guys see the game last night? No. What happened? I missed all the action because I was... We know how busy your life can be.
What happened? You missed that? What happened? We will begin in Montreal. Last night, it was Andrei Svechnikov, 14-06 of overtime. Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2 win in overtime. Carolina Hurricanes now leading 2-1 after three games in the Eastern Conference Final.
So the Habs had chances to win this. They had chances in overtime. I'm sure the most upset of their fans is probably like, and maybe if the referees had called that trip... On Hudson, they would have had a power play and could have won it there. Now, Carolina got a few calls as well in overtime because the referees decided to make no calls in overtime. None.
What was the deal on that too many men call? Yeah, I don't know. I think that was a makeup call for not calling the Hudson. They blew the whistle and then they were like... They're like, we just want to blow the whistle because it's fun.

Chapter 5: What insights does Greg Wyshynski share about the NHL playoffs?
Is it fun to play against? Not really. Is it fun to play if you're the Carolina Hurricanes?
Chapter 6: What key moments defined the recent game between the Hurricanes and Canadiens?
Nope. But it can be very, very effective. And the Hurricanes are now two games away from finally getting over the hump and getting to a Stanley Cup final. But the Habs... you know, have said, they say after the game, they're like, we know we can do more. And Marty St. Louis goes up there and says, we can be more effective in areas.
And, you know, Lane Hudson took the blame for the loss, which, you know, which was noble of him. But, you know, yeah, he made a mistake. But that certainly wasn't all on him last night because, you know, the Habs are playing at home.
They should be able to, I don't want to say should, but if they can't generate more energy, if they can't generate more chances against a very stingy Carolina team, they're not going to win this series.
Let's go now to Marty St. Louis. Here are some of those remarks Jason was talking about at the podium after a 3-2 loss. In overtime, dropping the Habs to 2-5 this postseason at the Bell Center. And this is now the first time this postseason that the Habs have lost consecutive games. Here's Marty St. Louis with his team now down 2-1 in the series.
I mean, you need everything working, you know, against a team like that. You know, I don't think you can just rely on the power play. Like, you got to defend when it's time to defend, which I don't think, you know, especially in that first period, I don't think we did a great job defending. You know, there's not one thing, but you have to put it all together.
You're at this stage right now, you have to put it all together. Execution's part of that. You know, jam is part of that. There's not one thing. We just got to put it all together. I know we can. You know, we didn't expect this to be, you know,
easy and we're okay with that so here's the interesting thing you'll notice in that clip that marty st louis doesn't mention the shot disparity or getting more shots on goal right he talked about we're gonna need to defend better and i didn't think we did a great job of that he talked about jam not like strawberry or some sort of marmalade he's talking about having a little bit more you know jam here's the interesting thing about all that in between games two and games three
St. Louis mentioned how one of the biggest mental challenges and hurdles in facing the Hurricanes is you have to accept the fact that you're going to be outshot.

Chapter 7: What challenges are the Canadiens facing against the Hurricanes?
And that's just because of how the Hurricanes play. He said there's almost no way around it. And the challenge is not to get overly caught up in shot disparity. I think he's going to need to readdress that approach because the Habs are not going to win any more games in this series, putting between 12 and 13 shots on net. The numbers right now are awful.
They've been outscored or outshot 92 to 47 through three games. They have 25 total shots in their last two games. Both of which went to overtime. And the last two games, maybe the most telling, was that through 40 minutes of Game 2 in Carolina, the Habs had a grand total of five shots on goal. That was awful.
Through 40 minutes of Game 3 on home ice, where you've got the crowd behind you in last change... They had 11 shots on that. It's nowhere near enough. And right now, they hold the dubious distinction of having the fewest shots on goal in a playoff game that required overtime. 12 and 13. The last two playoff games that they went to.
The only other team that ever had that few shots and got to overtime was the 1978 Chicago Blackhawks. It is not anywhere good enough.
And there's a lot of weird messaging coming out of the Montreal room because Slavkovsky had a weird remark, too, where he said, like, oh, we've got the recipe after game two to figure out how we're going to get more shots on goal in game three, to which I think a lot of the reporters last night were like, would you like to share that recipe with anyone? Would you like to bake that cake? Anybody.

Chapter 8: How are the NHL teams preparing for the upcoming Stanley Cup Final?
Anything. Because right now, they're getting smothered. And it's funny because whatever... Whatever they unlocked in game one feels like a distant memory now. And it's only two games prior. Whatever they locked in game one, whatever they got in game one feels like a distant memory.
Well, I think the Hurricanes, well, two things. They made some adjustments. And number two, they just played better. They didn't play very well in game two or in game one.
St. Louis did get away from that hard match, though, yesterday. They had Stahl going hard matching against Suzuki. And that didn't bode well for Suzuki. He got kind of smothered in game two. Yesterday, St. Louis was able to get him away from Stahl. But Montreal right now. And look, this is no condemnation of Montreal. They've had a great season. They've got a very talented young team.
They're going up against a very difficult opponent. But right now, their offense consists of, let's hope we get on the power play. Let's pray that we get something out of that top line. But there's really a lack of punch right now from everywhere else in the lineup.
And... Carolina's good.
Carolina's a very good team. They're a good team. Begrudgingly, I will admit.
And they are not everyone's cup of tea, but they're very good. And they are very motivated right now. You can see it, right? To get over the hump and get into a Stanley Cup final because, you know, they could win the Stanley Cup. Very, very... Not easily, but, you know, this is...
This is a team that has been at it for a while and they've had good teams and they've made it to the second round and made it to the conference final. But conference finals, sometimes the second rounds have just not gone well for them. And now they can smell it. And that's only going to make them commit to their system even more.
It's possible that Montreal just doesn't have the horses to get this thing done. It's possible. But it's disappointing. I mean, not if you're a Carolina Hurricanes fan, but I think we were all kind of dreaming about, frankly, a Montreal-Colorado Stanley Cup final.
