Chapter 4: What changes did the Flyers make after the Olympic break?
Charlie O'Connor joins us now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Morning, Charlie. How are you? Doing okay.
How you doing, guys?
We're well. Thanks for taking the time to do this. So the audio that we played coming back from break, that was Dan Vladar's big save in the shootout yesterday as the Flyers erased a 2-0 deficit, got the win on home ice in the shootout, and punched their ticket to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. It's funny.
We got the highlights on our screen in studio here right now, and I watched the postgame reaction.
Chapter 5: Who has been the standout player that helped the Flyers succeed?
it was electric in Philadelphia. They, they panned over to the bench and Rick Talkett and his coaching staff, huge embrace and hug and jumping up and down. How exciting was it yesterday, Charlie, to watch the Flyers snap this fairly lengthy playoff drought and get back into the dance.
Yeah. Yeah. It was a, it was something special. I will say, you know, the, this Flyers team has been through a lot. Flyers organization has been through a lot and, you know, for years and years, I know they've only won two Stanley Cups, but the Flyers for a long time were one of those teams that you just expected was going to be good every year.
They kind of had that place in Philadelphia, you know, especially in comparison to some of the other teams who, you know, Philadelphia Phillies have the most losses of any professional, major professional sports team in North America.
Chapter 6: What are the expectations for the Flyers in the upcoming playoffs?
Like, There was always a feeling like, well, the Flyers are always going to be good. And really, for the last 15 years, they mostly haven't been. You know, the 2010s were a little bit more like mediocrity. They would make the playoffs one year, losing the first round, miss the playoffs, make the playoffs the next year, losing the first round.
But that was even better than what they've gotten in the 2020s. If they had missed the playoffs this year, this would have been the longest playoff drought in franchise history. It would have been six consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. And for a large portion of the season, it looked like they were going to miss. You know, they kind of fell apart in January.
Chapter 7: How does the Flyers-Penguins rivalry shape the playoff narrative?
They dealt with some injuries. There were defensive issues. There was some, you know, off-ice controversies with regards to the Mopi Mishkoff and Rick Tockett. It was tough, but give these guys all the credit in the world. Over the Olympic break, they found a way to reset. They got healthy. They got more energy. Rick Tockett made some structural changes. He made some key lineup changes.
And they just stormed out of the gate after the Olympic break and played their best hockey of the season.
Chapter 8: What questions do fans have about the Flyers' playoff strategy?
There was a point on March 10th where ā They were nine points out of a playoff spot. They were 10 points out of the playoff spot that they would ultimately get, which was the third seed in the Metro. Teams don't pick up that many points in a month. It just doesn't happen, especially with, you know, the loser point and how close things are in terms of parity in the NHL these days.
And the Flyers earned their way. And now they've got help. You know, the New York Islanders, the Columbus Blue Jackets both collapsed over the stretch and If they would have held serve, the Flyers wouldn't have mattered how well they did.
But the Flyers played well enough to put themselves into a position to take advantage of the collapses of the other teams in front of them, enough of the other teams in front of them. And now they're back in the playoffs. And I can tell you that the fans were as excited as I've seen them in a long time. That place was as loud as I've heard it in a long time. And
Not to say that everything else is gravy. Fans are still going to want them to make a run in the playoffs. Surely the players do too. But it does feel like this season is now already a success because this wasn't necessarily expected.
Is there still criticism of Rick Tockett or are those critics just taking a short break?
I would say that there are still people who don't like him, but they have gone relatively quiet. Most people have been happy with what he's done, particularly since the Olympic break. And, and to be fair, I mean, there were changes made and some of those changes were things that fans had wanted for a long time.
You know, Mati Mishkov was moved from left wing, which is where we're talking about him playing since November, back to his natural right wing spot. Trevor Zegers was moved to the middle, which went a long way towards improving the Flyers down the middle and addressing a key weakness. They made some structural tweaks with the offense, played a little bit more of a rush-based game.
So it was easy for a lot of fans to kind of let bygones be bygones with Taka when a lot of the changes he made were things that they wanted him to make for months. But I think in the end, where a lot of this anger came from, where a lot of this frustration with Taka came from was
it was just general frustration with the state of the franchise and the team and, and this, and this long playoff drought, like talking was just kind of in the way in a lot of ways. I mean, some of it, you know, was, was things that he specifically did to be sure, namely, you know, the fact that Mafia Mishkoff was having a disappointing sophomore season and, talk.
