Before we get to Oliver real quickly, the one to watch brought to you by Limitless AV. It's back just in time for the World Cup. Look, in just a few hours time, you're going to get to see Luminium all in Spain. They kick off at 9 a.m. our time. against Cape Verde in what could be a very one-sided match.
In the studio right now, we're watching highlights of the other very one-sided match of the tournament thus far. Germany, Curacao, which was briefly a 1-1 game, ended up 7-1 for Germany. I'm wondering if we could see the same scoreline or something similar from Spain and Cape Verde today.
Was Curacao just like, we scored, that's all that matters? What was the final score? It doesn't matter. We scored a goal.
Kinda.
It's awesome. They were very excited. Can you believe we're at the World Cup? Let alone scoring a goal against Germany?
in a very emotional moment, their manager, Dick Advocate, was in tears after watching them score because this is the smallest nation to ever compete in a World Cup. Then they got to the first hydration break and it got decidedly worse for Curacao after that. Did the Germans poison them? They were like, you know what, with goals. Yes, they poisoned them with goals.

Chapter 2: What insights does Oliver Platt provide about Team Canada at the World Cup?
I actually thought Kolasinac, until he seemed to tire the last 20 minutes or so, the Bosnia left back, had a very good game and kind of shut Sajan Buchanan down to a certain extent. Buchanan, again, I would put him not quite in the David category, but similar in that you have to give him another go, I think. I don't think you want to kind of
be too reactionary with a player like that and dent kind of his confidence by taking him out of the team. So I'd expect Buchanan to continue, but Miller, I think, was always kind of probably more of an impact sub who was a stopgap until Ali Ahmed could get healthy.
And it looks like from the impact Ahmed made off the bench that, you know, he's a player who looks pretty good to go from the start, I would think, this week.
What did you think of Luke Dufusio on the back?
Yeah, I can't believe... you know, how he keeps doing it. 20 years old, still like one season of first team experience in Belgium.

Chapter 3: How did Canada perform in their match against Bosnia?
He's someone, you just don't see that very often, right? A player who has, you know, not really made the breakthrough at a high level in terms of his club football, play at the level he does for his country. But it's not new. It's not the first time he's done this. We've seen it at tournaments in the past. We got an early glimpse of it when he was just 18 at Copa America two years ago.
And I think that's been the key. Like, I give credit to Jesse Marsh for this. He brought him in very early, saw a player there. And I think because he's been with the men's national team for two years now, that's prepared him for this. I don't know necessarily that his club career to date has prepared him for this, but it's his international career.
that has and yeah just an absolute warrior as composed and kind of classy as he looks on the ball someone who doesn't shy away from the physical challenges particularly against a team like Bosnia you saw him at the end he like batted and bruised but he came through it and played very well again
Do you have any concern, I guess, where's your concern level about D'Fusio and Alistair Johnson both being on yellows? For those that are unaware, two yellows in two separate matches, you sit the third, and then that could end up being the Switzerland match.
I bring this up in part because we all know the situation of Canada's backline and the lack of health that they have with Bombito hurt and Davies hurt. So where's your concern level about the yellow card accumulation thus far?
Yeah, they're going to have to be careful for sure. I think Dufus role is the bigger worry than Johnston probably just because you have Nico Seager in reserve at right back, as good a player as Johnston obviously is. So that's a concern.
And I think particularly because of the Switzerland Qatar result, like I think the way this has been characterized, which is probably about right, is it increases Canada's chances of winning the group, but it also means you have to look over your shoulder a little bit more at third and fourth place where you, you know, Even if you go through in thirds, you want to be in the top two in this group.
And obviously you want to avoid any chance of missing out entirely on the knockout stage. So that I think has added to the weight on particularly the third game against Switzerland. So, yeah, they're going to have to be careful in this one. Johnston, I thought occasionally there's a rash tackle in him, and we saw that against Bosnia. Otherwise, I thought he played very well.
That is something to monitor for sure in this week's game.

Chapter 4: What challenges does Canada face in their upcoming game against Qatar?
And what we've seen so far, we'll see if it changes this week in Vancouver. Alphonso Davies isn't training at all with the team. You know, he's always with his personal kind of trainer who's come over from Germany with him and basically just running and doing light ball work and stretching. So that doesn't seem to me like a player who's particularly close.
But, you know, you hear kind of murmurs from within the camp that maybe he's closer than people think. So we'll see. I have no idea at this point.
Oliver, this was great. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this today. We appreciate it.
Chapter 5: What strategies can Canada use to improve their performance against Qatar?
Enjoy the match on Thursday. Let's get caught up later on as the tournament goes along. Thanks, guys. For sure. Have a good one. Thank you. That's Oliver Platt from One Soccer here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
The World Cup has looked good so far. I love the Europeans that are just amazed at the stadium. The stadia? In the United States. Yeah. I guess there was, they played a game in Houston and people were like, this is surely the greatest stadium of all time. It's like, yeah, we don't even really think about that stadium much.
It is hilarious, right? The Netherlands-Japan match, which most people thus far have said is the best match of the tournament so far, early days and everything, but it was a 2-2 draw. It was fantastic. That was played at GeraDome, GeraWorld in Dallas. And the guy that was doing play-by-play, I forget his name at the moment, and I apologize, but... He was just raving about the stadium.
He's like, this is the most majestic stadium I've ever been to. And you got to understand, for all of America's flaws, these gargantuan, state-of-the-art, all the bells and whistles, no expense spared facilities are unlike anything in the world.
Yep. It's, I mean, I don't... That's America, right? Yeah. To host a sporting event of this magnitude. It's big. Yeah. It's bold. And, you know, the United States is a very good host of these types of tournaments. And, you know, when you think about the stadiums in Canada, comparatively, I mean, Toronto's stadium...
It's frankly a bit embarrassing, but they had to have some games in Toronto, I guess. It's the biggest city by far in Canada, but their stadium is, you know, it looks like it's hosting a great cup right now. Scaffold City. You know, BC Place is the only thing that really comes close to anything in the United States. And BC Place is, you know, I think it looks good. I think it looked really good.
But it's nothing compared to SoFi Stadium. I mean, SoFi Stadium is amazing. It's incredible. And then, you know, the point about Houston is like, what's it called? Energy Stadium or whatever. NRG. NRG, right? Yeah. That's just like... Yeah, it's a stadium. It's a place we got. It's just a thing we got. It's just one of the things. The Houston Texans play there.
It's a good way of putting it, actually. It's all right. Yeah, we got one of those. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just not a big deal. And, you know, I think... You know, it's fun to see the Europeans come over and just be like, you know, we make fun of you a lot.
I sure do like your stadiums.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of Jonathan David's current form for the Canadian team?
So I know Sean's waiting patiently on hold, but I was like, do you remember the one time we went, and it was a table of Finnish hockey writers. I think they might have been from NHL.com or elsewhere, but I have never seen a collection of empty beer bottles on a singular banquet table in my life. There had to be at least 100, and there was only six Finnish guys there. It was incredible.
Yeah, it's hard enough to talk to those guys when they're not 30 Bud Lights into the conversation.
Yeah. And they're like, in Finland, Bud Lights are basically water. Well, they are. Yeah, they're everywhere, but especially with the Finns. Anyway, it was a fun time. But somehow, somehow we were able to connect with Sean. And Sean Gentile, fresh off watching Carolina win the Stanley Cup last night from the Athletic, joins us here now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Morning, Sean.
How are you?
Fellas, how we doing? It was not quite a... Not quite a... a Finnish writer-level drinking night last night. Thank God, but yeah.
Greetings. You sound super enthused and energetic. Let's start with the big story from last night. Carolina wins its first Stanley Cup since 2006. You covered this series from the beginning to the end. Through the first four games, we thought we were seeing an all-timer, a classic Stanley Cup final. It didn't necessarily end up that way.
Is it fair to suggest that maybe, just maybe, Vegas ran out of a little bit of steam and gas as this thing went along? Oh, absolutely. We watched it happen.
You know, we can trace the Mitch Marner-Khan-Smith narrative for the proof of that, right? Like, we watched... natural hat trick game three, yada, yada. Everyone's, everyone's losing their minds talking about him winning the, winning the con, even if they don't win the cup. And, you know, it's not the way it worked out. Right.
I think that's, you know, that his, his series kind of worked in lockstep with the rest of the team because we're like, Oh, Oh my God. Like, what, what are we watching here? And it, as it turns out, you know, he disappeared over, over the last few games and, and, So did Vegas' chances overall.
