Yeah, it was a terrific Masters and a riveting Sunday with all the lead changes, but Rory was always in the mix. And when Justin Rose fell off in the back nine, it was Rory's to lose as long... as he held off world number one Scotty Scheffler, which McElroy did by a single stroke.
Chapter 4: What is the current state of the Detroit Red Wings?
Scotty went 65-68 on the weekend, which is pretty darn good. But one shot short of Rory McElroy.
Let's go now to the Able Auctions hotline. As mentioned, our next guest, host Sirius XMPGA Tour Radio, Jason Sobel joins us now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Morning, Jason. How are you?
Chapter 5: What does Rory's victory mean for his career?
I'm doing great. Good morning, guys. What a weekend that was, huh?
It was unbelievable. I mean, how many guys held the lead on Sunday? Three or four?
yeah uh maybe more at one point i think we had a five-way tie or we could have had a five-way tie and the twists and turns are unbelievable and uh we at one point going into the weekend we're back where i had a six-shot lead i thought okay maybe this is gonna be a coronation maybe the weekend won't have that much trouble but when rory mcelroy is involved it never gets boring uh i go back to the fourth hole
He's three putts for double bogey from about 10 feet. You're like, it's not his day.
Chapter 6: What factors contributed to the Red Wings' disappointing season?
He's not going to do it again. And then on 12, he has this great shot on a hole that nobody has a great shot on. And he makes birdies. Okay, it's going to be Rory. And then on 18, he pushes one way right off the tee. You're like, I don't know, maybe it's not his day. What's going to happen? And he winds up making bogey and winning.
But it was never boring, always interesting, always exciting when Rory McIlroy is involved.
The par 3 12th hole was, I think, the star hole of Sunday because, like you said, Rory went at the flag when everyone knows you're supposed to just put it in the middle of the green two-putt and get the hell out of there. Did he mean to take that line?
Chapter 7: What changes might the Red Wings consider for the offseason?
He must have been asked about it after the round.
He was, and he was a little coy about it. I think that was... Sort of the line, and maybe it got a good kick and went a little further right and closer to the hole that he had intended, but he was certainly happy to be inside 10 feet, make a birdie on that one. Look, that line is so aggressive that... If you're in 45th place, you're probably not taking that line.
For the leader of the golf tournament to take that line as opposed to going back left and trying to just run out of there with a par is fairly shocking. But look, that's what it takes to win major championships. Rory, I thought, was very gutsy in that moment. He talked all week about being unburdened, about playing with some freedom after winning the Masters last year.
I wonder if that's a shot that Rory would have hit if he hadn't had a green jacket waiting for him already back in the clubhouse.
Chapter 8: How do the Red Wings compare to other teams in the NHL?
Well, one guy who did not hit that shot and a guy who does not have a green jacket is Justin Rose. He went long and left on that and then chunked his chip shot. And that was very relatable to me. I was like, I've done that. I do that 10 times around. You don't really see that very often from PGA Tour players. What did you think about that?
And just the back nine from Justin Rose, who I think a lot of people at Augusta were rooting for.
Yeah, they certainly will, and there's a reason for that. At 45 years old, he has been so classy over the last year, talking about losing in a playoff to Rory McIlroy. We all celebrated Rory McIlroy finally winning the Masters and capturing the career Grand Slam. I think what got lost in the story last year was the fact that Justin Rose has come so close so many times.
Yes, he has one major championship at the 2008 13 U.S. Open, but looking for that elusive Masters and just so classy talking about it, not only over the past year, but even this week. I spoke with him a few times and just very eloquent speaking about how much it means to him and how much he'd love to get back into that moment. And you're right, Amen Corner essentially did him in.
It was a sloppy bogey on 11. It was a really sloppy bogey on 12. Quite frankly, it was a sloppy par, if that makes sense, on 13. He had a great second shot into the par 5, got a little too aggressive with his eagle putt, didn't make the comebacker for birdie, and was sort of out of it at that point. That said, great stuff from Justin Rose.
I'm in awe of what he's been able to do over the last five years. At a time when golfers are trending younger, when we see guys half his age contending for major championships now at 45, for him to be doing what he's doing is really impressive.
The way that Scotty Scheffler finished the tournament with his weekend, do we now have to watch out for Scotty Scheffler?
I think we always have to watch out for Scotty Scheffler. That said... Yeah, look, he's starting to trend in the right direction. He came into the Masters with three straight finishes outside the top ten, which that's okay for any other mere mortal in the game of golf, but for Scottie Scheffler, that's way below his standard.
Didn't get a chance to play at Houston two weeks before due to the arrival of his second child, and then came out a little cold and looked a little rusty in the first couple of rounds, 70-74. Then, as you mentioned, Didn't make a bogey the entire weekend. Played some terrific golf. He's going right down the road to play the RBC Heritage this week. And I think for Scottie, it's all systems go now.
