Chapter 1: What insights does Chris Peters share about the NHL Draft Lottery?

0.031 - 27.161 Unknown

every copy of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery has been checked out from the Springfield Public Library of course the book does not contain any hints on how to win the lottery it is rather a chilling tale of conformity gone mad 804 on a Tuesday. Happy Tuesday, everybody.

That was a running gig where he kept throwing books into the fireplace that season. We should really stop throwing books in that fireplace.

0

87.528 - 97.771 Chris Peters

I'm doing well guys, just over here, just running tank. It's on every five minutes just to see if I can get a jump on the night. But, uh, just keeps coming up with different teams. So I don't know if this is going to help me at all.

Chapter 3: What factors influence the first overall pick in the NHL Draft?

97.932 - 115.214 Unknown

You're like everyone in Vancouver. If you've been doing this since February, that's kind of what our existence has been like for the last few months. And now it all finally comes to fruition tonight. Four o'clock is when we'll find out our time. Anyway, how the draft will unfold. Let's just go right to the players that are at the top of this draft.

0

115.635 - 126.109 Unknown

If you are an NHL general manager, Chris, and you win the first overall selection at tonight's NHL draft lottery tonight, Do you already know who you're taking with the first overall pick?

0

128.272 - 143.432 Chris Peters

Yeah. Yeah, I do. I mean, I may not feel like amazing about it, but I feel good, feel good enough. So that's good. You know, like I think, I think we're, we're, we kind of have all the information that we're going to get aside from maybe the men's world championship when we'll see things.

0

143.452 - 152.044 Chris Peters

But for me, you know, I, I think as I've gone through the process, you go up, you go down, you go all over, you know, what do you come back to? And I think, you know, you,

0

Chapter 4: How does Chris evaluate Gavin McKenna's potential as a number one pick?

152.277 - 174.853 Chris Peters

If you're picking number one, you want to try to hit the biggest home run that you can. I think in this draft, really, there's not many players that can do that for you, but Gavin McKenna can. I think that that's probably, for me, the place where I feel safest to take the number one pick. You've got the most dynamic talents in the draft. You've got a guy that has a track record of production.

0

174.913 - 195.416 Chris Peters

He's done it at multiple levels. there are definitely holes and warts in his game, but there are things that, you know, you hope with some maturity, strength, other things, you know, you can kind of pull out of him over time. You know, the issues that are in his game are not related to, you know, hockey sense, which if that was a big red flag, that would give me a lot more concern, you know?

0

195.476 - 209.126 Chris Peters

So I think there are other things that he can do to elevate his game. And, you know, I think the ceiling for him is probably higher than most players. We're talking about a potential, you know, you know, top scorer in the league, a guy that I think can be an all-star.

0

210.027 - 231.475 Chris Peters

So, you know, I do think that there's that, but there's definitely, you know, issues with his game that I think are, have raised enough concerns over the course of the season that, you know, I think you have to tread carefully and you have to be really smart about how you're developing this player, where you're putting them, the situations you're putting them in, and just making sure that he's positioned the best way for success, because obviously it's a critical pick.

0

231.674 - 235.02 Unknown

I'm glad you mentioned the worlds. Jason's talked about it a few times.

Chapter 5: What aspects of McKenna's game should scouts focus on during the World Championships?

235.06 - 248.304 Unknown

I like, I mean, it's a tournament that we always are a little bit intrigued by, but the playoffs are going on, but this year, obviously, especially for Canucks fans, it takes on a great level of importance and not just because of McKenna, but also Stenberg is going to be there as well.

0

248.324 - 264.828 Unknown

And maybe we'll get this, you know, Ballyhooed matchup where the two get to face off against one another in some kind of meaningful competition. But yeah, on their own individually in terms of what they want to accomplish. And I think more importantly, what scouts want to see. If you had to pick one thing, let's start with McKenna here.

0

265.168 - 275.56 Unknown

What do you want to see from McKenna in this environment, playing with NHL players, playing at a relatively high stakes tournament ahead of the NHL entry draft in June?

0

277.022 - 294.239 Chris Peters

Yeah, you know, I think it's probably just, you know, I wouldn't want him to change a ton, right? You know, I wouldn't want to see anything that I hadn't really seen. And over the course of the year, I want to see him, you know, trying to push the pace offensively, trying to make plays one-on-one. You know, those are things that I think he can do even at that level.

0

295 - 303.751 Chris Peters

You know, how does he, you know, thrive or not with top players? You know, and we'll have to see what his role looks like. You know, younger guys, it can be tough.

Chapter 6: How does Caleb Malhotra's draft stock compare to other prospects?

303.911 - 322.59 Chris Peters

You know, Porter Martone really didn't get into much game action until late in the tournament last year. And, you know, But I think that this is a valuable experience for Gavin, regardless of how he plays, because it's being around the pros and being around, seeing how guys carry themselves, seeing the level that it takes to be a top player.

0

322.73 - 339.05 Chris Peters

And I think, you know, there's going to be enough talent on this Canadian team where you can kind of insulate him well, put him with some good players, put him in some positions to succeed. And then, you know, I think that that's what we'd want to see. It's just, you know, I don't need him. You know, one of the knocks on him is that he can be a little bit too perimeter.

0

339.07 - 354.167 Chris Peters

You know, I don't necessarily need to see him dive bombing into the middle of the ice against pros. You know, like it's not really. Let's go for it. That's not going to change my opinion of the player, right? You know, so it's really, you know, I want to see where things go. And there's definitely more that he needs to work on.

0

354.187 - 364.399 Chris Peters

But I think for him, it's playing his identity, fitting into whatever role they put him into, you know, being mature and making some plays out there because he's certainly capable of that.

0

Chapter 7: What challenges do scouts face when evaluating players from different leagues?

364.548 - 367.712 Mike Halford

Does he push the pace? Does he take on guys one-on-one?

0

369.555 - 392.227 Chris Peters

I mean, yeah. His skating isn't amazing. He's not necessarily going to be a guy that's going to turn things up speed-wise. I feel like as a younger player and certainly at the junior level, he was able to take guys wide a little bit more and do some of those things and do that. But I think in terms of one-on-one skills, drawing players into him, making plays, he definitely does that.

0

392.367 - 412.652 Chris Peters

I think that's really... His hands are good enough to beat a guy one-on-one. But I think he's usually looking to distribute. And I think the one thing that I would worry about in this setting is all of a sudden you're way too deferential and you're always looking – to make the play when, you know, whatever, you know, whatever play for the veteran as opposed to taking some plays for yourself.

0

412.712 - 416.477 Chris Peters

So we'll see where that all ends up when he gets into some game action.

0

416.697 - 426.73 Mike Halford

Have you thought about the possibility of Chicago or San Jose winning the draft lottery and either he's got Bedard to feed the puck to or Celebrini to feed the puck to?

426.97 - 431.596 Chris Peters

I probably haven't thought about it as much as Vancouver Canucks have dreamt about it in their nightmares.

Chapter 8: What final thoughts do the hosts share about the implications of the draft for the Canucks?

431.616 - 455.041 Chris Peters

So, yeah, I certainly think that he's a player that I think will make scores better around him. I don't think that he's an amazing goal scorer himself, but he is an excellent distributor. He has great vision. He's going to be a power play asset to wherever he's at. A lot of his production this year was on the power play.

0

455.382 - 478.793 Chris Peters

It's probably where a lot of his production is going to be at the next level. You add a distributor like him to some of those other teams and It certainly helps because you know that Celebrini doesn't need a driver. He needs a little bit of help. That's a great spot for a player like McKenna to end up, and you've got more high-end talent in that group. And the same thing with Chicago.

0

478.813 - 490.405 Chris Peters

I think that if you go into any one of those situations where you don't have to be the guy, I think that's a better spot for him developmentally than being the spot where you have to be the guy pretty quickly.

0

490.722 - 522.93 Mike Halford

I want to talk a little bit about Caleb Malhotra because I don't think we've talked much about Malhotra with you, maybe a little bit, but we've been focused on, you know, McKenna, Stenberg, Verhoff, but Malhotra stock... is just going through the roof right now. And I'm wondering, let's say the Canucks pick second overall. How much of a reach would it be if Caleb Malhotra went second overall?

0

524.672 - 540.432 Chris Peters

I don't really think it'd be much of a reach at this point. You know, I don't think that, I think once you get through this next phase of, you know, the top of the draft, there's not a ton of separation. This isn't a Celebrini situation where there was a gulf between him and number two.

540.713 - 560.672 Chris Peters

This is a situation where the clump of players that we're talking about, really probably even up to seven, are not separated by a lot. And so I think in this situation, you look at the way that Malhotra has played, the way he has built over the course of the season, the fact that he played his best hockey in the playoffs,

561.243 - 586.998 Chris Peters

for a Brantford team whose season just ended shockingly last night in game seven. It was the best team in junior hockey for most of the season. And, you know, that's a player that I think, you know, a lot of teams are having that conversation now because he is a center. He does have enough size. There's nothing that makes you super excited in terms of, like, you know, high-end skill.

587.058 - 590.423 Chris Peters

Like, he's one of those players that just does everything right.

590.723 - 614.908 Chris Peters

well and he plays on the PK he he wins draws he you know he does all those things that I think you want to see from a center so to me two is absolutely feasible for him now I probably wouldn't have said that a month ago but just the way that he's built up and talking to enough NHL teams I think that he's going to be very high on a lot of lists and they're very well could be a few teams where he's two and I think teams that are you know looking for centers are
