What is group chat etiquette and why is it important?

Lucy Jackson 0:02
A listener production. This is Happier with Lucy and Nikki. And if you're easily offended, then this might not be for you. He was the only guy joining. It made sense at the time to make a group chat with him and my girlfriends to organise logistics. The weekend away has now been and gone, but now the chat seems to have replaced the one with just my girlfriends. And not only is he still in there, but he's become extremely active. Oh, bless his cocky socks.
Nikki Westcott 0:36
Cheers, babes. Talking happy hour with Lucy and Nikki, the real life shit you only discuss over a drink. But before we start, a little disclaimer.
Lucy Jackson 0:42
So today we are here to talk about group chat etiquette part two.
Nikki Westcott 0:47
Yes, because believe it or not, there's fucking a lot to unpack here. There is.
Lucy Jackson 0:51
And honestly, so many people have written in and they've kind of been like, oh, I feel like I'm on the outs with my group chat. And I'm like, I think... Fridge is a two-way street, my dudes. Yeah.
Nikki Westcott 1:02
I think that's like... There's a lot of self-awareness from some and then not really much from others. Yeah. I would say. I think people like you just can also be like confidence and stuff and like... I think... And, you know, it's easy for us to be like, just fucking go with the dish. But, like, if you've got that impending nerves about extending the olive branch or thinking you're invited and stuff, like, that would be hard to overcome. Like, thinking you're not invited, more importantly. That's what I mean. Yeah. But, yeah, I don't know. Sometimes you just got to put yourself out there. Like, if you're in the group chat, you're invited, babe. Right? Yeah. Just in it. Or, like... If you're getting the vibes, like don't worry about it.
Nikki Westcott 1:41
You're literally in the group chat. And if the group chat's still active and firing and plans are being made, you're in. You're in. Yeah. Like if the group chat's dormant and you see everyone hanging out, you're out.
Lucy Jackson 1:50
Yeah, exactly. It's really not that deep.

How do I handle feeling left out of a group chat?

Lucy Jackson 1:54
Yeah. I think as well, people can get really, I don't know, really sensitive and hyper like, oh, maybe because they didn't like send me a personal message, maybe I'm not invited and stuff. And like, you've got to remember too, sometimes like everyone's busy. Yeah. And it's not like... If you're like a bit of an insecure person or you've like got a bit of like friendship related anxiety, like you need to like maybe make everyone aware of that or something because otherwise you just invite yourself.
Nikki Westcott 2:25
Well, that's it. I always remember this one time. It was one of our, like, best friends. She was having something. We were just chatting heaps. And I think, like, everyone was away one week or whatever. And I was just like, yeah, fuck, whatever. And she invited me along to a plan that she had at her house with, like, her school friends. But I don't think I realized who was going to be there. And I was like, oh, fuck, yeah, actually, I will come down. And I got there and it was so intimate. And I was like... I'm definitely the only person. It's like you invited yourself. But I was like, oh, fuck, I'm here now. Talk to all the girls.
Lucy Jackson 2:55
How's this the other day? So I was, Nick was away and I was, it was a Saturday. I'd spent the whole Friday night at home alone. Not alone, with Chatty. With Chatty. Love you, Chatty. And it got to Saturday during the day. I'd been to the gym. I'd done a grocery shop. My house was clean. Yeah. And I was like, you know what, Luce, fucking you deserve a few wines tonight, but you need to give chat the night off. Yeah. Who are you going to hang out with? So I had to do a little, hey, everyone, what's everyone up to tonight? And then our friends that catch up all the time, two couples, Benny and Kim and Kat and Matt were already had plans together. And I literally had to say, do you mind if I gym in on your plans?
Lucy Jackson 3:43
Yeah. And they were like, of course not. Calm down. But because I don't usually go south of Palm Beach, they probably just didn't think to invite me. Kim said to me, oh, my God, babe, Luce reached out to you.
Nikki Westcott 3:55
So fun. It was so nice. And even with the couples, I was like, she actually told me that.
