Welcome to another episode of How We Made Your Mother, where Craig Thomas and I talk about How I Met Your Mother, a show that we made together from 2005 to 2014. Hi, Craig. Hey, there's Josh. Hey, good to see you.

As always. I'm seeing a lot of you this week. I know. We're going to be sick of each other this week.

And today we're not talking about an episode. We are doing something that is a little more personal for me and Craig that we had been talking about doing because for both of us in totally different ways, there was an inflection point between season two and season three. The summer was very impactful for both of us in very different ways. As Craig said, we're doing a kind of hymium-style flashback right now.
Within the podcast. The podcast can speak the same cinematic language of How Much Your Mother, where we're flashing back within the podcast. We kind of meant to do this sooner than right now, but it's how fitting to the hymium narrative that we would suddenly, well into season three, say, and kids, we're going to take you in the Wayback Machine.

We're kind of doing that. We couldn't figure out the right time to get this done. We needed to bang out, go episode by episode in season three. We just realized, oh, wait, the whole season's going by. We wanted to talk about it. It was a huge moment in our lives between season two and season three of How Much Mother. It informed all of season three, our energy, what we were going through in life. What we brought to the show that year, what was changing inside of us. And we thought it just it merited it merited at least a bonus episode. Yeah.
And I think the first two seasons were so wobbly in terms of our certainty that we'd be doing more of it.
Oh, yeah.
By the time we got back for season three, it felt like, oh, this is where we live now.
This is our job.
This is our job. We're going to be here for a while. The network started displaying more faith in us. I think at the end of season three is when we got the two-season pickup. Is that right?
I think so. I think we got a four and five pickup. Yeah.
But I remember kind of celebrating with the crew.
What happened during the Season 2→3 break and why is this episode a personal detour?
It kind of felt like... oh, I'm going to be seeing these people for a long time. There was a sense of stability and solidity to the whole thing. But I think that what's important for people to realize is, I've said this before, How I Met Your Mother looks like five people when you watch the TV show. It looks like five people and a bunch of guest stars. But the truth is, there are 50 to 70 people milling about off-camera, powdering your face and tugging on your sleeve and doing all these things, lighting, camera. There's so much going on, including Kim and craft service. There's a whole ecosystem of a set. And when I watch How I Met Your Mother, yes, I'm watching Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall, and Lily do all these things.
I'm also remembering where I was in my life when I was, quote-unquote, doing these things. Because, you know, the majority of hours in my day were... I mean, sometimes it felt like they were on set, but, like, you have a robust offset life, and I don't think a lot of people... pause to think about that when it comes to actors, and certainly you guys, who worked even more in the shadows.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, we were all living these lives. It was stage 22 on the Fox lot, 50 to 75 people. And then you walked across the parking lot at the back door of that stage to the Hellmuth & Mother production and writers' offices, which were on the second floor of this building right next to stage 22. Right above our dressing rooms. kind of above and above. Yeah, you guys were on the first floor in your dressing rooms.
