Next is an excerpt from archaeologist Barry Cunliffe's ⁠Facing the Ocean: The Atlantic and Its Peoples⁠, where he illustrates all the strategies and passed-down knowledge—of winds, tides, currents, landmarks, marine life, etc.—that sailors in prehistoric Europe would have utilized to travel on the ocean.
