What is the purpose of this episode and who are the hosts?
Okay. Hello, Sunshine. I'm Maryam.
And I'm former presidential candidate Rory Duncan. And we are the hosts of the IELTS Speaking for Success podcast, the podcast that aims to help you improve your speaking skills as well as your listening skills along the way.
We've started this podcast to give you gorgeous grammar and super vocabulary for your high IELTS school.
Band nine score.
Right, Rory. So you are um what president?
Former presidential candidate.
Former presidential candidate.
Former means used to, and candidate means you stood for election, but you didn't well, maybe you did, and get into office.
Dillisten, so every time we start an episode, Rory comes up with a new profession for himself. So he was an opera singer, a dancer. Now he's um presidential candidate.
Former presidential candidate, there are more important things to do. Maria. Maria, are you paying attention?
What? What? Oh yes. I'll just uh fix my makeup in the mirror.
Ah, I see. Let's talk about mirrors, shall we?
Mirrors, what a strange topic.
It is it's another strange one. We've had life stages, now we're back to mirrors.
Yeah.
Why do the hosts discuss looking in the mirror and how does it relate to IELTS speaking?
Rory, do you like looking at yourself in the mirror?
I wouldn't say so. I'm not like a raging narcissist or anything, but I don't mind doing it either. It's um it's useful if I need to check that I'm presentable.
How often do you do that?
I've never really thought about it before. Probably once in the morning when I fix my hair after a shower, and then maybe if I'm in the bathroom I'll walk past one, um and I'll have a look to make sure nothing is out of place. But I don't wear makeup or anything like that, so there's not much need for anything more than just those couple of checks, once or twice.
Do you usually take a mirror with you?
Um, no, I'm not sure where I'd even keep one, um, even if I wanted to, since I don't carry a handbag or a backpack. And even uh like if I put it in my pocket it would probably shatter or something like that.
Have you ever bought mirrors?
I have actually. I bought a full length one for my house about two years ago after a recommendation from a friend and it's hanging in well it's hanging from the wall uh in my bedroom, which is handy if I need to check what my outfits look like. I really like that one actually.
Would you use mirrors to decorate your house?
Oh I'm not even sure how I would go about that to be honest. But I'm more of a straightforward practical person when it comes to decoration. I don't really bother with fancier things like mirrors in my home, by and large.

So, dear listener, you look at yourself in the mirror, okay? So I look at myself in the mirror every day, every ten minutes. I enjoy looking at myself in the mirror. But here Rory says I'm not a raging narcissist. He's a person, someone who has too much admiration for themselves.
How often do people typically check themselves in a mirror and what vocabulary can describe this habit?
So you love yourself too much. But it's like too much, okay? And here kind of like raging, so I'm not a horrible narcissist. Extreme I don't mind looking at myself in the mirror. Okay, so I'm I'm fine. I check if I look presentable. We use mirrors to check if everything is okay with us, if I look presentable. Presentable, like good, I look good, everything is fine. So I make myself presentable with a mirror. And then okay, how often do you look at yourself in the mirror? Mira, like what kind of question is this?
Well, it's not really something you think about. And of course, if you don't, I've never really thought about that before. It'll be a great expression to have. That's good for anything, really, if you haven't thought about it.
Oh I've never counted. Like how often? One to three? I don't know. Like I've never thought about that. So once in the morning or several times in the morning, when I do my hair, when I fix my hair, when I have a shower, after I have a shower. I look at myself in the mirror, yeah.
