G'day, I'm Luke Bateman, and this is In the Good Books. And today we have one of my favourite of all time authors with us. I'm very excited for this chat. He's a man that I've spoken about on this podcast many times before, and we are blessed to have him in the studio with us now. Garth Nix, welcome to In the Good Books.

I've told you I did multiple times. I did know that. Yeah. It's always nice to hear. Never gets old.
I've actually done a uh I've done an episode on it was an early episode. Uh so people if you if you're a new listener, go back to it, but I did an an episode on the Old Kingdom trilogy 'cause it's just so foundational to me and my reading journey. But Today's about you. So I want to go back into your reading journey where, you know, books uh the the place that books had for you as a kid, where your love of stories began, how you fell into loving fantasy, and then how you fell into writing. So begin with begin with books.

we're going a long way back in time. We're going a long way back in time. Jumping the TARDIS. Yeah, can I remember? Yeah. Um Yeah, I mean I I think I was very lucky to grow up in a reading household. Yep. Uh my father was a scientist, my mother is an artist, uh, but they're both big readers. And my father was a big science fiction and fantasy fan. Yeah. And he used to work in the US a lot. So he used to bring back books from the US we wouldn't necessarily have. So that was a really important part of my early reading. Yeah. Just now Dad would come back from Texas with a suitcase full of books. Um which was
M that must have been before they had baggage limits the world weighted.
Or or who knows? I mean he he always had tons of books in his suitcases. I mean he was unofficial business. I mean, who knows? Yeah. Yeah. Working for the government. Um so working for both governments, you know, the Australia and the US as a as an agricultural and climate scientist. Yep. Um so that was I remember that from a very early age, even before I could really read being excited about you know the books that we had in the house. Um And you know, I joke that my exposure to fantasy began very, very early because my mother was reading The Lord of the Rings when she was pregnant with me. Right. Yeah, right. So it's like I kind of absorbed it in utero. Yeah. So m maybe it's all down to that. Same. That's yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's yeah yeah yeah. Maybe that's where it all started.
Yeah yeah.
But I was also very lucky. I grew up in Canberra. Yeah. Um when Canberra was a s small town really. Um and there was a specialist children's library between my house and my school, Turner Primary. Yep. And I used to walk to school and on my way home I'd stop in at the children's little children's library. It was kind of like a a garden shed. It wasn't much bigger than this studio. Yeah. But it was full of books. And the librarians were brilliant. They would recommend things to me. And if I read the first book in a in a series, like I read The Wizard of Earth Sea by Ursula Le Guin
there. It's I do believe it's sitting behind one of my behind
me. One of my favourite books. Uh yeah, a br a brilliant book. Yeah.

And so of course I read that and I was like Is are there are there more? And they're like Yes, there are. At that point there were two two more, or possibly even only one more at that point of the but anyway, and they got it for me. Um Andre Norton, Robert Heinlein, and I worked my way through all of their works and they might have one in the library, but they would get all the others.
