Bits & Bobs: Augusta afterglow, GAA Championship has arrived, Arsenal title teeters
13 Apr 2026
Chapter 1: What insights were shared about the Masters tournament and Rory McIlroy's performance?
This is an Irish independent podcast. Now, welcome, everyone. It's Monday. It's Bits and Bobs. Happy to say Will Slattery is here in studio. Will, hello. Hello, Joe. Good news, Will. We are joined by Sarah Mulkerrins. Oh, back again.
Back again, like a bad smell.
Resh from the athletic rounds yesterday.
Yes.
Extra time as well.
Oh, it was good. It was good. Do you know what? It feels proper now. You know, summer's underway. Championship is back. The intensity was there.
Intensity.
That's the word, isn't it? And yeah, league football is done. We're into championship now.
And I bet as a freelancer you could charge for overtime because it went extra time as well.

Chapter 2: How did the GAA Championship opening weekend unfold?
We should defer to the one person here who's been there. But what about that? Come on.
Oh, listen. I like... He just keeps... He keeps doing it, doesn't he? In the human way that he does. I was leaving work on...
Chapter 3: What were the highlights of the Women's Six Nations match at Twickenham?
When was it? So after round one, Thursday and early. So I was leaving work early on Friday and I was with Five Live and I do stuff with Five Live Golf. And one of the production staff was like, it's Rory's, isn't it? And this was before he teed off on Friday. And I was like, get a grip. Just calm yourself down there. And I was like, I'm not going there. I'm not going there.
Chapter 4: What is the current state of Arsenal's title race and their recent match results?
Didn't really have it. He's pulled a score out, but he didn't have it. His swing isn't there, but he clearly has a confidence that he can get himself out of trouble there. And there's not the panic of when he is in trouble that we've seen in the past and the anxiety because of everything that hung over that. And then Friday night happened.
Chapter 5: What are the implications of the Premier League standings for Arsenal and Manchester City?
God, look at this. Still didn't have it.
Still didn't have it. And everyone was like, it's over. I was like, it's not over. It's not. And I was, in a way, I was really glad that Saturday happened to him because I think that helped him then get over the line on Sunday because it was easier for him to have a bad round on a Saturday than a Sunday. And also it probably just maybe put the brakes on in his brain a little bit and he understood,
It's that debate always with Rory and it happened last year. And I remember Padraig Harrington talking about it on the podcast that you did with him about the mistakes that he made last year was when he was playing defensive golf and it's not comfortable for him.
And so actually what helped him get over the line, I think, last night was the moments early on where he stumbled and he actually had to press the accelerator because he's more comfortable and more fluid within himself when he can play aggressive golf rather than defensive golf.
because it was a stiff breeze and the back nine was tough.

Chapter 6: How did the Champions Cup matches impact the teams involved?
People thought when they saw the pin positions in the morning, it was going to be a birdie fest. It just became a who can hold your nerve job, a bit like the Tiger won in 19. And Rory really did. Like, I felt very sorry for Justin Rose, the way he got hold of the tournament.
Yeah.
And he's at 11. It's yours. And he just fell apart over the next three holes.
Yeah.
Really tough one for him to swallow.
And so many people were supporting him as well because of his near misses and last year in particular and how magnanimous he was in that moment when Rory did it. And so I think if he had got over the line, there would have been an awful lot of love for it. And, you know, I would have been happy to see him do it, you know, because he's a great golfer.
And when you deal with him, he's really nice and kind. You know, he speaks so well about it and to have that length of career where you can commit to it in the way he absolutely commits to it.
Yeah, he would have been the oldest European major winner since old Tom Morris in like 1860.
Really?

Chapter 7: What challenges are Spurs facing in their relegation battle?
the job we do, Joe.
These things happen. It was hard. I was genuinely conscious of the neighbours. The lights were on. They probably thought the shed was being robbed. They were probably also watching the Masters. Maybe, maybe. Dale emailed in on Nick Faldo. What do you guys make of Nick Faldo on commentary? He is annoying but interesting at the same time. Thanks. I'm a big Faldo fan. I have to say personally.
Like he's an eccentric. Yeah. But obviously in a TV landscape where that's a rarity, I think his eccentricity whilst might be like Marmite for people, it does sort of feel like he would be no different to who's sitting beside you on the couch making like the very average jokes and just, oh, the drunk footage, great. You know, he's just not trying to do anything too broadcast-y.
And so I think in that respect, he's great. And he's amazing on the swing.
This is the thing.
Ike knows a swing without a replay.
And on all of Rory's swings, he's able to analyse it right within the moment, say why it's, you know, going off the way it is, what exactly is wrong. And then you hear the press conference later and Rory's saying the same thing from him. So that insight and analysis in that moment is great for him.
And he knows Augusta really well. I mean, straight away, he's like, oh, he's in a good spot and he's in a bad spot. He knows exactly where he should be at all times. So you mix all that in, three-time major winner, three-time Masters winner, six-time majors. I think he's brilliant. And he gets a lot of derision for referring to himself so much in his own accolades. But I think it's relevant.
He won three Masters. He's equipped. It kind of reminds me of Clive Woodward always being like, and when I won the World Cup, and obviously when I won the World Cup, and when I won the World Cup, this is what it's like. It's fun. You want big personalities with huge egos on television just being themselves. I just think that's great.

Chapter 8: What historical significance does Mary Louise Etta's appointment hold in football?
Absolutely. Short of the Sopranos cutting the black, it was as disappointing a finish as I've seen in a major moment. Spoilers. Like it was such a... Yeah, I don't know. It was strange. No, it was strange. It felt off watching it. It's just like, oh, this isn't the right angle. You were discombobulated. Yeah.
they had that strange camera angle of like I'm watching from Cameron Young's point of view as Rory McIlroy on the 9th clutch pad I'm like why am I seeing this kind of that was too artistic it's like you know yeah what's going on they're like I think they're getting arty now to be fair not to be all faldo the drone footage is amazing it's great I mean it is stunning
But then you go, well, maybe they're distracted or their priorities are on other parts of jazzing up in their mind, probably the broadcast and some of the other more maybe basic kind of routines that falls down.
The one on the 9th was in the Stade de France where they get the artist drawing the thing at the side of the pitch and like...
you know you're missing the replay it was definitely OTT I mean it was cool as part of a documentary it was almost like I thought we were watching a replay why aren't we getting the actual camera you know how much Premier League years there's an era where actually it's unwatchable because they're just too arty and you don't know what's you never show the actual goal I just want camera one yeah
Yeah, I think a bit of that happened. One final thing I want to say in the coverage. If you were a Hideki Matsuyama fan, you really got your money's worth yesterday because they showed every single bloody shot he hit. They love a former champion. This is the problem with Augusta. They control everything, including how they sell the rights, which they control.
They didn't show Scotty Scheffler for about an hour. We got no information as to why he was on the 13th hole for so long. That was bad. It was an hour later we found out that Haotong Li was like, you know, doing a tour of the course trying to get it in the hole, finishing with a five over. But we got no information.
Same with Sam Burns as well. There was a montage of Sam Burns on a hole about 25 minutes after he had been on a hole. And I did find that sometimes even within the live coverage, they were jumping around so much to get the golf in because they're under such pressure to include all the golf shots. But sometimes they were cutting away before the ball had even stopped. Yeah.
Scotty Scheffler being on 13 for... half an hour was disconcerting with no information yeah and we were missing like the greatest golf meme in the last 10 years like Lee just standing with his head like popping out of the kind of the shrubbery he did laugh in 18 because I thought Scotty Sheffield might be a bit peeved at him you know like you haven't helped my rhythm here pal
