This is an Irish independent podcast.
Hello everybody, welcome to the Indoor Sport Podcast. Will Slattery here with you. And today we are talking Champions League football. Europe is back on the horizon. Matchday 1 is ongoing. The big teams have come to play. Some big wins for PSG, Barcelona, Liverpool coming from behind last night against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. Man City, Real Madrid getting off to winning starts. But of course... one player in particular has caught the eye from an Irish perspective, and that is Troy Parrott, stepping up on his Champions League debut on Tuesday night away to Lille and scoring the winning goal for Real Batiste. So we will be discussing all of that and more on today's show. In a few minutes' time, Gary Breen will be here with me.
I will discuss with him the runners and riders for Europe this season, as well as our boy Troy. But first, I'm delighted to be joined in studio by... Sean O'Connor, freshly tanned after last Friday night's trip to Sevilla to the Estadio La Catua to watch Troy Parrott score his winning goal against Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid. Sean, how are you?
Thanks, Will. You pronounced that pretty well there. I'm impressed.
I did ask you
off-air
what the proper pronunciation was, and I'm sure you had to brush up on your Spanish for your trip. So the summer of Sean is now becoming the autumn of O'Connor. You were at the World Cup. You went to amazing venues, had the time of your life. And now you get this plum gig last Friday to go over to watch Troy Parrott's home debut against Real Madrid and he goes and scores the winner. Incredible.
Jackpot. Jackpot. It's always the risk, I suppose, when sports desks are looking at these trips and you're sent out hoping things go your way hoping he gets on first and foremost uh i probably wasn't expecting him to start to be honest so that wasn't too much of a surprise when you got the team sheet and then i know we'll come on to obviously but second half he starts warming up and you're starting to get a bit a bit anxious he's warming up for a bit too too long um hour mark 65 66 you're thinking looking at manuel pellegrini saying just throw him on will you please like come on here
When I saw the team sheet, I was like, oh, I really hope John doesn't go
over there for
like an unused silver, like a one minute run out at the end.
So it can go any sort of way. He could not get on at all. And then your trip is kind of, you're probably scrapping around for storylines then for something to write about. He could get on and that's fine. And then sometimes you hit the jackpot like last Friday. It was crazy. Yeah.
Amazing. Last Friday was amazing. Him scoring on his Champions League debut, the winning goal for Real Madrid as well against Lille was amazing. We'll get to that in a minute. First, our football coverage is in association with Sports Extra from Sky, which is Premier Sports and TNT Sports in one subscription. With that subscription, you can watch every Champions League game this season, the 12.30 Premier League kick-offs on TNT and the 3pm game every week on Premier Sport, which this week is Liverpool versus Fulham at Anfield. Feel every moment with Sports Extra. Get it on Sky or stream it with now. Quickly before we kind of really dive deep into Troy, because there is a few of the storylines that I weren't mentioning.
Champions League, as I mentioned, kicking off this week. It's been big gun heavy. Like a lot of the big teams have started very, very strongly. Like last night we had PSG, we're going for three in a row. 6-1 winners over Sloven Bratislava.
