Hi everybody, Will Slattery here and as the World Cup reaches a crescendo as we prepare for the All-Ireland Hurling Final, there is also the not-so-small matter of the final golf major of the year, the Open Championship. Conor McKeown is over in Birkdale and I will be chatting to him shortly, but first... The latest Joe in NYC pod is in your feed. But for now, we are leaving New York and we are chatting golf. The final round of the Open will play out alongside Galway versus Limerick this Sunday and finish just before the World Cup final. And as always, there are plenty of storylines catching people's attention. Rory tends to dominate the early part of most major weeks and after a decent showing at the Scottish Open last weekend, expectations are high that he will be in contention. Scotty Scheffler turns up to Birkdale after missing the cut in Scotland, his first missed cut since all the way back in August 2022. Bryson DeChambeau is hoping to avoid his own personal Grand Slam this week. He missed the cut at the Masters, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship and he missed the cut at the US Open so people will be eagerly watching his performance in Birkdale.
And there's also hometown favourite Tommy Fleetwood who will be playing at a course a few minutes away from where he was born and he will be hoping to win his first major title. But before I speak to Conor about all those characters and all the storylines, I wanted to give a quick history of one of golf's most iconic venues as it prepares to host its 11th Open Championship. The tournament first came to Birkdale in 1954, with Australian Peter Thampson winning the first of his five Open titles. He also won his fifth and final one there in 1965. Sandwiched between those two wins was Arnold Palmer's first claret jug in 1961, an important moment for Goff that really kick-started the annual visits from the top American players to compete at the Open Championship.
Lee Trevino won his first Open at Birkdale in 1971, Johnny Miller was the victor in 1976, and in 1983 Tom Watson won his fifth and final Open Championship at the Southport course. There was Australian Ian Baker-Finch in 1991, Mark O'Mara completed a Masters Open double in 1998, before Padraig Hankton rocked up to Birkdale in 2008 looking to defend the claret jug he had won in a dramatic Carnoustie play-off against Sergio Garcia the year before. He started the final round two shots behind leader Greg Norman, actually an underrated entry in his list of major heartbreaks. But Harrington reached the 17th fairway with a two-shot lead as he prepared to play his approach shot into the power five. While some were preaching patience, Harrington unleashed the shot of his life.
