Britt Selwood, welcome to Life Lessons. Obviously, you've got such a beautiful supportive partner in Joel.
Can
you take me back to his premiership win in 2022? That was his final game. How did you feel? I was crying
from halftime to the end of the game. We actually didn't get to celebrate. I went to hospital that night. Talk to me about feeling mum guilt. I had a really difficult pregnancy with Alfie. I don't know if I had postnatal depression and I think Alfie fed off that. I have a lot of guilt in that, that I couldn't show up for him during that time. Being a mum, it is the biggest joy and the biggest privilege
And before we get into my conversation with Brit, if you or someone you love is struggling with their mental health or suicidal ideation, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. We'll pop the link in our show notes too.
Britt Selwood, welcome to Life Lessons. Thanks for having me. Thank you so much for joining me. Your first Life Lesson is don't let the past define you as a person.
How did Brit react to Joel Selwood’s 2022 premiership win and his final game?
And you told our producers that you believe we're always changing and that life circumstances and past events don't define who you are today. Why is this so important to you? I think this is
so important because there's so many things that have happened in life. In my life, I look back at... some trauma, I look at loss, I look at heartbreak, I look at the person I was 10 years ago, I think I'm always changing. And I think it's important to not get stuck into that. There are experiences, but you move forward and you are a different person and you've got to learn from those experiences. And to not get bogged
down in those times. That sometimes can define us and we feel like they can when we're moving through grief or whatever it may be. I completely agree. Take me back to Brit 10 years ago. Who was she back then? How would you describe her?
That's a good question. Brit 10 years ago was very carefree. I mean, I had no kids. I was... Ah, 10 years ago was I studying. I think I'd just finished my degree.
What does Brit describe as “mum guilt” and how did it affect her after a difficult pregnancy?
So I was just getting into teaching and I was finding out what I wanted to do. I knew I loved teaching. Well, I knew I loved being with kids, but I was testing the waters in mainstream and I wasn't loving it. And I ended up jumping into special needs and I found my true passion there. So that was 10 years ago. I think I'd just... Met Joel, maybe? Yeah. When did you meet him? Can you take me back to that moment? How did you two cross paths? We crossed paths through a mutual friend, Taylor Hunt. He gets a mention
all
the
time. I love
it. Mutual friend. And we met at a coffee shop at St. Ali in South Melbourne. And that would have just been, yeah, over 10 years ago now. How old were you then in your early 20s? 23. Yeah. Yeah. So I was quite young and I think back to myself then like, whoa, I had no idea where my life was going and I'd met this amazing guy and life's just taken off since then.
How would you define the early stages of your relationship? Was there a moment when you knew Joel like was your person? Yeah, there was. I think
I always knew he was my person. We had a really easy relationship. We had so much fun. We loved traveling together. And we just, I think myself and Joel as well, we're not big thinkers. We just kind of go along with things. We get on, we have fun and we just experience
everything we can. Do you have a standout moment, like when you've been away travelling together or even back then when you were younger as well that you like
to
reminisce on?
I mean, we were ambassadors for the Grand Prix in 2016 and I think back to that time and we just got to experience some really amazing things and I love the Grand Prix and it was a really fun time in our relationship and yeah, we just...
