What is the new Withings smart scale and why is it relevant for GLP‑1 users?

Margie Shafer 0:00
Time now for our daily tech and business report. More than 12% of adults in the United States are using GLP1 medications. French health monitor company Withings is unveiling a new smart scale meant to help those on their weight loss journey. And today we are joined by Bloomberg's Adana Wallman for more. Thank you so much for being with us this afternoon. Thanks for having me. So tell us more about the scale. What can it do?
Dana Wollman 0:29
So um I think it's important to start with what the scale can do that other scales can do.

How does the scale’s six‑zone body‑composition scanning differ from other smart scales?

Dana Wollman 0:33
Um namely it can um scan for your um makeup of muscle and body fat, which a lot of scales can do. This one um does two things. It um it scans in what it says are six different zones, so it can be a little more precise, actually a lot more precise than other scales about where on your body you are gaining or losing muscle or fat. And the other thing is the marketing here. here. Um I I wouldn't say and the company isn't saying that this device is exc exclusively for people on GLP ones, but they very explicitly explicitly are marketing the device toward that group of people.

Why is Withings specifically marketing this device to people on weight‑loss drugs?

Dana Wollman 1:04
And that was really interesting to us. And we wonder if we're gonna be seeing more of that in the months ahead, um, will there be more health um gadgets and wellness gadgets um that really um lean into this big trend, as you said, the number of people in this country on these this class of weight loss drugs and really specifically marketing their products um toward those people on the specific journey that they're on.
Margie Shafer 1:27
Um why does that matter for GLP one users and and how does the scale distinguish between body fat and muscle mass? And I w I was surprised to hear that other scales are doing that. I hadn't heard that before.
Dana Wollman 1:38
Um, they they do and I would say as the user of one of those scales I would take the results with somewhat of a grain of salt. I think directionally they are often correct, but they can really um i the I wouldn't definitely not take the accuracy of those readings as gospel. And as we all know, our body makeup can fluctuate from day to day. So that's another reason to take these things with a grain of salt. But I think in this case the message that Wippings is really hammering home toward this group of people is um that when someone is on a weight loss journey, um, they don't just lose fat.

How accurate are the muscle‑mass and body‑fat readings and should users trust them?

Dana Wollman 2:07
They could potentially lose muscle. as well, depending on their fitness habits, depending on their dietary in intake, um, their dietary choices, how many calories they're taking in. And um I'm really just um making the point that people might want a scale where um they can keep an eye on whether they're losing fat, which is the goal, and not a disproportionate amount of muscle. Now what I would say is this risk of losing too much muscle is a risk of any diet plan, not just for someone who's on GLP ones. Um it could really happen to anyone and I would also flag um the population of um women who are in perimenopause. I think for that demographic of women, um, you know, we're often told that we need to eat more protein, um, and that we're really at risk of losing muscle mass.
Dana Wollman 2:50
So it's definitely not specifically this group of people who are at risk of that happening, but um that is the marketing that we're seeing.
Margie Shafer 2:58
You mentioned that there are zones of the body where you shouldn't be losing muscle. Uh what are the specific zones that would be if someone's on a drug like that that they need to be aware of?
Dana Wollman 3:07
Oh, so I I um it's it's specific zones that the scale can monitor on your body. Distinguishing for instance between your extremities and your um torso.

What body zones does the scale monitor and how does its AI chatbot help interpret results?

Dana Wollman 3:16
But it this would be an important place to note that um the company doesn't market itself as um a diagnostic device. Um so it's not making any um diagnoses about the user has a condition or um the results are good or bad per se. Um but it is presenting the um the results and insights that really are always meant for users to take to a doctor themselves. I think certain other medical gadgets um or I should say wellness gadgets um we've seen marketed to our consumers um definitely toe
