sure thing. Happy to.
So Matt, what what kind of emissions load are we talking about here and where is it coming from?
So this this isn't an enormous load if you're if you don't have a giant oil extractor or something like that. But we're a tech company, it's pretty big. It's about twenty million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Uh it's up twenty five percent from a year earlier.
What metrics and reporting standards are used to track Microsoft’s emissions?
Um and a lot of this is the result of the AI data center building them.
And tell us more about that that building that's uh occurring and also uh the metrics that are being used. Is this sustainability report, um, just something that the company is doing voluntarily or is this government mandated?
So there was there's a big push uh in the US about a decade ago to push um big technology companies to proactively disclose some of this. You know, there are some disclosures that are required by governments, but most of this is voluntary. Um so what Microsoft and it the rest of its big fears in the industry have seen uh in the last few years, particularly as they chase all this AI investment. Um is that that leads to bigger buildings they gotta build, it leads to more chips they gotta put into them, leads to concrete, steel, all the things that put together a big old uh data center style warehouse somewhere in the suburbs and that means more carbon emissions, means more electricity use, all the all the things these companies um committed to reducing and at some point eliminating, um the numbers are going the wrong direction.
So, um what is Microsoft gonna do about it? I understand that they pledged earlier um to make more environmentally conscious moves, but then AI might have changed that. I'm not sure.
How is Microsoft planning to address the surge in emissions from new data centers?
Yeah, it truly looks like it's making their goals more difficult. You know, Microsoft has said they hope to, by twenty thirty, be taking more carbon out of the atmosphere than they put in. That task has gotten harder in the last few years. So, you know, they're they're talking about efficiency the way they have uh for years and years. They're talking about underwriting green energy projects, uh solar farms, wind power, that sort of thing, talking about new technology to capture and sequester carbon. Um so there's a lot kinda on the menu, but it's it's unclear uh in what kind of shape they're gonna be to hit their goals.
And then what about going forward? I mean, this is only the beginning of of this boom. So based on what's planned, um, how much more emissions could we see?
It's a real open question.
What challenges does Microsoft face in meeting its 2030 carbon‑negative goal?
I mean, I don't think anybody's called the end of this. Uh we're about to go into tech earnings season. You know, they might well announce a further increase in the amount of data centers they're building and and the sort of already unprecedented spending toward that. Um so I think it's it's it's really hard to tell. But for folks who make sustainability their uh their life, it it certainly looks like some of the biggest champions in the form of tech companies are uh are a little bit in trouble.
Okay. Now what about AI as a tool for climate progress eventually?
something that uh uh companies have touted, you know, AI can more efficiently, you know, route electricity use, can more efficiently optimize um optimize software programs. There's a lot of potential gains from AI. Um that could that could come for the environment.
How might future AI‑driven growth affect tech‑sector emissions?
Um, I think for for a lot of people who are who are tracking carbon though, you know, that's just that's frills at this point until they prove it out. The numbers still gotta go the right direction. And right now for for most big tech they are not.
Is this emissions um tied uh specifically just to the construction that we had mentioned before? There's been a lot of pushback of from neighbors where these construction projects are happening that it it could influence their neighborhoods.
