Time for our daily tech and business report. NVIDIA is betting on robotic tech, working to make humanoid robots safer around people. For a closer look, we go to Bloomberg's Ian King. He joins us on the K C B S Ring Central Newsline. Ian, thanks for the time.

Good, good, good. You know, when you talk about uh humanoid robots, I think Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminor Terminator or Bishop in Aliens.

How do experts define a humanoid robot and how does it differ from current automation?

Are are we talking about the kind of uh r robots that look like people? They have heads and bodies and arms.

Uh broadly speaking, yes we are. I don't think they're going to be uh facsimiles of humans any time soon. Uh but basically w what we're talking about is a g a a step up from sort of automated Yeah, forklift trucks and and that kind of thing into something that really does resemble a human in broader In the broader sense with a head, with a body, and we'll be capable of basically working in an environment alongside human beings.

So what is trying to what is the point of trying to make them safer? What do they have to do?

Why is improving safety for robots that work alongside humans a priority?

Well right now, um these devices exist and they're getting increasing amounts of uh capabilities, the ability to lift and manipulate things primarily. The problem that they have is that the safety systems that were developed were developed for kind of other types of robots and and those safety systems basically say, Hey, if you see a human Stop where you are. Hey, if you see the chance of something happening, slow down. Um and those constraints, you know, the basically don't touch a human, don't go near a human, mean that there are severe limitations on what we can use these things for and and basically take away the argument that they would add to productivity in any type of environment.

Give me an idea of what we are thinking about or already are using these things for. Like you said, forklifts and lifting things, but would we see them, say, in an operating room?

Yeah, I mean th we we're talking about a incremental um implementations over time. So initially we were thinking about areas like um a warehouse or a s a sorting room in a warehouse where

What early applications are Nvidia envisioning for these safer humanoid robots?

You know, you've got heavy things, things that are difficult for humans to lift or boring repetitive tasks, sort of recognising this goes on conveyor belt A, this goes on conveyor belt C that, you know, human beings just don't enjoy doing and perhaps aren't that good at. And there you bring in this humanoid robot that can help maybe help the humans lift or help the humans concentrate. But we need that interactivity. And then over time we learn from that experience. We make these you know, devices 'cause that's what they are, safe around humans and and good at interacting with humans and then they sort of branch out from there into more sort of complex environments.

How lucrative might this sector be?

Well, that's up in the air. I mean w as you know we ha Holly, we have a a a massive amount of spending on AI data centres right now.

How big could the market for human‑compatible robots become?

creating a lot of compute capacity. For that massive investment to pay off, we have to see AI out and about in the world and in use to to to actually have a massive economic impact. Robots are being seen as one of the potential uses for AI, that they'll have to be making their split second decisions on their own and interacting in order to safely interact with humans. So maybe that's a big divide you know, a b a big market in the future. Jensen Wang, the CEO of NVIDIA, has talked about billions of these things in the world. Um at the moment there aren't that many of them in the world at all. Um so obviously we have a long way to go.

Clearly there are companies that would be interested in having this kind of technology because, like you said, they have people who are doing these jobs and, you know, some of them don't do them well or they don't care to be doing them repetitively and they get bored.

Yeah, I mean the the obvious example would be somebody like uh Amazon with their warehouses.

Which industries, like Amazon’s warehouses, could benefit most from humanoid robots?

You know, we have to put human beings in an environment that they don't particularly enjoy where it's you know, in order to get the maximum pro productivity they have to be finding and and and packing things uh at a certain cadence.
