Unknown 0:00
It's time for our daily tech and business report. Traditionally known as a sport that doesn't really require a lot of expensive equipment, running is quickly becoming a social status symbol thanks to luxury sports apparel. For more, return to the KCBS Ring Central Newsline and speak with Bloomberg's Lily Meyer. Lily, thanks so much for the time. Yeah, thanks so much for having me. We just had the San Francisco Marathon on Sunday and I wonder how much the winner paid for their outfit. Talk about the kinds of luxury items that are out there.
Lily Meyer 0:34
Yeah, so the story gets into some of the running clothes that are more expensive than, you know, your traditional old shirt in the back of your closet and pair of shorts. So Things like an a hundred eighty dollar pair of shorts. Um even a three hundred fifty pair dollar pair of shorts. Uh one hundred and forty dollar t shirt with little holes throughout it, three hundred dollar glasses. So, you know, brands that offer running gear that looks familiar to us but that is much more expensive.
Unknown 1:06
W how popular is this? Because, you know, I if I paid that much, I'm not sure I'd want to sweat in it.
Lily Meyer 1:12
Yeah, I mean a lot of these brands are still smaller but are growing quickly. The luxury running market at for apparel is outpacing the regular um running apparel market. So we're definitely seeing an uptick in this, especially as people go to running clubs and go on fitness based dating apps. People wanna You know, they don't just want technical clothes for all they run, but they also want clothes that they feel and look good in.
Unknown 1:38
Are these actually purchased by athletes, people who are runners, whether they are avid runners or just casual ones?
Lily Meyer 1:46
Yeah, yeah, a lot of the people we spoke to in the story are are very avid runners, running marathons and r and running very regularly. But they also mentioned that, you know, they can wear these shirts to brunch or around the neighborhood as well.
Unknown 2:00
I don't know about the moth tech one that looks like it's been eaten by moths. Do I wanted to wear that to to brunch? I guess it depends on your style. I guess okay. So you know, you used to think that all you needed for running was, you know, t an old beat up T shirt, a pair of running shorts or any shorts at all, and and some running shoes. It used to be that running shoes were the most expensive thing.
Lily Meyer 2:23
Yeah.

What types of high‑priced running gear are consumers buying?

Lily Meyer 2:24
Yeah. And I mean these runners are also still spending a lot on shoes, especially because they run so regularly, you know, they're cycling through shoes quite often. But now, you know, they're the rest of the year to go with the running outfit is is costing more too.
Unknown 2:38
Is running becoming more popular and then therefore we're seeing more demand for this kind of apparel? Y
Lily Meyer 2:45
Yeah. So um in twenty twenty five, fifty two point three million Americans um ran or jogged and that's up from the last several years. So We're seeing more entrants in races and we're seeing more people out and running.
Unknown 3:02
Yeah, I was wondering if you looked at like the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon, what the entries are. Those are always really popular. Everybody wants to get uh an entry into there. But I I wonder when they have those expos, you know, that are associated with uh races, whether people who aren't necessarily running are going in there and buying stuff.
Lily Meyer 3:20
That's a great question. Yeah, that would be a good thing to look into. Yeah, in the story we mentioned that um entrance for the Boston marathon this past year were at their highest since twenty fourteen, so really recovering post COVID.
Lily Meyer 3:48
Yeah, exactly. And running clubs have really boomed. So it's not just you know, they're not just clubs that elite runners can participate in, but they're runners of all abilities can can find. And, you know, they have ones that are based around different interests and passions. So I think we're also seeing more of that as well.
Unknown 4:05
