It's time for our daily tech and business report. Today we're joined by Bloomberg's Natalie Lung. Uber continuing its aspirations to become an everything platform as it partners with Expedia to move into the hotel booking sector. Natalie joins us now on the KCBS Ring Central Natal Newsline. So Natalie, how is this gonna work with Uber and Expedia?
Natalie Lung 1:22
So you'll be able to book uh hotels um within the Uber app. Um and Uber is saying um because you they already have your payment methods and sort of your uh phone number and other contact details, this will sort of make it a very seamless experience. And they're doing this because they think they already p big part of people's travel plans. Um about fifteen percent of red bookings happen to or from the airport. So they wanna extend uh their app to more parts of people's travels.
Holly Quan 1:52
I guess that makes sense, right? You're getting an Uber from the airport taking you to the hotel, so why not get in on the hotel bookings as well? But but is there um going to be I don't know, a discount? I mean there's there is there a reason why people would go to um you know, Uber rather than kayak or hotels dot com.
Natalie Lung 2:12
Yeah, so uh this really is an effort to boost uh Uber's paid membership program, Uber One. Um and because Uber One w members will be able to get discounts uh if they book hotels on the Uber app. Um and and this is really Uber's effort to um gain user loyalty, you know, get more people into the membership, um, and sort of get them hooked on keep uh um getting uh keep booking on Uber.
Holly Quan 2:40
Yeah, I can see that being a loyalty uh thing. I is this already in play and and how's it going?
Natalie Lung 2:47
Yes, uh so they announced this last week um and um they are going to add uh vocation rentals from uh Expedia's verbal brand as well in the future. Um and as part of the partnership, uh sort of on the on the flip side, within the Expedia app, um they will also allow people to book Uber Ride. So this is sort of like a two way uh partnership to uh encourage people, uh existing users to explore the
Holly Quan 3:13
This is really becoming an an everything kind of platform. I mean imagine, you know, that they're going since they already do food delivery, they would probably say, Hey, you know, here's a good restaurant that's kind of near your hotel.
Natalie Lung 3:25
Exactly. And last week they also introduced a new travel mode, uh, where people when they arrive at their hotels they can explore nearby restaurants and if they don't want to opt for the hotel room service, they can order Uber Eats like a actually a lot of people do. They can order Uber Eats delivery to their hotels and to make it even easier, um the company is defaulting uh to, you know, a add cutlery, um because you know you know, your he hotel room might not have um disposable calorie.
Holly Quan 3:54
Oh, that's a good idea. Okay. So you said that they announced this last week. Um, is it up and running and and have people been what what's the response been? Are people loving it?
Natalie Lung 4:04
It it's still pretty early. They announced it last week at their annual product event. Um but it's really about uh boosting uh the membership program and we'll Uber will be reporting their results tomorrow, so we'll likely hear more from their management tomorrow.
