How many world titles has Carola Garra won and what categories are they in?
Corolla, first off, congratulations on another title win. How many world titles is this for you at this point?
This is the four of classic and I have one more equipment.
So five overall. Coming into this competition, were you 100%? Because I noticed I'd seen a 220 kilo double on squats, but you were showing a lot of your lifts. Were you 100% coming into this?
The preparation was very good, so I was confident in the squat, but the condition yesterday was not perfect. So I was expecting a little bit more, but that's okay.
Were you... not showing your lifts in prep strategy so the competition didn't know where your top end was? Or is it like a tool some people like Alba Bostrom were talking about, they won't show it just to not have like pressure of expectation and numbers?
Yes, maybe it's for this, but also because I don't know, I don't like to share so much for... It's her own thing.
She's like that. She's a bit shy. She doesn't like to share too much, just some way of being.
And this year, first off, Megan Scanlon was coming to the 69-kilo class. Janae Kovacs, young American coming from U.S. and a lot of potential on her. Chandler Babb, two-time world champion in 69. She was going to be there. There was a lot. A European champ, Vandal, was going to be there. So there was a lot of good lifters this year.
Yeah.
What would, did you think that this was, this is going to be a close battle coming into this? What was your expectations of the competition?
Yes.
Did Carola feel 100 % prepared for the competition and how did the conditions affect her lifts?
Um, I think that the, this year, the level was very high, uh, because, um, a lot of people, uh, a lot of strong, uh, girls, um, the harder here, maybe I have a one competitor like Leah. or last year Agatha was strong, very strong. This year there were a lot of people, so I was very nervous because every competition is difficult and these girls are very strong. So yes, I think the level is growing up.
And, you know, I was saying this before when I did the IPF interview, Some people who are new to Worlds, if they do national level and you come to IPF World Championships, you feel the nervousness. Like, oh my gosh. You look around the room and, you know, obviously, like, for instance, Janae Kovacs was talking about, when you come from the U.S., you have to battle to get there. It's one thing battling within the U.S., but when you show up at the IPF World Championships and you're a world champion several times, Megan Scanlon's a world champion several times, Chandler Babb, world champion several times, it's a whole other ballgame when you're at the IPF World Championships. And not only is there multiple people who have won, they've won multiple times themselves.
It's like walking through the Hall of Fame of powerlifting. So it's a different level of potential nervousness. And I think some people might be surprised to hear like when you're in the room, they're looking at you like you're the strongest, probably the strongest woman in the room. I think a lot of people were picking you to win. But you were nervous yourself. Yeah. It doesn't go away after all these years. Do you just get used to it? Are you as nervous as your first world championship? I remember in 2019 when you first won, are you as nervous then? You're just used to it, or is it less nervous?
I think I'm maybe a little more nervous now than in the first world championship.
More nervous?
Yes. Maybe because now I am more... She knows what's the business here.
So expectations now, things to do, and also, I would say, the idea that you have to get better. people expect.
Previously, the naivety and not knowing was a blessing.
What did Carola think about the strength of the 69 kg field and her expectations for the showdown?
yeah also uh 2019 there wasn't nearly as much media and attention either i remember um going into 2019 worlds and people were very high on sam calhoun uh from us the year before she was very close to winning um the last deadlift instead of pulling for the win slightly less to pull for a world record deadlift um And people thought 2019, okay, this will be the year she corrects that. I still remember Matt Gary say, like, because Matt Gary was the head coach of Team USA, him messaging me saying, oh, my God, I just found somebody in Italy that's a complete monster.
