This is professional basketball. You play to win the game, as the great Herm Edwards once said. But if Sacramento isn't expected to compete for the playoffs and nobody thinks they are this season, then judging this team exclusively by the standings doesn't tell the entire story. For me, there should be several different measurements for success for this season. Number one, development.
Are your young players getting better? Are they learning from mistakes? Are they becoming more consistent? Are they earning bigger roles? Those things matter. Number two, your identity. What does this Kings team actually want to be? Do they defend? Because they have to get better at that end of the floor. Do they play fast? I think they will. Do they share the basketball? Do they play with toughness? Do they have an identity that we can all look and say, okay, that's what Sacramento Kings basketball is building towards. Number three, defense. Finding that core on this team. The Kings need to figure out which players are actually part of this long-term future. You don't need to have everything figured out in one season, but you do need to start getting answers. Who can be a starter? Who can be a rotation player?
