On the Look Back At It podcast. 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Chapter 2: How did the UK football spring game perform despite the weather?
Walking through there and you hear doofing schmertz in the background screaming.
Speaking of quiet. What if the nose whistle attracts a bear or something?
It could be dangerous. Well, that's okay.
I mean, they can hear it.
Uh, where, where my new house is gets very quiet. I bet. I was out there at night the other night. Oh my goodness. Like that's you, you, that's really quiet out there.
Yeah.
Quiet, kind of discerningly quiet. So I'm going to have to get used to that. No traffic whatsoever. No traffic. Just Shannon, just quiet.
It's peace. I mean, I don't think you would like that, right? That's what you saw on earth.
Did not have peace in my neighborhood on Friday night.

Chapter 3: What impact did Kenny Minchie have during the spring game?
I was watching everyone in the ESPN background. People were on the floor crying. I'm just going to leave it halfway through our podcast. What a tease. That's a great tease. I'm going to turn it in now. You need to hear it. Okay. And then we'll just leave it at that. But I have not laughed that hard.
lehigh and coppin state baseball well it's what derived from that lehigh beat coppin state 38 to 6 in baseball and we were talking about okay so all right spring game what happened I assigned Ryan Shannon as UK football spring game reporter. Good crowd, despite the weather, and they only got in like two and a half quarters and it started raining, so they didn't get a whole game in.
But everybody left talking about Kenny Minchie. And keep in mind, he didn't have his two best running backs. They're out, hurt. Didn't have his two best ā well, two of his best receivers. They're out, hurt. Didn't have his left tackle and still looks sharp where he made a couple good passes. But everybody wanted to talk about his legs. Like they didn't realize he was that mobile.
He ran for a touchdown one time. But he even said after the game, I am not a dual threat quarterback. But he showed he can run a little bit in the spring game. Yes. A lot of people told me they thought the efficiency and just the ā they actually ended up having to do a lot of dump-offs and stuff, maybe not as explosive as it will be normally. Right.
But that it just looked like a fun, more up-tempo sort of ā The environment just seemed a lot more of an exciting football than what we'd seen. Do you agree? Yeah. And he hit tight end Willie Rodriguez going down the middle. I mean, how many years have our fans wanted that, to hit a tight end going down the middle? Perfect throw to him.
He made a nice throw to Brock Kaufman, the sophomore from Sarah, made a diving catch. But there just wasn't a lot of options because your stars are not there. The Carter kid from Paducah that they moved over from safety to running back looked good. Yeah, they had a lot of their top guys were not playing. Right. Because they didn't want to get hurt, etc. Pretty good crowd. Good crowd.
Yeah, when you consider that rain was coming, etc. They did a trick play at the end where they did a halfback pass and went for a touchdown. Stein is hinted that's going to be part of his playbook. He won't be afraid to mix in a trick play or something like that. They got another four-star commitment.
They did.
Right now, Shannon, UK football is ranked as the seventh best recruiting class in America.

Chapter 4: What are the current recruiting rankings for UK football?
When was the last time we had anything?
Granted, this will go down. A lot of schools haven't gotten their players yet. But Shannon's seventh best. Yeah. And he's got a tough schedule coming up next year, too. Well, now's the time to pounce. Exactly. He said that. Now's the time to pounce. I want you to pull up, Shannon, the quote he gave yesterday. Because I want to play this. It's on my Twitter. It was his quote Saturday.
And I just want to give Will a lot of credit. Now, he hasn't played a game, so things are much easier when you haven't played a game. But there's such a joy about Will. Like, I requested to have him on this week. I said I wanted to talk like X and O's with him. I want to, like, get to know the players. Because I don't feel like I know the players.
Do you?
No. A lot of new faces. I mean, I really don't know the players at all. I don't know who's on the team, really. I don't know who's good. And I want to have him kind of help teach me. But there's something so refreshing about just listening to him talk. And also...
In a time when Big Blue Nation continues to get pounded with negativity, some of it self-inflicted, but some of it from the outside, we have a football coach that says something like this, Shannon.
I think when people come here, they see authenticity from the coaching staff. They see real connection from the team. They love Lexington. They love the University of Kentucky. They love what we do on offense, defense, and special teams. Just a bunch of real dudes, man, that coach football here that ā You know, guys don't have to feel on edge talking to you.
Like I don't wear like a quarter zip and like khaki pants at work. Like I would dress like a football coach, you know. So I think when they come in our building, they're like, man, these are just normal dudes that love ball. They love their families. They love the Lord. Like that's what they are.
And so I think that's what's really gravitating these players to here is like-minded people surround themselves with other like-minded people. And so they come to Kentucky and they're like, man, I never knew it was like this. Yeah, well, like we're going to recruit the best players in America. Like that's our job is to sign the absolute best players that we can.

Chapter 5: How does the fan base react to the new football coach's approach?
So it's been great so far. Winning spring is one thing. It's about winning games on Saturdays come fall.
That's awesome. You got to love that, right?
That was fantastic.
And then later he said that our fans have been awesome. They're psychotic in the best way possible. Yeah. Which I love that. That's the truth.
That is true. We are psychotic, but in the best way possible. Yeah. That's part of the reason why we have the best fan base there is.
And I love that he says that. I feel like everyone at UK has been putting their own fans on the defensive.
right yes and now here's a guy going we're psychotic in the best way possible now he takes a huge shot at quarters poor billy's gonna wear i've got one on right now what's wrong with he says we're not gonna walk around here in quarter zips and khakis don't have khakis though that's right dabbo uh-huh right eat it I think Billy felt personally offended by the quarter zips.
I do, too. He seemed a little sad this morning.
That's the only thing Billy wears are quarter zips. Is Billy, you think, Shannon, out on Will Stein now because of this? Maybe so. I kind of felt like he was attacking Billy. But that quote is why he is the perfect guy for this job. He not only has a great football mind, he gets what it means to coach football at Kentucky. And he can relate to being one of us. You know what I mean?

Chapter 6: What are the expectations for the upcoming Alabama game?
Ryan Lemon counter. Okay. Can he keep it under triple digits for the calendar year? No.
That's a lot.
What's interesting is you've said it three times in this segment.
Yes.
Can he keep it under 100 in a year?
Well, there's three. He's one of us. 97 to go.
Because he can use it about Pope, too. Of course I can. And if they hire an AD with UK Connections?
I can use it then.
I just might want to have a varied phrase. But I kind of like, Shannon, the idea of interacting with the fans.

Chapter 7: What are the key highlights from the recent baseball series?
They've got to introduce this team. Yeah. The two most known players are probably Willie Rodriguez and Ty Bryan. And I would say both guys could walk the streets of Lexington pretty anonymously. Yeah. So it is now U.K. football's job, media, introduce these players to this fan base. Yeah. Because just remember what happened with Shiaj Pete. Even though he didn't even end up being great.
How much did people love that kid for a while?
He came on our show. He's the only thing we had to talk about. Yeah, the only thing we had to talk about after media day was him.
So now they need to introduce this team. Start with your Ty Brines and your Willie Rodriguez. Then go to your Kenny Menchies. Yep. Then take your star. We just need to know them because that's the way you get people to love the guys. Because, you know, week two, Shannon, we're playing Alabama in this stadium. I don't know if people process that.
Do you all realize in week two, week two, the Tide are coming here. They're coming. Is that going to be the biggest week two game in the history of Kentucky football? I would argue yes. Usually week two is a lower opponent. It's been Florida before, but I think when it was Florida, it was usually there when we played them in week two.
I'm going to say this is the biggest early season Commonwealth Stadium home game. Maybe one of those years when we opened the season with Louisville. Maybe. But then usually week two is an undermanned opponent. This is Bama. Week two, here. We could put the nail in DeBoer's Alabama coffin in week two. That's true. If we beat him, Shannon, he's done.
He might get fired before he gets back to Tuscaloosa.
I don't ever remember playing like a Georgia or any big team in the second week of the season.
We played Ole Miss.

Chapter 8: What humorous incidents occurred during the Virginia Tech spring game?
It'll be awesome. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. That'll be great. We'll take a break. 859-280-2287. It's KSR.
