Chapter 2: What are the implications of the new $1 million job at UK?
Didn't have to get it approved. Because they changed the rules in 2024, you would have used to have had to take the law school dean, take it to the Board of Trustees. Take the Mitch contract, take it to the Board of Trustees. Now you don't have to. Now the president gets to do whatever they want. And Beshear's like, how do I make the point that that's bad?
oh, people are against this Mitch contract. I'll throw that in. What do you think? Do you agree with the governor that there should be some oversight of the president giving jobs or giving contracts? Or do you think the other argument that we need it to be efficient, it's just better for the president to do it? Which one do you go for?
I go along with what we've been saying for a couple weeks. There's a leaderless university going on over there. There's no leader. There's nobody acting as a leader.
Nobody acting as a leader in the athletic department. But I think Bashir's making the opposite point. I think Bashir's making the point there's one person deciding everything.
Yeah, he's basically the king.

You need some form of checks and balances in this.
That's exactly right. I don't think that's what ā I think Bashir's saying the opposite of that. He's saying one person's making every decision, and that's not right. You know, and it struck me because that wasn't Matt Jones saying it. That wasn't Brett Setzer saying it. That was the governor of the state of Kentucky pointing out our flagship university has some issues.
And I will also note, it's easy for this stuff to come through partisan. And I get it. As soon as the governor gets involved, people are going to think it's partisan. And then when he said he brought up the word partisan. Yeah. But I will note that the criticisms of this structure you have on the one hand, Andy Beshear, Democrat, probably running for president. Yes.

You know, comments coming in. Let me read one that I do think is worth noting. One person writes, Matt, why are we talking about this? It's just politics. This is a sports show because this is going to have a huge. The only reason all of that story is interesting to me is because it's going to have a huge determining factor on who wins the governor's or excuse me, on who is the A.D.
Like this is now this is now a who's going to be the A.D. ? And more specifically, like Eli Capilouto, here's another breaking news. He ain't going to be the president. He's going to be retiring, too. He's been a lame duck president for a couple of years. I'm surprised he hasn't announced it. I mean, they're going to go in the spring. We're going to have a new president and a new AD. Yes. Right.
That's what's going to be happening starting in June or July. We're going to have a new president and a new AD. A new president and a new AD that, from a sports perspective, will be figuring out whether or not the University of Kentucky is going to be competitive in the new NIL landscape. You may not care about who the dean of the law school is. Most people don't.
I mean, I don't even really care. But I assume by listening to this, you care about UK sports. The two people that will have the biggest impact on deciding if in the next decade, Kentucky is going to be relevant nationally, are going to be hired in the next month and a half. Yeah. And this tweet by Beshear... is about how is this person going to be hired?

Chapter 4: What concerns did Governor Beshear raise about UK leadership?
He's coming back. I'm excited about that. Jack Givens, I think, said there were times he was as good as anybody on the floor last year. Best player in practice at some time, some points. His brother, I don't know how good his brother is. This may have been a case where they said, we want Braden to stay, but will you take Zion? I got no problem with it if they did. You have 15 roster spots now.
You used to have 12, then you had 13. Now you got 15. They ain't going to all play. I'm fine throwing a flyer on this kid. Really, what matters is your top nine or ten. Right. If you want to take Zion Hawthorne, I'm fine with it. How about you? I think he's just also gives you a little more depth at point guard.
They've had a little problem with depth at point guard, so now you've got the Williams kid. Well, now you have four guys who can play point guard. We may need all four of them the way things have gone. I was going to have Braden back. There was word that he was going to play, but then he got hurt. Then word came out that he really wasn't hurt, that he didn't play him.
So I'm kind of confused how that all played out, but they definitely could have used him this year. So yeah, I'm fine with it. I think I have been very adamant about taking up for UK fans. I had a moment, Shannon, I was disappointed in some yesterday. When that announcement happened, I thought some of the postings under the announcement were wrong by Kentucky fans.

Because that kid's going to see that. Yeah. And that kid did nothing wrong, right? He should be excited to be here. So I do hope ā listen, I'm as frustrated when they don't get guys I want. But, like, don't take it out on this random ā
kid we might end up looking and he might end up being really good and he's going to be like the 14th or 15th man it doesn't really matter shannon like that's not the moment to express frustration about other things and if i could tell you the last thing you need right now is to lose players so if you lost him because you refuse to take his player you know it's good you get hawthorne back now you get his brother so you filled in another roster spot he may not get much playing time but you gotta but that's okay i mean somebody right last year's roster spot two of the roster spots were reese potter and braden hawthorne who didn't play
yep correct so now if one of them is his brother what difference does it make right you're not gonna play no difference it makes it makes no difference so don't be like there's no reason to be rude about it and maybe he'll be good i don't know but braden hawthorne i think they expect they would not have brought him back ryan unless they thought he would be in the rotation i really think they're excited about having him as part of the program want to kind of help build with him as part of the program so i think it was kind of a good get for him yesterday yeah uh
So now we find out what's next. Louisville got another big commitment yesterday, didn't they? They did. But you know what? I just want to have a roster. Field of 68 and ESPN both put out in their preseason top 25s. We weren't in either one of them yet. One of them we were 37th and one of them we were 44th. So I'm pretty concerned about us getting just players.

Chapter 5: What is the significance of the law school dean's hiring process?
We all of a sudden are a more positive fan base if we get Stokes. What's concerning for me is going from two schools to three schools because if you lose them to Oregon, it's what we talked about yesterday. Losing to Oregon is the worst possible situation. It's kind of like what happened with Donnie Freeman.
Losing to Kansas is bad, Shannon, but losing to Oregon would be worse. Especially if he's picking it just based on a Nike school and you picked Oregon Nike over Kentucky Nike.
Go back to last Friday. Donnie Freeman cancels his visit to UConn. Looks good for Kentucky. Then here comes St. John's out of nowhere and takes them. I hope this isn't the case with what's going to happen with Oregon.
But what if they were to get it? What if they were just to randomly pull the number one player in the country?
We're talking ourselves into No. 9 this upcoming season.
Well, I still think we're a little ways apart from that. I mean, that's just our fan base, though. But, I mean, we would immediately put a jolt of energy into all this.
Immediately. Overnight. We're excited about what Mark Pope is doing at Kentucky basketball program.
I think we'd be excited about the fact that we got this guy.
No doubt we would be excited.

You know, like everything ā if you don't listen, everything bad that happens is us. But I'm now talking ā this guy that wrote me is a listener.

What would you suggest? Are there people out there that are very excited that we're just not hearing from? Because we opened up the phones yesterday. And we didn't get those calls.
Right now we've got one caller and I asked her, I said, are you going to make the positive case? She goes, no.

It's just they're making the choice not to come on. Anything. Not just me. So... That's what I said. We need to hear from him at times. Our fan base, we need to hear from our leader. So there's a lot of people saying they think we're objective, and I appreciate all that. All right, so now there are people on. Lauren, go ahead, Lauren. Hey, first-time caller. Who are?
I think you guys are totally objective. I listen every day, maybe sometimes twice a day if I don't feel like I heard everything you said. Um, my question is, do you all think that these recruits are too soft and they don't want the heat? I don't blame them. No, I actually don't think that's it.
I mean, there is some talk that, that, that Christian Collins, maybe that some of the folks around him didn't like the sort of idea of, of, of, of fan comments. But I think that's, I don't think that has a huge part, no. I appreciate the call.
It might have for like one player, but in general, no, because the thing is there's a reason why these players come and they go, hey, BBN, where are you at? Think about how many times you've seen those posts, right? Because they love the ā we give more positive attention too. Absolutely. So, yeah, we do give negative, some people, but go look how many positive comments people send.
And when they show up, we follow them on all their social medias. They love that stuff. They love it. They love it.
You may have heard, though, this isn't for everyone. Not everybody can deal with the spotlight here.
But you know, Cal was right about that. Yeah. Right. And I will tell you, the football staff, both the last one and this one, would use me and others to pump up that because they knew how much the players liked it.
Yes.
Right? They got it. They would go, hey, this guy's here. And then all of a sudden I would retweet it and dozens of people would say, come here. And then other schools don't get that as much, even in football. So that's an advantage that we have that we should use. Patrick, go ahead. Hey, first time, long time. Who are?
