Chapter 3: What recent news is impacting the Kentucky sports community?
Listen to Look Back At It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones.
Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, April the 23rd. I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill where we have a... Beautiful day outside, and the Owen County Media Class is here for their annual visit. They put on a television show, including they have segments, one of which we may recreate here in the second hour. Nice. We'll see what happens.
But you can give a shout out to Clark's Pump and Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. Aviation Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-774-5254. And this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. You call TJ, he'll make them pay. Ryan Lemon is here with me, and we didn't, a little bit of a surprise, we are joined, everybody give a round of applause to new father, Drew Franklin, who is, who stopped by.
With Avery Rose, how old, nine days? Nine days. Thought she needed to go see KS Bar. Nine days is, you know, that's enough time to rest. Let's get her in here. We ID'd, she's good. Abby is here as well, and so nine days in, how's fatherhood? Nine days, about nine hours of sleep in that window. But other than that, it's been awesome. Obviously, I'm very in love and obsessed and loving dad life.
Are you really? Oh, yeah. And honestly, the stuff people say is rough. It's not that bad. You can change a diaper. I've changed several. It's fine. It's just I wish I could sleep a little more. But overall, I'd say it's been very, very fun. So what's a night of sleep that you usually get? A couple hours here and there. Abby's up the most, but I've had a few 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.
shifts where I'm just sitting there holding her and just giving her a little bounce, just staring at her for four hours. But those start to add up. The pictures of you all, it's all something you would see in an album. You're sitting there staring at her. It's colored in a certain way. She likes a good dad nap in the aesthetics. I think we use a filter.
It seems like you're completely embracing dadness. You're wearing a dad hat. I've got my Air Monarchs on. Of course, I'm all in. Already got dad's shoes. Okay. I've never taken these off. By the way, these are the most comfortable shoes ever. Dad's had this figured out a long time ago. I know they don't look that cool.
We've been making fun of Ryan for wearing those shoes for a decade, and now you're going to start rocking them? Now you can make fun of me. All right. Well, fair enough. Well, you seem happy. And both of you, the mother and daughter, and you all look wonderful. And it's nice of you to be by here. You've missed a lot. I've mostly stayed off my phone because she's in my arms.
I can't even reach for it. I'm using both hands. But every time I check in, something seems to be on fire.

Chapter 4: What personal experiences are shared regarding parenthood?
This would be a case where this would be a public outcry. I mean, like this started as, you know, it wasn't just us. There were other people, but just a handful of people going, wait a minute. What's going on? And then it keeps getting building louder, and then the governor gets involved.
I mean, it is kind of ā even in today's world where it feels like sometimes things are out of the fans' control, this would be one where I actually think it made a difference. I think it made a huge difference. Again, if it happens. If it happens. I'm just telling you the scuttlebutt.
You know, I'm seeing ā it feels like they're on their CYA a little bit, but if they do that, it is a good PR move on behalf of Kentucky, University of Kentucky. Like, we're going to rip this up.
We realize we made a mistake. We're going to correct it and rip this up. Well, I'd be interested to see what the legal ā like, I mean, if they sign that deal ā I don't know what ripping it up means. I'd be interested to see the mechanics because if you sign the deal, you sign the deal. I don't know exactly how that works. Maybe they'll characterize it as Mitch volunteering to not.
Although, how many people just give up $5 million? I don't think there's a lot of people that do that. I don't know how it's going to play out, but this is just what I hear is very likely to be the end result. Yeah, I don't know how that worked because we've seen the contract. It's got Eli's big signature, Mitch's. I mean, it looks pretty official and finalized. But this was entirely predictable.
When you make a decision, to you youngsters out there, if you end up working in PR, when you make a decision that affects a lot of people, and then when people ask you about it, you tell them to shut up, and you say, you know, we get to do what we want, and you have no explanation as to why ā It's not crazy to me that this would be the result. I think they thought this would just go away.
I think they thought, like, oh, it's a short attention span.

Chapter 5: How does the conversation shift to the topic of recruiting?
People will move on. And people didn't move on. And then I think the final straw is when the governor gets involved. Because when the governor gets involved and all of a sudden this decision, which was made in a room ā I mean, think about this. This was made in a room with Mitch Barnhart, Eli, and then whoever Eli had. I don't know who was there. But there were three or four of them.
They got no approval from anybody. And they probably thought, we're going to sneak this out, and then it's going to be gone. And then you go, and a month later... It's one of the headline stories on ESPN. It's in the New York Times. Like, all of a sudden you go, but see, if they had just done a press conference and dealt with it, I think it probably goes away.
People might not be happy about it, but they handled it so poorly. that you end up with this result. You're right. They have a news conference to announce the details. Reporters get to ask questions. But then they move on. It would have been a difficult 45 minutes probably. But then people would have probably moved on. But by not doing it, it's the drip. This is the thing.
When you have something bad happen from a publicity standpoint ā Rip the Band-Aid off. Just deal with it. It's the drip of just constant, like Mike Vrabel and Diana Rossini. I don't know if the thing with the coach and the reporter dating. If they had just dealt with it, Then it could go away. But they didn't do anything. And then it drips and drips and drips.
And, Drew, that's how you end up with a bad decision. Yeah, for a while we were bringing it up a lot. And, you know, people around here locally were talking about it. I was in shock the other day when the governor's tweet started it and then ESPN said it was everywhere. ESPN had it as a headline.
Mitch had to have been in his rocking chair just like, oh, my God, like this is going to get taken away from me. I do wonder, though, here's what ā can I give you the ā this is not Scuttlebutt. This is Matt reading Scuttlebutt. Okay. This is just my interpretation. I think they want to save Van Tatenhove as the law school dean. And they're just kind of throwing Mitch to the side.
No, I mean it. I think they're like, okay, the only reason anybody cares about this law school thing is because he threw in Barnhart. Just get rid of the Barnhart thing, and then we'll just move on. And people will stop paying attention on law school, and I think that's what's going to happen. So the meeting is today. Does this take place today?
I mean, I don't like to put days on things, but, I mean, you're right. The board meeting is today. It could be a very eventful board meeting today. Yeah, it could be. Now, all right, so we got ā that's my scoop and scuttlebutt. I want to go back to you for a second. Yes. Do you feel like ā you know, people say when you have a child that it comes out. Is that the right terminology?
She did come out. It comes out and then all of a sudden ā It's she, by the way. I heard people telling you last Friday. I need to stop saying it. It's okay. She. She. She's right there. She can hear you. She. She comes out, and then, like, people say your life changes. Like, at that moment, like, Ryan always says this. Do you think that ā is that what happened?

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the Mitch Barnhart contract situation?
I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

I'm talking Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing...
We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you're here on earth?
Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free iHeartRadio app, search Learn the Hard Way, and listen now. Shannon, that's got to be the song, right?
I feel like it does, yeah.
Yeah, I mean, Avery Rose. Perfect. Why are you sitting so far away from me because you're worried about what I'm going to say? Because Mario and I are on the same team right now. We've got to team up again. Shannon, they have moved. They are up here. They're, like, squeezed up next to each other, leaving me all the way over here on the other side. Why are you sitting like that, Ryan?
Because he's about to try to get mad at us. We're going to be on the same team.

Chapter 7: How do the hosts react to the public's perception of the athletic department?
Oh, you're saying he committed already? This is what I've heard. He committed already and he's got to knock out paperwork. That's what I heard. I don't know if that's true or not. This is just what I heard. All right, but you two understand. I know Ryan understands this. I need you to understand this. Although he's just as involved as you are at this point. Of course. We have a responsibility.
Whether we should or not, people give us a credibility. Absolutely. That we can't just say things. Yes. Ryan messed it up last year with Lamar Wilkinson, but I understand what happened. It happened. Anything can change at the last minute. When you guys both put eyeballs out, You're basically saying this is happening. I have a strong confidence. No, you can't be caveat.
I have confidence in my source. I've seen it, and Ryan showed me, and then I was like, all right. So did you all get two different sources? Yes, I got two different. So somebody told you, and somebody different told you. Correct. Okay, well, that's positive. All right, you've been around long enough. You know kind of what is and what isn't strong.
Do you feel good that they're going to get this Justin McBride kid? I think a ā See, as soon as he says, I think. Shannon, as soon as he says, I think. Do you think or do you know? As the preacher in Vail County says, do you think so or do you know so? I think ā In this portal world area, a verbal commitment can change overnight.
It can.
So then why put out the eyeballs? Because something's cooking. Something's cooking and it's something to look forward to. It's positivity. But it's not positivity if we don't get them. That's why we didn't link the name. But you now have. I didn't. I have. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Yes, I do.
You cannot play with these people's emotions.
I wouldn't say I was playing with them. I would say it's something that you're looking forward to. Eyeball emojis, something to be a little bit excited for.

Chapter 8: What humorous moments occur during the episode?
They do it every Monday morning. So, yeah, the hot seat segment is kind of like the ā what was that newspaper article called we liked so much back in the day?
Speak Your Peace. Speak Your Peace. Yeah, Speak Your Peace, Shannon. Do you remember Speak Your Peace in the Mountain Eagle? You could just call and leave a message and whatever you said, they'd print it in the newspaper. Do you remember? I once called in and got in on Speak Your Peace. Speak Your Peace was a great thing. Awesome. The Mountain Eagle was what it was in in Whitesburg. That's right.
Shannon, this feels like a quick question for you. Mike Vrabel, the coach of Tennessee, if you remember, there were pictures of him holding hands with a woman that wasn't his wife that's a reporter, Diana Rossini. They had interlocking fingers. They said, hey, nothing was happening here. We were each with our friends, and we were hanging out at the pool.
So apparently people said, all right, where are your friends? We saw no pictures of the friends. Zero. Yesterday, even more pictures came out of them eating breakfast together and sitting close with each other.
Oh, boy.
A couple things here. First of all, Shannon, clearly that was a private investigator, right? Absolutely. With all of those pictures, that had to be a private investigator. Probably hired by one of their significant others. You think it was hired by one of their spouses? Yes, yes, yes. I think that's got to be what it is. I do too.
Because there's no way somebody has that many pictures zoomed in from that far away. Who's following around Mike Vrabel? And who cares? They're not famous enough to be followed around by paparazzi. That's a private investigation.
Totally agree. Are you?
Yes. Okay, so Rossini resigns for her job. Mike Vrabel comes out today in a weird statement. Says he's going to skip day three of the draft. Not day one and two. day three of the draft to go get counseling and to work on his marriage. So... Shannon, I find that to be the most bizarre result of possible. Okay, if you need counseling, why are you waiting until day three of the draft?
