I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Keir Gaines.

Chapter 2: Who are the notable figures discussed in relation to Clay County basketball?
I want to give a shout-out, first of all, to the sponsors, First National Bank of Manchester, the Dave Flannery Veterans Support Fund, and the People's Rural Telephone Cooperative. Also, to these folks right here, this is the Acres of Grace Farm in Big Creek. I have to tell you, I've been hearing about Big Creek in Sneedville. I didn't know we had a Big Creek in Kentucky.
But Big Creek here in Clay County, this food, awesome. So good. You've been around since 2001? Is that right? I've got to go by there. Like, that food is awesome. From Big Creek, the Acres of Grace Farm. We've all been chomping on it during the break. Those little pinwheel sandwiches they've got are fantastic.
They really are.
Well done. That's well done. All right, so, Ryan, we're in Clay County. Give us a little Clay County facts. We've got, obviously, Richie. Give me some more Clay County people. Bobby Keith, the legendary coach. Well, we were talking about Bobby Keith. They have an invitational now in his honor coming up with the 40th anniversary of the 87 team, and he just passed away.
One of the greatest coaches this state has ever seen. And the guys that played for him may not have liked it at the time, but they loved that man. You know, he's one of those guys you just love the fact you got to play for a legend like Bobby Keith. And other players? Richie Farmer. Well, what about the rest of them? Richie Farmer's brother. And then there's Richie Farmer. Wait a minute.
Wasn't there in there like a Chadwell? Russ Chadwell.
Russ Chadwell.
And then who else am I missing? What was the kid that was like 15? What? Box head. Box head. I don't think that was his birth name was not box head. We've talked about this. You go watch Clay County play any year, there's always one big burly dude playing center. Well, I've told this story many times, but it's my favorite Clay County story.
At the Sweet 16, when I was in college, Clay County was playing, and they had a big, huge dude, probably 270 in the middle in, like, the late 90s. And they got into a little argument, and I was in the Clay County student section, and I looked at the kid next to me, and I said, will that guy fight? And he looked at me dead serious and goes, son, we're from Clay County. We all fight. Yeah.

Chapter 3: What is the impact of Bobby Keith on Kentucky basketball history?
Did you consider Richie Ballard your big rival, even though you all were so far away? Yeah. Do you want to bring him up here? I mean, he's right there. I'd like to talk to him from over there. Yeah, come on up, Richie. You can join us here in just a second. Okay, so... I do want to tell one story real quick, Ryan. You may not know this.
Okay.
Shannon and I watched it last night. So this is the ā we don't talk a lot of hockey on here, but my Carolina Hurricanes are playing the Ottawa Senators. You have to follow me on this. Ottawa in Canada. The Ottawa Senators have not been good in years. So this kid that was an Ottawa Senators fan, he makes a rap video about how the Senators are going to beat the Hurricanes.
It's the dorkiest rap video you've ever seen. You've got to look it up. It cannot be dorkier. It's to the spoof of M&M's Without Me, right? It's to the spoof. But it's so terrible. And as soon as he puts it up, everyone on the Internet ridicules him, and all the Ottawa fans are like, dude, what are you doing? You embarrassed us. This is terrible. First two games are in Carolina, Ryan.
All the bad luck goes against Ottawa. They hit the goal post a lot. They lose both games, and they were kind of unlucky. So before game three, all the fans online are like, this kid's video ruined our chances. You know what the Ottawa Senators do? What? They bought him a plane ticket and flew him to Taiwan to get as far away from the arena as possible.
And he did a video where he said, apparently I'm bad luck, so I've come to Taiwan until the series is over. The Senators sent him to Taiwan to keep him away from the games. Is that mean or is that he got a free trip to Taiwan? That's what I'm thinking here. I got a free vacation out of the deal. Clearly it worked because now they're down 3-0. Is that mean or not?
I thought you were going to say the Ottawa Senators brought him to the next game, set him front row, took care of him, gave him a jersey. I thought we were headed that way.
Send him to Taiwan. Totally didn't see that coming. That's a little brutal to send a guy to Taiwan. So then, by the way, they played last night with him in Taiwan, and they lost again. Still lost. But that's the way it goes. He ends up getting a free throw. So he's got to come home now? They're going to let a guy come home? I'm not sure what they're going to do. I want to go back.
Richie is now on here. The 87 team, people of a certain age know it. But you guys, I mean, those games against Ballard, two of the great high school games of all time, do you, like, is that like your basketball, you were that in the 92 game? Which one sticks out the most?

Chapter 4: How do the hosts view the current state of Kentucky basketball recruiting?
You feel like he's going to kind of get it going or turn it around? Well, you know, I'm a lot like you. Obviously, I know, of course, I know Coach Pope. When he played there, I was very close to the program. I was in the locker room with him the night they won the national championship in 96.
in new jersey so uh... well you know we all went out in new york that night i was right there how you remind me of richie farmer went out new york city where did you go with new york city well we went to uh... a few different places i don't i will tell you after work I don't know if I've ever heard the story about the 96 teams celebrating in New York City.
I would like to hear that, but go ahead. I'll tell you, I went with Kenny Walker. He and I, you know, he played with the Knicks. Oh, that's right, yeah. And so, you know, during that week, we went up a little early and we stayed at different places, but we rented a car and he, you know, he took me and showed me where Patrick Ewan lived, you know, and there's where we used to do this.
You know, we went to Carnegie Deli and, you know, all the big spots. So it was pretty cool. Well, good. All right, so do you think it's going to work out? I think so. You know, obviously he's a very smart coach, an intelligent coach, and with the NIL the way it is today, I mean, it's a little bit different. You ever look at Trent Noah over there? I saw Dan Mosley a minute ago.
You ever look at Trent Noah and Harlan and go, that could have been Richie Farmer? Can you imagine the Richie Farmer NIL deal back if that had existed? I would have loved to have played in this area. I can tell you that. He'd been a multi-multi-millionaire. Yeah, he would have been ā you'd have been selling insurance at the age of 18.
But I tell you, you know, I think that, you know, he's doing a good job. We just got to get some players. And I think, you know, just like you said with, you know, with Stokes, it's all about the perception of being able to get Stokes. Yeah, I completely agree with you. It's not what he does after he gets here. But anyway ā All right, so Kentucky, there's some recruits.
We mentioned the McBride kid. Kentucky's also bringing in St. John's. I think his name is the assassin who played for Patino. They got a bunch of players who are coming in over the next few days. You know, he's got to get some guys. I also think we've heard that there are going to be a couple guys that are in the draft declared right now that might pull out.
But in my opinion, Ryan, Mark's got to get one, at least one stud over the next few days. We thought, we said, you know, after they lost to OA and Aberdeen, he has to go get two guys better even than those two guys, I feel like, to make a run in the Final Four. Maybe we got one. He's still one short.
Still got to get another one for sure. Also had a visit from a 7'5 player. You want a 7'5 guy on your team?

Chapter 5: What are the implications of the new NCAA eligibility rules?
What does that mean? I would say on coaching hires, on player development, on recruiting, anything. The guy is a wealth of knowledge, and it feels like we never talk to him. Well, I mean, first of all, I don't know that we don't ever talk to him, but also he's got to want to be involved. He has a job, or at least has had a job for a long time.
Correct, but you can't tell me somebody at UK can't just say, Well, he's not going to know recruiting. Pat Riley's not going to know high school recruiting. He doesn't know those kids. No, I'm not saying he will, but the guy is around. I've been to several of the big tournaments around the country, and every now and then you see him at those. Yeah. Well, I appreciate the call.
It has been odd to me over the years, Ryan, that Pat Riley is not as associated with Kentucky basketball as you would think for a guy that is that famous. I'm not sure why that is, but it's always been kind of odd. I used to have to give him a pass because he was coaching during the season when we were playing. Then he was a GM during the season when we were playing. He's retired now.
You know, he did come back to the last celebration they had honoring him. Did you ever get to know him during your time? I did not. He did come one time for something, and he spoke coming during Coach Patino had him come in and talk to us before the game, but I never did. The only thing I ever heard about him is that he was on that 66 team, the team that lost to Texas Western.
And, of course, you know, history has kind of made that a very important moment where the all-black team beat an all-white team. You know, for Pat, I mean, we were kind of cast in the villain role in that, and I think for Pat that's always been something that, at least for a while, kind of kept him. He didn't want to be associated on the wrong side of this moment.
But nowadays, I mean, I'd love to have him back. I think it would be great. Everyone's checking the odds at Keeneland, but don't also bet against your skin health. While you're soaking up the sun and getting outside, make sure to see if anything's unusual on your skin. Go to the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center, locations in Owensboro, Bowling Green, Franklin, Glasgow, and Patterley.
I just got my skin checked the other day. You should as well. skincancercenter.com, 270-842-1999. It's the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center. We'll take a break and be right back here in Manchester. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Two percent. That is the number of people who take the stairs when there is also an escalator available. I'm Michael Easter, and on my podcast, 2%, I break down the science of mental toughness, fitness, and building resilience in our strange modern world.
I'll be speaking with writers, researchers, and other health and fitness experts and more to look past the impractical and way too complex pseudoscience that dominates the wellness industry.

In 2023, former Bachelor star Clayton Eckerd found himself at the center of a paternity scandal. The family court hearings that followed revealed glaring inconsistencies in her story. This began a years-long court battle to prove the truth.
You doctored this particular test twice, Ms. Owens, correct?
I doctored the test once. It took an army of internet detectives to crack the case.
I wanted people to be able to see what their tax dollars were being used for. Sunlight's the greatest disinfectant.

Chapter 7: What are the latest updates on Kentucky football recruiting?
And wrestling. And wrestling. I mean, you got to know K. Wood. You know him better certainly than I do. I did. And, you know, occasionally I'll see circulating online the deal where I got a chance to speak with uh, about him because, uh, when, you know, my senior year was his last year.
Yes.
And so, um, on senior day, they, uh, after practice, you know, the, the sports information director just came in and said, well, uh, coach Patino and I have decided that you will represent all of the former players and you'll say something about K. Yeah. That's a lot of pressure. That was a lot of pressure because I can tell you that, you know, playing ball, I would get nervous.
But as soon as it's thrown up, you know, no big deal. But I can tell you that I didn't sleep well that night thinking because here was the deal. I said, okay, what am I going to say? And they said, you'll think of something. So, you know, they had a lot more confidence in me than I had in myself at the time. But I can tell you, you know, I just got to thinking about it.
And I said, what hasn't been said about K-Wood already? But I got a chance to say that, you know, he certainly was one of my heroes. And like you said, growing up in eastern Kentucky, and people don't realize it wasn't like it is today where every game is available on TV. No, not at all. Maybe three, four games a year was on national TV.
And so, you know, I used to ā I said that night that K. Wood was the eyes and ears. He was Kentucky basketball. to most of the fans in eastern Kentucky because that's the way that they heard it, through his words. And coming from, you know, Harlan County and coming up through, I mean, he was the voice not just of Kentucky in the tournament. He would do the national championship.
He very famously did the Kentucky-Duke game in 92, then went and did the national championship game where Duke played Michigan. That was actually his last game.
Yeah.
And somebody came up to him and said, Kaywood, you know, congrats on your last game. And he said, my last game was last week in Philly, which is one of my greats, which is, I think, one of the neat kind of stories of all time. I also love the legend of Kaywood Ledford, Ryan, that he used to smoke cigarettes during the game and keep them under the table there.

Chapter 8: How do the hosts reflect on the legacy of Kaywood Ledford?
All right, so this came in from the text machine. I want you three guys to answer.
All right.
Which is going to happen first, Kentucky wins the SEC and comes in first place or wins nine games in football?
Oh, gosh.
Now, there would have been most years of Kentucky history, the answer to that question would be win the SEC in basketball. That would have been almost universally the case. But considering where it is, et cetera, what would you say?
I know the football team is making improvements, but that schedule coming up this year is going to be really tough, so it's not going to happen this upcoming season. Probably not going to happen this year. I don't think it's going to happen for the basketball team this season either. But I think probably I would still go basketball wins the SEC before we get nine in football.
Yeah, Shannon said that schedule, we're playing all these SEC games now. I'll probably guess basketball, too, because I think there's still some magic left in the basketball program, and I think he's able to get the right guys that can maybe do this. I'm going basketball. I'm going to say basketball, but it's a lot closer than people think.
I mean, this recruiting that Will Stein is doing, I mean, I know you guys heard him on the show ā It's not getting enough attention because it's in the portal. But we have the ninth highest ranked recruiting class in the country right now in football. Ninth. Nuts. That's nuts. We have the top quarter. Think about this. The top quarterback in America that has committed to a school.
The number one quarterback hasn't committed. But the number one quarterback that has committed to a school, Richie, is coming to Kentucky. He picked Kentucky over everyone.
