Chapter 2: How did Aga and her family find out about Shaun's accident?
We've been at home and everybody was getting ready, you know, for bed. And as usual, Sean was out with his friends. But because his girlfriend Leila was supposed to stay with us, you know, for over a weekend, Sean usually comes back home earlier. So we were expecting him around half nine, sort of like that. But he was not coming back home. So Leila texted him. and said, Sean, where are you?
Are you coming back? And it was quarter to 10 when it was the last text. And Sean said, I'm on my way home.
Chapter 3: What were the initial medical concerns regarding Shaun's injuries?
It will be a few minutes. And around quarter past 10, Sean's phone was off. And we sort of knew that there was something wrong because it usually takes him about 10, maximum 15 minutes to get home. So I texted Sean and said, Sean, everything OK? No response. Obviously, his phone was still off. And then around maybe half an hour later or not really half an hour, we got a call.
My husband got a call from Sean's best friend saying that there was an awful accident in Sanctuary Avenue and it might be Sean's. So basically, we ran out of the house and went to the closest hospital, which was Beaumont. But in Beaumont Hospital, they didn't have anybody named Sean Narlock.
Chapter 4: What was the emotional impact of seeing Shaun in ICU?
So I kindly asked the receptionist, you know, can you check any other hospital? Have they taken Sean? So she rang around Blanchardstown and found out that Mater Hospital took Sean into emergency department. So we went over there. and we were standing in front of the emergency room, not even knowing if Sean was alive or not.
We waited around three hours, and two consultants came out to me and told me the whole scenario, what happened, what is Sean's condition, and what he's going to go through.
Okay. And we were waiting. What did they tell you? What did the consultant say?
Chapter 5: How did Shaun's condition evolve after the surgery?
Well, at first... When they came out to me, they only wanted to speak to me. So they said his right ankle is very crushed and we need to operate on it. So the left leg, we knew that the left femur was broken completely. It was an open wound, open breakage. But they were more concerned about the right leg at the very beginning.
because there was no blood flow into the foot, and they were very concerned about that. And then they said, okay, we will try to, during the operation at night, we will try to find the blood flow and, you know, make sure that the circulation is back. So we came back. That was it.
Chapter 6: What thoughts did Shaun have upon waking up in the hospital?
That was the last time I saw it. They said there was no injuries to his head. Thank God the helmet saved his life. It was mainly the legs that were very, very badly injured. And so the next morning we came in and he was in ICU department.
And that was one of the most horrific images that I could ever experience as a mother going into ICU department, seeing my son stuck into the machine and all beeping everywhere. Do you know, it's just something that you don't want to experience ever in your life. And we've seen that his right ankle that was supposedly very, very badly crushed had an external fixture. That's what they told me.
That was what was, you know, it's an orthopedic.
Chapter 7: How has Shaun's perspective on life changed after the accident?
And then his left femur was covered, but the left calf was very, very swollen. So we were not sure what's going on in there. So then another consultant, plastic consultant, Dr. O'Neill, came in and he explained that actually the right ankle, they were able to fix it, but now their concern is the left leg. Because apparently there was a damage caused through the femur that went through the calf.
I don't really know the whole medical terminology to explain it to you, but it didn't look well.
So at this stage, I mean, what are they telling you about possible outcomes? Like, you know, are you just worried that, you know, the legs would be damaged, they might be weakened or that, you know, he might have kind of ongoing issues? What are they saying about what might need to happen here?
Well, Sean, first of all, was put in induced coma just basically to help the body react to antibiotics and everything that they were doing. And they said that if they're not going to find the blood flow, because as I said, it's now the left ankles became a concern to them.
Chapter 8: What are the next steps for Shaun's recovery and prosthetic leg?
And they said they will not find the blood flow to the left foot. they might, you know, basically, they didn't say at the very beginning that they're going to amputate the leg, but they said that there might be a huge damage to the muscle and he might not be able to walk.
So at what point do they use the word amputate with you? At what point does that start to be talked about?
I think it was approximately a week and a half when We've noticed that his fingers, his toes, I'm sorry, his toes are getting black. We were talking to the consultants. They said, like, what is happening here? And they started to say, listen, we need to do this. We need to do that first to check if we're going to find.
So first they said to me, we will remove all the muscles from the calf and see if it will help. but he will not be able to stand or walk on that foot again because basically there is not going to be any support around the bone of the calf.
Then they said it will be the decision that obviously we won't make him to take when he's going to wake up because after two weeks, almost two weeks, they said they will need to start to sort of wake him up, start waking him up. But I said, like, you know, what are we waiting here now for?
And he said, well, we need to see if it's not going to make him intoxicated, if the toxins from that damaged muscle are not going to start making him sick. So that's when it's basically when it all came to me and I started, you know, yourself when you when you're at home. And you go home after all that, all full day long spent with Sean, you go home, you Google.
It's just natural instinct of a mother. You just go to Google and say, what happens if a muscle is damaged, is being removed? What is the next step? And that's what the next step was. And then the following morning, I got a call and said, there is a chance, there is a possibility that their sepsis is going to spread into his organism.
Okay.
And I'm sorry. You know, we need to make that decision. I know you didn't want that. It's a horrific thing to do. But we have no choice. We have to show Sean's life.
