Chapter 1: What is The Golden Bachelor and how is it different from other reality shows?
Hello and welcome back to the Maths For New Podcast with me, Joshua Fox. And firstly, I got a sponsor if you just heard that little ad there at the start. Apologies for that if you didn't enjoy it, but also got rent to pay. So yeah, there's an advert for you. And now secondly, apologies that I have been MIA for a few weeks now.
And I can't really say much at this very moment, but I may have been off traveling around Australia for... filming something very exciting that you may be able to watch and stream in maybe like a month's time and it may also be like a brand new type of reality show which has never been done before but you know they're all just maybes wink wink nudge nudge who knows um but for now
On the subject of reality television, as most of this year's Married at First Sight cast have now started to fade into oblivion, which is what happens every year this time of the year, a group of wholesome pensioners have stepped into their spotlight after The Golden Bachelor premiered on Channel 9 earlier this week. And you know what? This show is kind of messy.
Like it may seem wholesome and cute so far on the screen, but like I've got the behind the scenes gossip and the drama and all the rumors that are now spilling and leaking. And yeah, God, it makes maths kind of look low key. And if you haven't watched it yet, I think what I'm going to get into next will make you want to tune in ASAP.
All right, so before I get to the drama, let me just bring everyone up to date so we're all on the same page. As we all know, the Golden Bachelor is essentially just a normal bachelor back here in Australia, back on our screens. But instead of having like some young muscly dude who wants to get Insta-famous, we're going for people aged...
or 50 and over aka golden people is that what we call old people now apparently so um yeah it's basically just the bachelor for old people and this year's leading man is 61 year old barry the bear myden i know one thing for sure i'm nervous as hell but in this tux i kind of feel like james bond i think it's time for me to find someone to love Now, a quick point here.
Is calling a man in his 60s bear a bit cringe? Because to me it is. And that's what he's going by on the show and like in interviews and everything. Like no one's calling him Barry. He's just known as bear. And also in my world, the gay world, when you're called bear, it means something completely different. And this bear is not a gay bear.
But anyway, Golden Bear, I'm going to call him Big Bear from now on. Big Bear is originally from Canada. He's a father to three boys and he sadly lost his wife, Audrey, 14 years ago. And he's now ready to settle down again with somebody new. Hopefully, you know, he's open to finding love again.
And when it comes to the ladies that Channel 9 have cast for him on the show, it seems he might just find that somebody. Because you know how unmarried at first sight, like if you asked all of the brides in there what they're looking for in a guy, they'd list things like, oh, well, he must have a Range Rover. He must have a sleeve full of tattoos. He must have a blue tick on Instagram.

Chapter 2: What behind-the-scenes drama is emerging from The Golden Bachelor?
He's a silver fox. Being a good human. Being good in bed. And not necessarily in that order.
And by the end of the first episode of Golden Bachelor earlier this week, everyone basically assumed that Big Bear is gonna pick this lovely lady, Jeanette, who read him this very sweet poem.
I'm shaking a little bit. Oh gosh, look at me. You want me to hold your hand? Thank you. I may be golden, but my spirit is ageless. A heart that dances, wild and courageous. Five year solo, a chapter I am ready to end, a brand new story ready to be penned. If you're ready for laughter, for passion, for fun, then perhaps our journey has just begun. Oh, that's beautiful. And that is for you.
Thank you. That's beautiful. Thank you. I feel incredibly honored that Jeanette showed me that level of vulnerability. Cracked open something in me, actually. Something I haven't felt in a very long time.
Anyway, quick side note. You know how I'm like low-key a writer myself and did the book last year and stuff. Well, I took it upon myself to rewrite Jeanette's poem from my perspective as if that was me stood up there with Big Bear. So I'm gonna now like, you know, cut between Jeanette's version and Josh's version and you guys just make up your mind which one you like the most.
I may be golden, but my spirit is ageless. A heart that dances. wild and courageous.
Not sure why I'm here, Bear, but I'd like to see you undress. I've got a thing for older guys that I must express.
Five years solo. A chapter I am ready to end. A brand new story ready to be penned.
Nobody wants me. Why? I can't comprehend. I don't like the name Bear. That, I can't pretend.

Chapter 3: Who is the leading man of The Golden Bachelor and what is his background?
And bear in mind, this was like two weeks after filming for this season wrapped. So, you know, he should still be in the honeymoon phase, all loved up with whoever he chose at the end of the show. And they're now a couple. But instead, here he is on the red carpet talking about checking out all the hot women on the red carpet.
Congrats, you're our new golden bachelor. I mean, you're on the Logies red carpet. So I'm taking it all in. There's so many beautiful ladies. Eyeing people here on the carpet too, so options still open? No, well, I can't say much on that, but we'll see how it goes. There's rumors going around that maybe, you know, you prefer a younger gal. That's, no, that's rumors. Yes, that's rumors.
And you know who happened to be a few feet away from Big Bear on that red carpet when he said that? Samantha Armitage. Anyway, so fast forward to this week at the show's premiere, so we're now a few months since filming wrapped, and here's Big Bear once again, this time talking to So Sidney, and he's basically just making it seem like, yo, he picks nobody at the end of this season.
We're so close to it coming out, which means we're close to it finishing, which means we can go public eventually. Are you excited to finally go public with your new missus? Oh, that's assuming that I've chosen someone. Ooh, true. You're going to have to watch and find out. We're not getting anything out of you. All I can tell you is I made the right decision.
So yeah, this week we've got Big Bear saying shit like that in interviews, which isn't very hopeful for those wanting a happy ending. And then at the same time, we've got Samantha Armitage, who, just a note, split from her husband in December last year, doing her own press tour to promote the show.
And she's over there talking to Jess Rowe about her finding love again and hinting at happiness and all that.
And now love. Do you think you'll find love again, Sammy? Of course I'll find love again. I mean, I'm keeping my options open. I am fine. Don't worry about me. I'm having fun as always. But, yes, I mean, I will find love again for sure. I don't know when. When the time is right, it will arrive. And I'll be very good at choosing this type. It's hard to find the right person.
And then, if that wasn't proof enough that Sammy Amateur just stolen Big Bear from iJan, iJanette and all the other lovely old ladies, this basically sums up what all the cast members are now saying in their own interviews this week.
Australia's latest reality show, The Golden Bachelor, has been praised by contestants for its focus on women supporting women. One of the show's contestants, dressage team manager Lauren, told Yahoo Lifestyle about how different the reality show can be with mature aged participants. The 60 year old explained,
