Overall, I actually enjoy the work, but the rooms after bachelor parties, birthdays, or other different types of nights out are the absolute worst. For whatever reason, drunk people always manage to throw up on the only carpeted part of the room instead of, say, I don't know, the bathroom floor?
Cleaning hard floors is one thing, but scrubbing vomit out of carpet takes forever, and it completely throws off my schedule, on top of being utterly disgusting. Well, one of today's rooms was on an entirely different level. There was trash everywhere, food shoved down the sides of the bed, empty bottles all over the place, and multiple patches of dried vomit all across the room. It looked like whoever had been here, they'd made absolutely no effort to clean up after themselves before just checking out. It took me so much longer than it should have just to get the room back into decent shape. Near the end of the cleaning, I happened to find a birthday card lying on the floor. It still had the envelope around it, but it was open, so I glanced at it before tossing it in the trash.
Inside, it's something along the lines of, Happy birthday. I love you so much. Have an amazing birthday weekend, and I'm going to miss you so, so much. Love, Beth. Okay, nothing unusual there. But when I closed the card, I noticed what was written on the front of the envelope. To my amazing boyfriend. Okay, well, that made me pause for a second. because earlier while cleaning the room up, I'd picked up multiple empty condom wrappers, the used contents of which were now in the trash, along with a pair of women's underwear tangled up in the sheets, and a dress that had been ripped badly enough that it was obviously ruined. At first, I'd assumed whoever had stayed there had just left the clothes behind on purpose and expected housekeeping to throw everything away.
That's not new, and normally that's exactly what I would have done. But after spending the better part of my early shift scraping dried food off furniture and cleaning vomit out of carpet because this guy couldn't be bothered to behave like an adult, I suddenly wasn't feeling particularly generous. So instead of throwing the dress and underwear away, I took both items down to reception and logged them into our lost and found with the guest's room number. At our hotel, whenever something valuable or personal is turned in, an automated email gets sent to the guest. As an extra precaution, a copy is also sent to the emergency contact that we have on file in case the guest misses it. Every lost item report includes photographs and a description of whatever was found.
So sometime very soon, our birthday boy is going to receive a polite email informing him that housekeeping recovered a torn dress and a pair of women's underwear from his room. Oh, and so is his emergency contact, who just happens to be Beth. his loving girlfriend. I'm going to go back to the beginning and reiterate that I wasn't trying to do a public service here. I was just really annoyed after cleaning one of the nastiest rooms I've had since starting this job. If you're going to cheat on your significant other, at the very least, don't piss off the housekeeper.
I'm a guy, I'm 36 now, and this happened over the course of several years.
Before I get into it, I should probably explain the main people involved. Rebecca is my ex-wife, James was one of my college friends, and the man that Rebecca cheated on me with. Sal is another close friend of mine, and Lisa is his cousin. Rebecca and I were what you would call college sweethearts.
