What is the creepy farm encounter that sets the tone for the episode?

Unknown 0:17
I'm originally from a pretty big city, but when I was a kid, my family spent a lot of weekends out at our grandparents' small farm in the countryside. As a kid, I always thought being out in the middle of nowhere meant you were safer. There were barely any people around, no traffic, no strangers walking past the house. It was just quiet. This experience completely changed the way that I looked at that. I was fourteen at the time. My granddad's birthday was the next day, and a bunch of our extended family was coming over to celebrate. My parents and grandparents needed to go into town to buy food and other things for the party, and I decided to stay behind. I don't remember exactly how long they expected to be gone.

I just knew it would be a while because getting anywhere from the farm? Took time. I was perfectly happy staying behind anyway. I had video games to play, so as soon as the door shut. That was basically all I cared about. I completely lost track of time. Now the farm was extremely isolated. It sat at the end of a long dirt road, and there really wasn't much reason for anyone to come down there unless they were specifically going to one of the properties in the area. At some point while I'm playing, I notice my grandparents' dogs barking toward the front gate. And this wasn't regular inquisitive barking either. They sounded angry. That got my attention because these dogs usually weren't like that. I went to the window and I saw a car stopped at our gate.

I don't remember what color it was because the entire thing was covered in that thick red dust that gets all over cars on dirt roads. What I do remember very clearly though was that it was an older beat up sedan. It resembled a car that my older cousin owned at that time, so I recognized the shape almost immediately. That's when I saw a man get out of the car. Then he opened up the gate. My grandparents didn't lock the gate during the day, so there was nothing stopping him from letting himself onto the property. He then got back into the driver's side of the car, drove through, and then started coming up towards the house. No, at this point, I wasn't scared or anything. I just assumed maybe this guy was lost or looking for one of my grandparents.

I went out onto the front veranda to see what he wanted. As he got closer though, something felt incredibly off. He stopped the car on the gravel near the steps and looked me up and down from the driver's seat. Then I noticed him looking over at the empty space where my grandpa normally parked his truck. He asked me if my dad was home, although again I think he met my grandfather. He gave me some excuse about work that needed to be done on a fence or some kind of repair. I honestly don't remember his exact explanation anymore. But what I can recall is the way that he was looking around. Thankfully, even though I was only 14 at the time, I had enough city instincts not to tell some random dude that I was completely alone in this isolated house.

So I lied. I told him my dad was inside sleeping and that I would go get him if he wanted. The guy didn't bat an eyelash though, he just stood there. For a second he tried looking past me through the open doorway into the house. Then he looked back at me and said something akin to Are you sure he's in there? I don't see his truck anywhere. That was the big red flag that something here was wrong. But even through that, I tried not to react. I told him my dad's truck was parked in the shed out back. Before you could ask me anything, I turned around, walked inside, shut the door behind me and locked it. Now officially crossing that threshold and to terrify. This was well before we had reliable cell service out there, and there was no internet at the farm either.
Unknown 3:55
I had no easy way of contacting my parents or grandparents. I didn't know what the man was doing outside. But I wasn't just gonna sit in the living room and idly wait. I went and I grabbed the air rifle that I used for shooting targets around the farm and ran and placed myself in the bathroom.
