Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

6.967 - 27.135 Kimberly Adams

Hello, everyone. I'm Kimberly Adams. Welcome back to Make Me Smart, where none of us is as smart as all of us. Thanks for joining us, whether you're watching the YouTube live stream or listening to the podcast. It's Friday, which means it is time for Economics on Tap. And today we're going to be talking about what all of us have been following in the news all week long.

27.115 - 48.685 Kimberly Adams

What's been happening in Minnesota in the wake of last week's ice shooting in Minneapolis, continued ice raids in the area, protests in response to it and more. I know a lot of us have been watching these videos and paying attention to what's going on. So we wanted to get some on the ground perspective. And thankfully, we have a wonderful local reporter here with us who has been covering this.

This story, joining me to talk about this is Dana Ferguson. She's a political correspondent for NPR News, and the whole team at NPR News has been doing just an incredible job covering what's been going on in Minnesota. And I'm not just saying that because we have the same parent company. It's because you guys have been really doing amazing work under incredibly difficult circumstances.

71.732 - 74.115 Kimberly Adams

Dana, welcome to the show, but how are you holding up?

0

75.007 - 79.875 Dana Ferguson

Thank you, Kimberly. I'm hanging in there is what I would say. It's been a week.

81.137 - 93.117 Kimberly Adams

It has been. But hopefully, you know, it is so important, especially in times like this, to take a minute to rest, to decompress. Hopefully we can do that here. What did you bring to drink?

93.586 - 108.503 Dana Ferguson

Oh, I brought with me – it's kind of boring, but I brought some water. Not boring at all. I need to hydrate this week. It's been a lot, so just trying to make sure that – taking care of myself so I can keep doing the best job I can. I love that.

Chapter 2: What recent events in Minnesota have sparked community concern?

108.523 - 111.19 Dana Ferguson

But I hope people have more fun beverages than that.

0

111.727 - 130.079 Kimberly Adams

Well, you know, that's really fun, though, because taking care of yourself is so important, especially in such high stress situations. You're working long hours. I'm sure your immunity is taking a hit. So good on you for drinking water. And I know that economics on tap is supposed to be a happy hour, but like, let's be real. We can't be upbeat all the time.

130.139 - 142.257 Kimberly Adams

What's been going down in Minnesota has been just awful. awful. St. Paul, where you are, is right next to Minneapolis, hence the Twin Cities moniker. What has it been like in the community over the past several weeks?

0

143.519 - 169.734 Dana Ferguson

I mean, I think for me and for a lot of people here, it's very it's like stepping back in time a little bit to 2020. There have been a lot of situations that are pretty similar to both COVID lockdowns and also a lot of the unrest and protests that happened after George Floyd's murder. There are a lot of schools that are going to virtual learning because folks are afraid of ICE enforcement.

0

170.596 - 190.011 Dana Ferguson

A lot of small businesses are closed for the same reasons. But also there's a lot of feeling of community sort of coming together and neighbors supporting each other, similar to what it was like back then. Folks have signs put up in their windows, just expressing support for one another.

190.151 - 202.332 Dana Ferguson

And a lot of folks come out and just say, you know, we're very proud to be Minnesota and to all be here together. And so just trying to stick in there through the really tough times.

203.662 - 217.215 Kimberly Adams

You know, as I mentioned at the top, a lot of us are seeing these viral videos of ICE arrests. And watch out for AI deepfakes on those, y'all, because not all of these are real. But what are people not seeing online?

217.718 - 243.135 Dana Ferguson

Yeah. I mean, to be sure, these videos are everywhere. There are many of them. I think there are not as many of the folks who are just standing in their neighborhoods kind of patrolling, trying to make sure that if ICE officers come into their community, that they're letting neighbors know they're blowing their whistles or honking their horns. Recently, a lot of this has filtered.

243.616 - 271.228 Dana Ferguson

It's still Minneapolis-St. Paul, but it's also enforcement out in the suburbs. It's enforcement out in smaller towns around the state. So folks that really weren't prepared for some of this because it's Operation Metro Surge are seeing ICE officers come to rural gas stations, ask people to see their papers and scaring folks out of going to work or different things.

Chapter 3: How are small businesses in Minnesota reacting to ICE enforcement?

852.13 - 855.317 Kimberly Adams

Drew Jostad is here to host. Drew, what have you got for us?

0

855.878 - 859.827 Drew Jostad

First up, ice skating or ice fishing?

0

862.693 - 866.481 Dana Ferguson

I have never gone ice fishing, so I think I'm team ice skating.

0

868.081 - 871.466 Kimberly Adams

For the same reasons, I am also team ice skating.

0

Chapter 4: How has the sense of community changed during recent events?

871.486 - 891.733 Kimberly Adams

I taught myself to ice skate a couple years ago, and I actually have my own set of ice skates, and I love it. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, and I know our producer Courtney is an ice skater. Elizabeth Troval, who's our immigration reporter and energy reporter, does ice skating. We've got a good contingent of ice skaters at Marketplace, and I'm sure you all do in Minnesota as well.

0

891.753 - 909.045 Kimberly Adams

Are you figure skates or hockey skates? I am not fall down skates. Oh, you mean what physical kind of skates? Yeah. They're figure skates. Sorry. I was like, I'm not doing any of that. I am staying upright on the ice, but they're figure skates, not hockey skates.

0

910.208 - 910.609

Awesome. Okay. Yeah.

0

910.589 - 912.291 Kimberly Adams

All right. What's the next one, Drew?

0

912.311 - 915.315 Drew Jostad

You ever hear about the Norwegian who went ice fishing?

916.837 - 917.077 Kimberly Adams

No.

917.157 - 924.467 Drew Jostad

He brought home 50 pounds of ice. All right. Next up, Minnesota food.

924.487 - 928.492 Dana Ferguson

I feel like you're going to say lutefisk.

929.213 - 940.427 Drew Jostad

Oh, yeah. Did you recognize my last name is Norwegian? Anyway. Minnesota food. Next up, a juicy Lucy or a tater tot hot dish.

Chapter 5: What are the community responses to the ICE raids in Minnesota?

968.872 - 973.317 Dana Ferguson

Hot dish. Are we saying specifically tater tot hot dish?

0

974.427 - 1002.375 Dana Ferguson

I feel like there's too much variety yeah it's gotta be so the basic ideas of a hot dish are you have some kind of like meat vegetables and then like creamy soup or other sauce to keep it together and then of the tater tot variety you top it with tater tots oops sorry so you get a bite and it's like crunchy potato action creamy sauce veggie meat very good for winter

0

1003.992 - 1006.83 Kimberly Adams

Neither one of those sound appealing to me. Oh, no.

0

1007.3 - 1008.482 Drew Jostad

Oh, Kimberly doesn't like cheese.

0

1008.622 - 1027.31 Kimberly Adams

We have other foods here. I'm going to go with the hot dish just because I don't like cheese. That doesn't sound appealing to me, but I'm sure I think I'm going to be in Minnesota in a couple months, so maybe I can be reformed.

1028.812 - 1035.282 Dana Ferguson

Don't get lutefisk. What is lutefisk? It's fish cured in lye.

1038.147 - 1039.99 Kimberly Adams

Okay. It's something.

1040.991 - 1041.312 Drew Jostad

Yeah.

1041.372 - 1046.599 Kimberly Adams

Look, I'm not here to yuck somebody's yum. If they like it, I love it. All right. What's next?
