Today, I am blessed to have here with me Lisa Tamati. Lisa is an extreme ultra-endurance athlete with 25 years of experience competing in the world's toughest endurance events and leading and participating in expeditions. She is also a documentary maker, has hosted her own TV show, and is a human potential expert, mental toughness, resilience, health, and running coach.
She is the author of three best-selling books, "Running Hot," "Running to Extremes," and her latest book is "Relentless - How a mother and daughter defied the odds." A book telling the one in a million comeback story of bringing her mother Isobel back from the brink of death after a major aneurysm left her with massive brain damage at the age of 74 to full health within three years and against all odds and medical prognoses.
Lisa is also a podcast host at the globally top 200 ranked show in health, fitness, and medicine, "Pushing the Limits" she is a renowned and experienced international Speaker, director, and co-founder of Running Hot Coaching and the genetic optimization program Peak Epigenetics and Workplace Wellness programs.
In this episode, Lisa talks about her background and how she got involved in the world of professional ultramarathon running. She dives into her abusive relationship and describes how to overcome a traumatic situation by managing your breath and finding a way to feel control. [00:55] All About Lisa Tamati and Being A Professional Ultramarathon Runner
Lisa is a professional ultramarathon runner.
She has done over 70,000 kilometers around the earth.
Lisa wasn’t built to run; instead, she decided she wanted to become a runner.
In the beginning, Lisa suffered. However, she got good enough to overcome the adversity.
[07:15] Lisa Was In An Abusive Relationship and Discovered Ultramarathon Running
Lisa was in an abusive relationship in her 20s.
Her relationship had a massive impact on her.
Lisa felt hopeless because she was constantly being verbally abused.
Eventually, Lisa recovered from her relationship and got into ultramarathon running.
The comradeship, friendship, and positivity kept her coming back to ultramarathons.
[18:10] What To Do If You’re Going Through A Traumatic Situation
You need to take control of some aspect of the crisis you're going through.
The amygdala is a very primitive part of the brain that does this fight or flight response. Your amygdala will takeover during something traumatic.
So, you need to get control of your breath.
The exhale will be critical; the exhale tells your body that it is not in danger.
In fight or flight, your prefrontal cortex turns off.
Next, look at what you can control.
[23:35] Relentless: How A Mother and Daughter Defied The Odds
Six years ago, Lisa’s mom had a massive aneurysm.
When they got to the doctor, they said she only had a migraine.
After six hours, Lisa’s mom got a CT scan; they found out a massive vessel had burst.
At that moment, they didn’t think she would survive. An air ambulance took twelve hours to arrive.
To stay calm, Lisa figured out what she could be in control of during this situation.
Lisa’s mom was in and out of a coma for three weeks. Eventually, she stabilized, and she survived.
The book Relentless is a mindset book; it’s the mindset that it takes to overcome massive obstacles. The book can be applied in any situation.

Lisa’s mom would eat one meal a day.
Unfortunately, she wouldn’t fast for an entire day.

There are many limitations in the medical system.
You have to advocate, and you have to push; don’t sit there and be polite.
We are taught that doctors are the authority figure, and we need to do what they say.
Remember, there are commercial interests behind the medical system.
