Last week, Rachel, Veronica, and Margarita agreed to have a Double Dutch demonstration and a beauty pageant for the community, but didn't know where to begin. Things began looking up when they met with Mrs. Agnes Miller. They hoped she had the answers they needed to get started. Instead, she challenged them to do what they could and told them to come back to her in two weeks. They had to show Mrs. Miller some progress so the girls knew it was time to get to work.

Aunt Marion smiled because secretly she and some of the other mothers had been working on dresses for the pageant for weeks. In fact, except for a few finishing touches, they were almost done. how's the jumping coming along she asked the girls rachel decided to boast a bit it's coming along great i think i'm getting better veronica added but some days i'm not so sure you're a lot better than you think rachel said encouraging her thanks but i still need a lot more practice

She handed the ropes to Veronica while Margarita and Shonda started laughing. It was easy to see that Veronica wasn't in a laughing mood. She threw the two pieces of rope to the ground, wiped her hands together, and began walking away, as though signaling she was through. It's a stupid game anyway. Rachel was coming out the door when she met Veronica on her way back inside. Where you going? We need to practice. We can't do a demonstration if we're not ready.
She's going in because I told her she's supposed to turn, Alyssa called out. Rachel couldn't understand the problem. So what's the big deal, she asked Veronica. Veronica seemed less upset than just moments ago when she had thrown down the ropes. I said it was my turn, and Alyssa laughed and put those ropes in my hands. I don't know how it's done in Chicago, but at my school, we have a rule. If you don't turn, you don't jump.
