Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Now, Terence, I promised the listener.
I threatened them with two reports from you. This one is one for Niall, I believe. Yeah, Niall's going to love this one. I was down Niall's part of the country. I was in Blainrow Golf Club, a lovely spot in the Garden County of Ireland. I was meeting the club captain, Gary Kennedy, who was just about to start his round.
And I wanted to chat to him about his playing partner, a most unusual partner called Jake. Yeah, well, have a listen.
Chapter 2: What makes Blainroe Golf Club a unique golfing destination?
Terry, you're very welcome to Blainrow Golf Club.
Thank you very much indeed, Gary. It's the first time I've been here. It's beautiful down here.
It's a gorgeous golf club. It's the jewel of the East Coast and not everybody knows about it, so we're very proud of it.
Now, I've caught you just before you're going out on your round of golf and I want to chat to you, not about you or the golf club, but your partner, your playing partner today.
The famous Jake. The famous Jake.
Tell me a little about Jake.
Well, Terry, we have a couple of rookeries here, quite near the first tee and the tenth tee and various places on the course. And one of the rooks has made friends with me for reasons unknown, and he has become my golfing partner. He's almost like a little caddy.
Well, tell us your story then.
I met him about a year ago here on the first tee and I noticed he was braver than the other rooks and he has taken to walking the fairways with me as opposed to flying, which is very strange. And occasionally I give him little treats and he'll jump up on the bag and he'll take the treats from my hand.

Chapter 3: Who is Jake and how did he become a golfing partner?
He doesn't fly, no? He walks when he's near me or he jumps up on the bag and he'll sit on top of the bag on top of the driver.
Right.
And I give him little treats from time to time and we've just become good friends over the past 10 months.
Now, did you befriend him or did he befriend you?
I think he definitely befriended me because there are a lot of rooks here, but very, very, well, none of them, none of the others will get that close to the humans.
He doesn't seem to be put off by other golfers there because we're watching some of them there putting on the green quite close to us here. And there are some who have just moved on by us.
No, he just sits there and he's happy. He's keeping an eye on me. He knows that if he stays there, he's probably going to get a little bit of a biscuit or something. You have to be careful what you give them to. They're like dogs. They love chocolate, but chocolate's not good for them. So I've read up on that, so I don't give him anything that would be bad for him.
But he likes the plain biscuits.
Yeah. That's his favourite, though, isn't it?

Chapter 4: What is the story behind Jake's friendship with the club captain?
And that's the interesting thing about him.
Can you tell him apart from the other rooks here?
With some difficulty, with some difficulty. He has one or two small characteristics. He has a little grey fleck under one wing and when he does fly, I can see it and I know it's Jake. Yeah, he's still preening himself. He's still preening himself. Well, it's slightly raining today. And would you recognise his voice then? He doesn't speak a lot.
Okay.
In fact, rarely. And some of the others are very noisy. Right. But Jake, I think I've only heard him make a sound twice.
There have been a couple of others here around, but none of them have got as close as Jake has.
No, no, no. That's the peculiar thing about him. And to me, I'm quite flattered that he finds me a safe partner. How long has this been going on? Well, just under a year, I'd say, at this stage. But it took him the first three months to decide it was safe.
And you forced to notice him. Tell me about that day.
I just noticed that he was on the ground beside me, which is risky for them because they're wild animals and their first thought is for defence. And when he lands beside you, he's a little bit more exposed. It takes him a couple of metres to get airborne and get going. And I thought to myself, that's strange. And I gave him a treat and he got closer and then we just became friends.

Chapter 5: How does Jake interact with other golfers on the course?
Come on. Up here. Come on. I've got a bigger one up here for you. He's lost a little bit under the trolley.
Yeah, yeah.
Come on, Jake. Come up here.
I can see that feather that you mentioned earlier on too.
I see it, yeah. He might have been in a bit of a fight. Gray crows are very aggressive with them. Yeah. And they don't feel safe. Now, there he's gone. Yeah, but you'll find... When he's flying away... You'll find he spotted a gray crow. He took off there and he's gone 15 metres away from us into a tree. But that's probably because there's a gray crow around us somewhere. Right.
And he's getting where he can't be seen.
I was asking you there before he appeared about a partner or a mate. You were saying just the two that, and this is probably one of them here, is it?
Well, I guess so. My technical knowledge isn't sufficient to know what I'm looking at. I'm not sure if it's Mrs. Jake or Mr. Jake. Right.
But he hasn't brought a family along, though.

Chapter 6: What are the dietary preferences and habits of Jake the Rook?
But I believe this nest here, you see the one... I saw that. We were looking at that earlier. I think that's his, but I'm not certain.
Okay.
Okay, that's unusual too, just for him to be in a nest there on his own. Oh, although I can see a couple of other. Yeah, I see one here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And, you know, they live for many, many years. I believe they live for up to 20, was it? Yeah.
Yeah, or over that.
Yeah, yeah. And the unusual thing about the rooks, too, and crows in general, is that they remember your face.
Well, that's the most amazing thing. Like I think I said, it doesn't matter what colour I'm wearing. It doesn't matter what time of the day I go out. He can pick me out of the four people I'm with. We're usually four people in a golf game. And he goes straight to me, as you saw there. He just appeared and he sat there looking at us and...
And I can hear them in the background there as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the other one that's on the ground is still on the ground, but... Yeah, he's just not prepared to get near it.

Chapter 7: How does Jake's behavior differ from other rooks?
It's a survival thing with them. They're very, very careful.
They're just throwing out a piece of biscuit to that one there as well. And we've lost... No, no, he's there.
I see him, yeah, yeah.
He, uh... He's probably just waiting for you now to get ready to... He thinks we're going up the first fairway now.
He's probably saying, come on, hurry up.
Does he stop in any particular places?
Yes, he won't go across the road. Right. Because our second and up to our ninth hole, they're on the other side of the road. Right. And there are other rookeries up there and he's not part of that clan and he takes a risk if he goes into other rooks' territory. Right.
And the same thing over at the 13th hole, he won't go past the 13th, he waits for me down on the 14th because there's another rookery up there of which he's not a part.
Right, and his second part, there are now three of them here. There's Jake and those two, there's one here and the cherry blossom tree there behind you. And he's watching us as well all the time. It is a bit like a scene from The Birds, but there are only three of them here.
