In the winter of 2001, inside of a Southern California police department, a fax machine in the corner of the room suddenly came to life. A moment later, a few pieces of paper fell into the tray, and an officer walked over and began reading them. As he did, his eyes went wide. The fax was a gold mine of evidence for an ongoing murder investigation that had begun to stall, so this fax was a major breakthrough. But as officers rushed over to see the fax for themselves, they all started to feel like something was off about the fax – it just seemed too good to be true. But regardless, the police followed up on the contents of the fax, and sure enough, it led them to their killer.
