But that all changed on the night of January 20th, 1931. By the next morning, William had become one of the most talked-about men in England. for all the wrong reasons. Next time, I'll walk you through the investigation and the trial that followed. It gripped the entire country and ended up making legal history.

If you'd met Julia Wallace in 1931, you would have assumed she came from money. She was soft spoken and refined, the kind of person who painted watercolors and hung them in her front room. She sang, played piano, and even spoke fluent French. But all of those things were learned and And Julia spent most of her life making sure nobody Ever found out the truth? The real story is that she was born Julia Dennis in eighteen sixty-one, out in the North Yorkshire countryside into a big farming family. When she was about ten, her mother died. Not long after, her father, a farmer named William George Dennis, lost the farm. He started running an inn to keep food on the table, but by eighteen seventy five, when Julie was thirteen, he was gone too.
So before she'd even turned fourteen, Julia was an orphan. With no money and no real future, and she had a few older brothers and sisters who were scattered around the country, but none of them could take her in.
