What uncertainty surrounds President Trump's trade strategy at the start of the episode?

Phil Dobbie 0:02
The uncertainty we face right now, of course, is because nobody really knows what President Trump is aiming for. Is it to bring industrial production back to America, as he says? In which case, wouldn't he steadfastly stick to his tariffs? But no, he is talking about doing deals. The most recent is an exemption on lots of electronics from China. Otherwise, Apple would have had a shaky year ahead. So does that mean the worst of the tariff news is over? And it's all backtracking from here on. On in. It's Monday, it's the fourteenth of april twenty twenty five. It's the morning call from Nab. Good morning. Well it was quite a week last week, wasn't it? It might have felt at times like US equities were tanking, but last week actually after a false start on Monday was the week when it started to make things up a little bit.
Phil Dobbie 0:44
So the Nasdaq climbed two point one percent on Friday. It was up seven point three percent over the week, but that is still four point two percent down from the start of the month. The S and P gained five point seven percent last week, uh its best week actually since November twenty twenty three. Almost five percent up for the Dow over the week as well. Uh we had small falls in Europe though. So the DAX was down one point three percent last week, but down nine point six percent since the start of April. The Eurostock six hundred was down one point nine percent last week, the ASX two hundred down just naught point three percent. But the Hang Sang falling four point seven percent over the week, thanks to Monday's fall.
Phil Dobbie 1:20
In fact, uh just like stock markets everywhere, they spent the rest of the week clawing. Back some of that lost ground, but it is down nine point nine percent for the month so far. And it's the bond story, isn't it, that's got everyone worried. So ten year treasuries last week, up almost fifty basis points compared to thirty for ten year Gilts, twenty-seven for Aussie ten years, and a small fall in the yield for ten year bunds. Aussie ten years moved the most on Friday up almost sixteen basis points. On FX, well, the DF uh DX1 Y was definitely weaker, down one percent on Friday and two point eight percent across the week and four percent since the start of the month. The winners last week were the Swiss franc up five point three percent, the Aussie dollar up four point one per cent, the Kiwi dollar not far behind, following that the Euro climbing three point six percent across the week last week.

How did U.S. equity markets react to the latest tariff exemptions for Chinese electronics?

Phil Dobbie 2:06
And commodities good for gold last week, it rose seven percent, Brent crude was down one and a quarter percent, and iron ore prices fell three and a half percent across the year. across the week as well. So what next? Well, the big news, of course, well it was sort of watered down about over the weekend, but on Friday the back down on tariffs in China against China, which means you won't be having to pay several thousand dollars for an iPhone in the United States because Donald Trump told us late on Friday that smartphones and laptops from China are exempt from the tariffs for now, anyway, uh Nab Sky Masters is with me. I mean this could be quite big. Well you would have thought it would be if it wasn't for the fact that, you know, the the news that Trump is backing down.
Phil Dobbie 2:45
But then Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary in the United States, said on Sunday the reprieve was temporary, uh they'll be coming out with more targeted measures. So the question is, uh, you know, how long is that gonna uh apply for? But I mean, you know, if we look on the positive side, the fact that there there are some exemptions being created now You know, maybe we can take some solace from that.
Skye Masters 3:07
Yeah, good morning, Phil. Um, I'm I'm exhausted having listened to everything that you've just you've just said.
Phil Dobbie 3:13
