What did President Trump announce about delayed tariffs for Mexico, Canada, and Europe?

Phil Dobbie 0:01
President Trump has his first cabinet meeting and delays tariffs for Mexico and Canada and reveals just how much Europe is going to be paying, although he's a bit non-specific on some of the detail. Australia's monthly CPI was a bit lower than expected. Rent and housing largely responsible for that. And Q4 CapEx for Australia today. And then there's NVIDIA earnings. It's Thursday, it's the 27th of February 2025. It's the morning call from now. Good morning. Well the US dollar has been on a bit of a journey. It was up over one hundred and six point six on the DXY index. Then it came down by almost naught point four percent. He did pick up a little since Donald Trump's press conference at the start of his first cabinet meeting, but the Aussie is down 0.7% to below sixty three US cents.

That was actually one of the biggest currency moves overnight. The pound is up a little, the euro is down 0.3%. Stocks are mixed, so at the close the day. Is down 0.4%, the S P just in the green, the Nasdaq managing in the last hour to climb to 0.3%. We did have uh Salesforce earnings. They missed ever so slightly, uh, and they are eight percent down in after hours trade. And we've got an NVIDIA, Nvidia earnings now as well. So uh thirty-nine point three billion versus market expectations of thirty eight and a quarter billion, so earnings per share. Share 89 cents above estimates of 84 cents. Look, this is where some of that revenue is coming from. Data center revenues 35.6 billion against estimates of thirty-four point one billion.

So shares up at least three percent almost straight away in after hours trade. So back to those indices which weren't looking so good in the US at the close. Things doing somewhat better though in Europe, where uh we've got a one and a half percent rise in the Eurostocks fifty at close, the DAX is up one point seven percent, the FTSE one hundred up naught point seven percent. Um we haven't got the uh NVIDIA uh earnings results yet.

How did the US dollar, DXY index and major currencies react after the cabinet meeting?

Phil Dobbie 1:54
Bond yields are slightly lower, down four basis points for ten year treasuries, down two basis points in Germany as well, down five in France and much of southern Europe. Aussie ten year yields down to four point three six percent yesterday, nudging a couple of basis points higher than that on futures overnight. And oil Is down a little again, a third of uh one percent off WTI, half percent off Brent, which is down to seventy-two sixty. Uh and uh Comics Gold is up a third of one percent as well. Actually, since the start of the year, it's up a little short of twelve percent, not far off two thousand nine hundred and twenty dollars now. So Nabs Ray Atrill is here and we have some dates and some values from Donald Trump at his first cabinet meeting uh with the

Press squeezed in uh of the uh beginning of a fairly long QA session. He gave us a date for Mexico and Canada when their tariffs are gonna start. That's been pushed back a little bit. And he told us what the tariffs are gonna be on the EU. But not a lot of market reaction, it's fair to say, even though this seems like new news.
Ray Attrill 2:54
Well, I certainly think it is, and um you know, particularly that reference to to asked if he'd made a decision on tariffs in relation to the EU, he says yes, we'll be announcing it very soon and it'll be twenty five percent generally speaking, which is. I love that.
Phil Dobbie 3:08
He said it's going to be announced soon and he actually announced it in the very same sentence. Well at least the sequencing's right. But it's important. But twenty five but twenty twenty five percent, but maybe not on everything. That was the he he left that fairly open, didn't he? He said it's going to be on cars and other things.
Ray Attrill 3:24
Yes, that's right. So uh so we you know we await developments with interest as they say there. I think you know, markets were a little bit relieved to see that the Canada Mexico um twenty five percent tariffs which were due to come in towards the end of next week or middle of next week, remember, have been pushed back. I don't think that's a great surprise. I but um but it certainly elicited a little bit of a reversal in uh the Canadian dollar and we've seen the Mexican peso, for example, um as
