What is President Trump’s plan for a three‑way peace meeting with Zelensky and Putin?

Phil Dobbie 0:01
Well, having met with Zelensky and Putin separately, President Trump is now going to try and get a three-way meeting together and reach peace in Eastern Europe. It's a tough call, but there is more hope than at any point in the last three and a half years at least. Meanwhile, light on data today, but the question remains where next for central banks? The US seems divided, but maybe Jackson Hole will shed some light on that this week. And the Bank of England, are they on hold till the end of the year? And that economic round table kicks. Off this morning in Canberra as well. It's Tuesday, the 19th of August, 2025. It's the morning call from NAB. Good morning. Well, very small moves in US equities, uh up to the close on Monday.
Phil Dobbie 0:38
So we finished with the Dow down naught point one percent. The Nasdaq and the S P were flat, but the FTSE one hundred is up naught point two percent, the Eurostocks fifty down naught point three percent at the close, the CAT car lost about half a percent. The US dollar is up naught point three percent on the DXY, the pound, the euro, and the Aussie all down by a similar amount. The Aussie down to sixty-four point nine US cents this morning. Not much moving in bond yields except at home and in the UK. So treasury yields up two basis points, but at four basis points for ten year guilt in the UK and German ten year bunds down two basis points. Aussie ten years, they were up four basis points yesterday to four point two seven percent, are up another six basis points on futures this morning.
Phil Dobbie 1:17
And oil is rising as well. Uh one percent on WTI, one point two percent on Brent, which is up to sixty six sixty about And it's Nabs Tappa Strickland who joins us this morning in Sydney. So, I mean, we are hearing news in the last hour or so about uh from the White House about that meeting.

How did Zelensky’s meeting with Trump shape the proposed Ukraine‑Russia peace talks?

Phil Dobbie 1:34
Zelensky has met with President Trump. Uh President Zelensky uh wasn't wearing his combat fatigues, he was wearing a suit, so it actually went uh particularly well. Trump was sounding optimistic, really, it seemed. Uh he did talk about providing support. Support. Um he'd spoken previously about uh you know that Ukraine needs to give up any hope of NATO membership and getting back Crimea. Uh but he did talk about security guarantees either from the US or through NATO. Uh he's now talking with European leaders and then in the next few hours it sounds like he's gonna talk to Putin about trying to get a three way meeting, uh Putin, Trump and Zelensky all together. So things are moving forward, so not much of a market reaction unless it's d driving the oil price.
Phil Dobbie 2:18
But I guess, you know, we've got to wait and see what happens.
Tapas Strickland 2:21
Yeah, I think that's a key and good morning, Phil. I think that's the key message there. I think we do just have to wait and see what happens. See, there's a lot of moving parts and I think uh President Trump, uh in his some of his comments overnight, uh while meeting those European leaders, he said, I think the European nations will take a lot of the burden, um he said. And he also said uh peace deal is likely to include exchanges of territory between Ukraine and Russia, but added that Zelensky and Putin will have to agree and uh we We do know that at least in statements that President Putin has made uh that he's looking at uh Donetsk and Lohansk and uh at least until most recently Zelensky has been saying he didn't want to um go into those discussions about trading territory.
Phil Dobbie 3:00
And Europe won't want that either, in all fairness either, because Europe will be concerned about what is a defensible position and if he takes too much land, they lose some of the uh some of some of the natural defences and so that that's just not gonna wash.
Tapas Strickland 3:12
So i i so I think it still remains relatively early. I we could get a deal or we could not get a deal, but I think uh until it's actually uh signed and agreed to, I I think there's just a lot of uncertainty there.
Phil Dobbie 3:22
All right, now uh so yeah, oil I mean it's well oil's volatile, I don't know whether it's connected to it or not. But the bond movements are interesting.
