Chapter 1: What personal experiences shaped Kate Ceberano's identity?
So you sit down. I had the ugly conversation with my husband. I'm like, this has been great.
Chapter 2: How did Kate Ceberano navigate the challenges of the Australian music scene?
We've really enjoyed each other. We've really had the very best life you could possibly wish for. I dearly want to get pregnant.
Chapter 3: What lessons has Kate learned from her journey in marriage and motherhood?
And I really don't give a shit what you think about that.
Hi, I'm Kate Langbrook. There are some guests where the conversation begins before the microphones are even turned on, and Kate Sobrano is absolutely one of them.
Chapter 4: How does Kate Ceberano define creativity and its impact on her life?
This is a slightly unusual episode of No Filter, a very personal one, because Kate Sobrano and I already know each other, and I think you can feel that intimacy almost immediately in this chat.
What unfolds is less a formal interview and more two women sitting down together to talk honestly about creativity, ambition, ageing, marriage, motherhood, music, and what it actually costs to build a life as an artist.
We talk about the opportunities Kate turned down, the career highs and heartbreaks, the pressure of constantly reinventing yourself and why, at nearly 60, she feels more certain of who she is than ever before.
Chapter 5: What sacrifices has Kate made for her artistic career?
There are stories about Melbourne in the 80s, punk music, motherhood, Carly Minogue, Tom Cruise. coconut cake and the strange intensity of surviving four decades in the spotlight while still remaining entirely yourself. It's also funny, theatrical, emotional and completely unpredictable because this is Kate Sobrano.
Chapter 6: How does Kate reflect on her past opportunities and regrets?
I am looking forward to this so enormously, not just because I think you're a true ornament to this country, but also I have a lot of love for you. And that comes through a personal relationship that we'll touch on later. Some of the listeners will already know and some may be, oh.
Chapter 7: What insights does Kate share about aging in the spotlight?
What could it be? Kate Sobrano. Leave them hanging on a thread, darling.
Chapter 8: How does Kate envision her future and the legacy she wants to create?
Leave them hanging. Welcome to No Filter.
Oh, I'm very, very happy to be here. This kind of feels grown up and beautiful to be sitting, actually talking to someone who I know and love, as opposed to someone who is interrogating me. Right, okay. You know, I've been for 40 years at the other end of misfired questions. And I say misfired because they're like, they usually do them around me to get one single answer. Right.
It's like a volley of... Are they looking for an answer? I think what people are trying to discover usually when they ask an artist any questions is... why are they the way they are? Yes.
I don't reckon that's a, it's almost like it's kryptonite to the artist because I think if you try to too carefully unpack that, you leave your flanks a bit open and a part of you feels, well, I do anyway, a part of me feels undressed and sort of a strange freak because I can't really explain what happened or when it happened exactly. They always want a very specific time and a place.
I heard Rikki Lee say to you, you don't want to show how the sausage is made.
Clever. Yes. Isn't she a spunk? Like seriously, she's a very wise and a natural artist.
Yes. And on stage she has a lot of what you have on stage, which is this ā incredible giving of herself you have this the the first time i saw you on stage which strangely though i've seen a lot of gigs and i've said this to you before i hadn't seen you i think i'd seen you as part of lineups or whatever but i've never seen you as a solo artist right
And when I saw you, it was with your tour that you did with the symphony, with the orchestra. Right. And I was so astounded, A, at my own cultural ignorance at not having seen you earlier, but that stuff just happens, but also at the power and range and... freedom on stage of you that I remember sitting there thinking, she could perform at the Milan Opera House. I remember thinking that.
You weren't singing opera, but you could.
