Greetings, gentlemen. I'm really excited for Philly this week. I think the Philly fans are going to be extra hostile with their Sixers and their Flyers having very unceremoniously exited the premises and the Phillies stink.
If we learn anything, they're just going to take it out on Matt. DJ pie is here as well. Hello, DJ.
Hey, Sully. Thanks for having me on your program. Looking forward to the PGA championship, man. CC. It's going to be a great week in Philly. I'm ready. It is. Hopefully your fellow birds fans are going to lift you up on their shoulders and carry you to a great week.
Fly Eagles fly.
We got a lot to talk about. Today's show is, of course, brought to you by our friends at Titleist and the new GTS drivers. We've seen them all over tour since they launched in late March. Over 50 PGA Tour players have already put a GTS 2, GTS 3, or GTS 4 driver in the bag. And starting this week... You'll be able to get yourself dialed with GTS driver fittings kicking off Wednesday, May 13th.

Chapter 2: What are the main storylines heading into the PGA Championship?
And stay tuned to Titleist social channels for more GTS updates as well. We've got a ton of great pictures, a ton of great content around this one. As soon as you lay eyes upon this thing, you're going to want to get a fitting yourself. Titleist.com, find a fitting near you. Deej, what are we getting into today?
We're going to talk about the contenders, man. We're going to talk about the guys who are going to be vying for the Wanamaker trophy this week up at Aronamake. I feel like, you know, in some of the previews, we've dashed past people a little too quickly. So we're going to double click on just where's everybody at? What's the state of play for some of these big names?
Maybe give another couple additional names to keep an eye on. But, Solly, first, I think we're going to go through the mink, Aronamake Country Club.
we are i'm going to give a little crash course on aeronamic assuming you haven't od'd uh on aeronamic content leading into this week if you're just now getting caught up this is the first major championship at aeronamic since who won in 1962 does anyone remember gary player i think i said aeronamic country club by the way i'd like to issue an immediate man aeronamic golf club
First mea culpa of many. That's a record correction on this preview episode. Donald Ross golf course that opened in 1928. Gil Hance, of course, performed a restoration of the club in 2017. I got a lot of great info from Jeff Shackelford's newsletter here on the golf course. I didn't know this prior to reading this, though. The mink was scheduled to host the 1993 PGA.
but withdrew because a seven-year waiting list rendered the club unable to meet non-discriminatory requirements. It had no minority members. In 1990, they had to withdraw and were going to be unable to host the 1993 PGA Championship.
That was in the wake of the Shoal Creek stuff.
That was in the wake of the Shoal Creek stuff. But Crooked Stick was the next one up after that one, and it was in the same boat and whatnot. So interesting. I knew absolutely none of that. But also, side note, I learned the 1994 PGA was scheduled to be at Oak Tree in Oklahoma, but it moved to Southern Hills because of the financial collapse of Landmark Land Co., That happened relatively short.
So twice Southern Hills has been called on to host a PGA championship at somewhat last minute.

Chapter 3: Which players are considered top contenders for the PGA Championship?
Do you see, I remember walking with you when you were playing in the pro and with Kevin Kisner at the BMW 2018, I was like, yeah, what do you think about this place? And he was just like, it's a nightmare for me. Like all the bunkers are exactly where I want to hit it. And the example he uses, Dustin Johnson doesn't have to think about any of these bunkers. Uh,
which kind of stuck out to me in terms of like, what, what kind of golf course is this going to favor? And, you know, we only have data from one tournament eight years ago and it was a rain soak week and it's kind of hard to draw from that. And it didn't jump off the page as driving distance is going to rule the day here, but it's,
With this one, again, looking at all the flyovers and having been there in person and experienced the tournament there, I don't see much of any reason for guys to not pull driver on almost all of the par fours and obviously all the par fives. I just don't think there's a ton of thought that's going to go into that. Could be wrong on that.
Maybe some of the bunker punishments off the tee are going to be stronger than what I'm anticipating, but I think it's going to be a bomber's delight. not it's not long enough that you have to like it's not a driver prerequisite to hit the ball far but at the same time like i don't see anything stopping any of the long bombers from using their power to the best of their ability
we might get a little bit of wind looked like maybe 15 to 20 on our gusts and good weather for the most part warming up into the weekend so maybe a little bit more to think about on that front but uh i'm with you i think the it should be a good canvas for the thoroughbreds to to just duke it out right like the the bmw in in 2018 banger leaderboard keegan with the exception of keegan
Keegan, Justin Rose, Horschel, Zander, Rory, Webb Simpson, Tiger, Molinari, Finau, Fleetwood, Fowler, Woodland, JT.
Which, not only thoroughbreds, but great iron players as well, right? Like, not necessarily on that list, and again, this goes to setup and what they'll end up doing with Ruff and all that stuff, but...
Could end up being like an ultra second shot golf course too, which I think gets into some of the interesting stuff you'll see kind of publicized about the bunkers, particularly on, you know, again, the Friday video was great in showing a lot of this stuff off in that Ross was usually very minimal with his bunkers. You know, it was usually a pretty, pretty simple, not easy type of,
bunker setup this one has a lot of like one bunker split up into three parts or four parts which leaves that cool strip in between the bunkers where you might catch some variability of a ball that otherwise would have landed right in the middle of a bunker fault you know fell down to the middle instead getting stuck up on a strip of rough or you know just some added kind of texture around the greens and on some of the landing zones for the tee shot so

Chapter 4: How is the Aronimink course prepared for the championship?
So we'll see which one we get.
Well, here's the most pessimistic and most damning thing I've found about the second shot narrative that you just laid out there, DJs. In 2018, there was a massive decrease from shots played in the 150 to 175 percentage.
Chapter 5: What historical context exists for Aronimink as a championship venue?
Yard bucket and the 175 to 200 yard bucket like mid iron play was greatly reduced at this golf course. There's a little bit of an increase between 200 and 225 yards because of three of the par threes are in that in that area. Three of the four par threes are in that area. But it there's a massive increase like 45, almost 46 percent of the shots of the 2018 BMW were played from 150 yards and in.
And there's some extra length added to this golf course, but players have gotten a lot longer since 2018 to the point where, like, if you go look on DataGolf at the predictive approach bins by a player, like Rory is expected to have 6.7 approaches between 100 and 150 yards, which is up a shot and a half per round per usual.
And he's expected to have only 3.6 approaches between 150 and 200, which is down from 6.2. Almost three shots less per round in a more interesting approach bracket than the shorter one. All of these features on these greens, which make them special, make a lot more sense coming in from farther away than they will from up close. That's the part I'm worried about.
Unless it is massively firm and windy... There's nothing stopping these guys from getting after any hole locations they want to get after. And again, that could make for some exciting birdie runs and some low scores. But the four-day watching window of second shot test, I just don't know if we're going to get that. I don't know.
Yeah.
It's good. That's a, that's a good illustration. We'll see. Hopefully it doesn't play out that way, but that's good to be aware of. See, that's the thing. I'm not, I feel pretty good about like, I'm not going to think it's one thing and then be disappointed when it's another thing.
Okay. I don't want the listeners.
Yeah, man, it's going to be the PGA.
You know, I don't want them to say like, you guys hype this golf course up so much and they're making a ton of birdies. Like it's a great golf course and they're going to make a ton of birdies. That's my, that's my expectation. So if you'll allow me, I'll go through, I'll go through all the holes at varying length. It's not going to be a massive, massive.

Chapter 6: How have past performances influenced player expectations this week?
Yeah. You think Scary Terry puts his thumb on the scale for ā
Championship excellence.
Kerry Haig says, hey.
We can ask him that this week. He'll be at his presser coming up this week.
Do they even have to put the pin on the green? I think those are the questions we should be asking at these types of PGAs. Can they move it just off the green? Take that offline.
um these sixth and seventh holes a couple more short fours 402 yards and 431 yards um some interesting kind of bends and and developments in those holes the eighth i hesitate to call a signature hole but somewhat of a signature hole it's a 242 yard downhill par three it'll be a familiar spot they're going to show a lot of that hole i have imagined because the green almost connects there with the 10th green there's just a small strip of fringe in between uh those two greens but i
I think it's going to be a pace of play log jam in this location as they try to hole out on two greens right next to each other. But great place to watch some golf if you are attending this week. That's one thing with this venue, too. It seems like an absolutely excellent place to watch some golf, especially the way the ninth and 18 holes come back to the clubhouse and run parallel to each other.
Will you call on them to remove the strip, Sully? Between the two greens?
I will not, just because it's going to be a rule. There's probably some rules issue of being on the wrong green and not to call the rules. They don't make any decisions on the road. So this trip is fine. We're going to let this one go. The ninth is the first par five. It's 605 yards, plays back uphill to the clubhouse.

Chapter 7: What strategies will players need to succeed at Aronimink?
This has gone back 27 yards across a road.
Sick trees. Sick trees.
Cool. Just cool setting here. You know, bunkers that kind of cut into the fairway. Just a proper proper ball buster finisher here as well. Again, third hardest hole in twenty eighteen and now is playing longer. I would I would guess this is going to be quite a quite a difficult hole. So that in summary, the fifth hole is eleven yards longer. Seven is thirty six yards longer.
Ten is twenty eight yards longer. Fifteen is thirty yards longer and eighteen is twenty seven yards longer. It's about one hundred fifty yards longer than we last saw it in twenty eighteen.
So effectively, it'll play about 400 or 500 yards shorter.
I was going to say, I don't think that has kept up with driving distances over the last eight years. This raise is not commensurate with inflation. but it's another one of those courses that there's not much more. They could, I don't know even how they found the yards they did. And yeah, I literally out loud over there.
I was like, how are they going to host a major championship here in almost a decade?
And again, who knows? Like I I'm always very bad at predicting the score and they do a pretty good job of suppressing it when they, when they need to and pulling all the right levers. But yeah, For the aeronomic members, they're hosting one PGA Championship over the course, going back to this 2017 renovation. It's one week out of nine years here that they got to play for.
It looks like an absolutely delightful place to play golf. 100%. That's where I'm like, even if the score is 22 under this week, I don't know. I feel like the aeronomic people should be stoked that they have a golf course that's fun to play, above all.

Chapter 8: What are the potential challenges players face during the tournament?
That's good.
But, you know, it's curious what some of these runs would look like if the PGA was in August and not held in spring. But it is in spring, and spring is kicked into full gear, and Roback has you covered. Just absolutely slaying it. They keep coming out with new products. Our closets are overflowing, but I still can't get enough of this. My favorite is the Robax Lightweight Looper Short.
I don't know if you guys have tried this yet. It is so sneaky. It looks like a golf short, but it is basically like gym short material. It is great to wear around the house, but when I just want to go sneak over to the golf course and get... quick 30-minute range session in. I don't have to change. It just serves both functions very well. It's incredible.
Based on your recent video, I don't think you change anyway. You were wearing sweatpants out there.
It was filmed at 8.15 in the evening. The haters can taste it here. but it's got a real button and fly and, and it's, it's a, it's a very nice pair of shorts. They just dropped boxers as well. I'm not going to show you those. I'm not going to model those for you, but they are very, very comfortable. They're made out of the same materials, their performance polos.
They're great for the golf course on a hot day. They bring you everyday comfort as well. Lastly, the Roback tailwind sports shirt. If you're looking to impress the lady in your life, wear a tailwind sports shirt. It's soft, but lightweight. It's very comfortable. It's,
It's a perfect casual button-down you can throw on for a post-round, for a meal in the clubhouse, or for date night or anything like that. Just a nice dress shirt, the performance material. It's fantastic. It's wonderful. You should try it out. Roback.com, R-I-H-O-B-A-C-K.com. Use code NLU for 20% off your first order through the end of the week. That's the aeronomic recap.
That took a little longer than I was expecting, but I feel sufficiently prepared to dive in here for the PGA Championship preview.
Glory's last shot, baby.
