Laurels for spring. Groundbreaking.

Oh my gosh! You have to do it. You live for fashion.

Hello and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Leigh Campbell and every week I'm joined by an expert and I've got a friend here you might recognize. It's Kelly McCarran. Yes, she's with me every single week on YouBeauty, but did you know before she was freelancing and in the world of YouBeauty, Kelly was in-house at a fashion brand in the marketing department? I don't really even know what that means. I kind of understand what marketing is and how it's different from advertising. But having spoken to Kelly off mic, it's a fascinating world of content, but also psychology. So Kelly is going to kind of pull back the curtain on what happens in marketing in a fashion brand, what she learned there, and now what she watches out for as a very happy, colorful shopping consumer.

And later in the episode, of course, bougie to budget, and Kelly has bought three of the most obscure items that I immediately want to buy. Kelly McCarran, welcome to Nothing to Wear. You're not on the wrong show. I sit with you every week on YouBeauty. I've done that for eight years. But you're on the fashion podcast for the second time. So for those that maybe don't listen to YouBeauty or don't know much about you, tell the audience who you are and where you've worked and what you've been doing for your adult life. My goodness,
Kelly McCarran 2:13
that's a very long week. It is. Whenever someone asks me that question, I'm always like, I don't have an elevator pitch, so I'm always like bing bong. Who knows? Who knows? So I freelance here at Mamma Mia, which a lot of people find surprising. They think I actually work here, which I like to, I'm like, yeah, well, I'm quite a big personality, so that doesn't surprise me. But I freelance here with Mamma Mia. I've been doing the beauty podcast with the lovely Leigh for almost eight years, which is... Wow. Wow. But like slay. Slay. We have been killing it for eight years. That's amazing. And we look the same. Most pods. But we just continue to thrive. Yes. So I do that one day per week at the moment. We do our vodcast on a Tuesday generally.

And the other three work days, because I have Fridays with my son, I do a little merry little mix. So I've been freelancing for six years now. Before then, I worked for almost 15 years in marketing across beauty and fashion, both in-house and for media companies or whatever. Yeah. And freelancing, I still do a little bit of marketing. So I do marketing consulting, but I also do, yes, podcasting. I do hosting or emceeing events and a bit of content creation as well.

You're a busy girl. You're a very busy girl. I like to have lots of little... Fingers are in all

pies. Yeah. Yummy. So you worked in beauty before you were in beauty media, but you also worked at a big fashion brand for how many years? Almost four. Wow. Okay. And then you've been out of that game for six years, but you came to us and you had so much marketing knowledge and advice. And it's really fun to work with you through the journey of your beauty to see your opinion on marketing behind campaigns for beauty. We're going to get more into that later, but first I want to talk about you personally and your style. What is your style?
Kelly McCarran 4:00
I

don't

have any. You do. My personal style is that when I say I don't have any, it's because I don't subscribe to Cool Girl or Black or I don't particularly just only exclusively shop at certain labels.
