Chapter 1: What are the biggest misconceptions about capsule wardrobes?
For too long, Australian law didn't just fail survivors. It forced them into silence. Nina Fennell is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and a survivor who helped overturn damaging gag laws in the Australian justice system. She was the driving force behind the campaign that allowed women to finally speak their own names. Her work doesn't just tell stories, it drives change.
Hi, I'm Gemma Bath, host of True Crime Conversations. And this very special two-part episode isn't just about the justice system. It's about what happens when women are finally heard. A raw, honest look at the power of a single voice, how silence is shaped and how women push through it. Hear my conversation with Nina Fennell on True Crime Conversations.

What does the world sound like if you stay away from it? A small show creates a big bubble.
Come play with me.
And at the same time, the most important moments of childhood remain untouched. You're listening to a Mamma Mia podcast.
Whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed. Florals for spring. Groundbreaking. Oh my gosh! You have to do it.
You live for fashion. Hello and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Leigh Campbell. Now, today we have a fabulous guest returning. Her name is Sam. You might have caught her the first time she was on a couple of months ago, and she's here to talk capsule wardrobes.
No, not why you need a trench and jeans and a black blazer and a white t-shirt. Exactly the opposite. She's going to tell us the mistakes she sees her clients make when they're trying to create a capsule wardrobe and what a true capsule wardrobe actually is. Did you know it was coined in 1970? I didn't. I thought it was an internet thing.

Chapter 2: How can you incorporate fun trends into your capsule wardrobe?
I mean, I think AI is going to have a great place in fashion, hopefully, if it can literally help me. I don't know, maybe a hologram of my exact proportions and it pops up there and she spins around like, oh, that looks great. I don't have to try that on. Yeah. I don't know, something like that.
Yeah, no, but I think there's people doing that. I think like Zara and that are doing that at this point in time. You can try on a picture of yourself and your proportions. So I think that's great. And even as a content creator, I mean, I would absolutely love it if I could just clone myself. Oh, totally. And just be like, here's all the educational, here's everything in my brain.
Hair and makeup's done, off you go, robot. Film the content. Exactly.
But it's my voice, my, like, you know. But in advertising of products feels very weird. People need that human contact.
Totally.
Honestly, I think. It's an interesting space. Yeah, it really is interesting.
All right. So that's the future with the robots. What else? Anything from the good old days?
Oh, 90s. Like it's absolutely everywhere. Have you seen, it's called The Love Story with Carolina Bessette? I haven't watched it, but I need to. It's absolutely blew up the internet.
Okay. I know.

Chapter 3: What mistakes do people commonly make when creating a capsule wardrobe?
I don't know if she has a capsule wardrobe, but I'm assuming not. She is very flouncy, floral, very feminine. I don't think I've ever seen her in jeans. So can she have her own capsule wardrobe?
Of course she can. So a capsule wardrobe is just about having those core pieces that you cannot live without, that you need to get dressed in the morning. So she might love a floaty dress. She needs that floaty dress in her wardrobe. And whatever then she pairs back with that, a denim jacket, some cowboy boots or something. She can have those items that you constantly reach for.
What are you reaching for? Yes, it's so true.
It's your 10%. So maybe without the jeans, she's subbing in a beautiful maxi skirt when she's not wearing her dress and that's her capsule.
But it's making sure that those items are thought about, they're intentional and they're long-lasting because you don't want to be constantly buying those floaty dresses all the time and then you have a wardrobe full of items that you're never going to wear. But it's your capsule.
So you're only supposed to have one. I mean, I know there's no rules, but if that's your look, Would you recommend or do you find that I guess people have maybe three pairs of jeans if that's their thing and three floaty skirts if that's their thing?
Yeah, so you have to think about the capsule wardrobe like term feels really restrictive. Doesn't it? It's not supposed to have a number attached to it. It's not supposed to have a style attached to it. It's not supposed to have a colour palette attached to it. It's who represents you. Yes. And it's also a capsule collection concept.
It's not a capsule wardrobe in terms of that's my only 15 items and that's it. Right. So it's the essentials, the building blocks.
The foundations.

Chapter 4: How does personal style influence a capsule wardrobe?
But it took me three black blazers to realise it's not the blazer, it's the whole category. Oh, it could be. It just doesn't, I'm not a black blazer.
It could be the fact that it's something structured, you know. So it could be that structure or something that just makes you feel like a boss, you know, or however you want to feel that day. So it might not be a black blazer. It might just be a silhouette. It might be super feminine or androgynous.
Yeah, I feel like, yeah.
But black blazers, again, it's one of those items that we've seen decade after decade after decade. So now it becomes a classic. So how do you define a classic? Yes. But even if it's a classic in the industry, you don't have to own one if it's not your style. Oh, my God, no. And I feel like that's seven years doing practice in capsule wardrobe.
I feel like that is where people do kind of get it wrong.
Yeah, everyone comes to you and say, okay, I've got all the things that I saw on the Pinterest board. Why isn't it working? Yes. Okay, so we understand that a capsule wardrobe is individual for everyone. But then at the speed of light these days, trends, micro trends, cottagecore, I don't know, all these trends come and go.
Can a person nail their capsule wardrobe and still buy into trends or, you know, enjoy trends? Yes, definitely.
Because you've got your core pieces and then you can mix and match. You can buy those trend pieces. That's what I love to do. Snake print shoes with my classic black blazer and jeans. Perfect. I love to add, me personally, I love to buy into the accessories when it comes to a trend. Or what I was saying earlier, the blue. Maybe I'll get some blue nails or a blue phone case.
But if you love trend, then yeah. But I think it's just being a capsule wardrobe really is about being intentional with your purchases, you know. It's identifying that, yes, that is a trend. Yes.

Chapter 5: Can a capsule wardrobe include trendy pieces?
I tried to keep it.
Not shoes, just clothing.
Just clothing.
Yeah, so like top and bottom cover. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, so I try to keep ā that doesn't work for me. I love fashion. But as I say, if you're in a career that you only ā like, you know, you're a nurse and you're in uniform. Yes. Do you need that much?
That's so true.
You have to, again, like then refer it back to you.
But clever for you to distill it that way because you kind of stripped everything back, worked that out and then added from there. Yes.
So I really advise my clients take a step back.

Chapter 6: What role does color play in a capsule wardrobe?
Yeah, I'm wearing a barrel jean, you know, so I love anything that adds a bit of structure, that adds a different element to that design, you know, that just elevates it.
So it doesn't have to be a straight leg because it's in the middle, you know. Yeah, it doesn't have to be boring.
Or it doesn't have to be a crisp, white shirt. I know. I hate crisp.
It just doesn't look good.
It doesn't look good on me and it makes me look ill. It's not great with my skin tone either. Yes, I mean I love a white shirt but I don't want them to be so crisp. Yeah. So I got rid of all my white shorts at the beginning. What's your version of it? So mine is just a cream silk shirt with a split at the back. Love it. That does me. Great.
You know, but then that person maybe really love a white shirt. So you love that. You go for it. Yes. I love a cream shirt. Yes. With a bit of sheen to it and a bit of texture.
Yeah, a bit of texture. The one thing I have, I don't think I've ever seen on these capsule wardrobes, colour. It's all very neutral. So how do we, if we love colour... Or we're drawn to colour, but we want to simplify our wardrobe by way of captioned wardrobe. Can it be done?
Yes, of course it can. Again, there's no mention that your captioned wardrobe needs to be beige. But I feel like that's where the whole social media comes in. It's got to mix and match, so it has to be boring and neutral. But I would, I always do, if you love colour, I would always suggest creating like some kind of colour palette. So that they all sit together harmoniously.
Because that's what a capsule wardrobe is about as well. It's making sure that your pieces fit together, style together for loads of different occasions.

Chapter 7: How can you adapt your capsule wardrobe for different life stages?
You might be in your new mum phase. So your capsule is completely different at certain times of your life. So it evolves.
It's very true, it does. But I think if you can kind of look back or take a bird's eye view, you can still see a common thread as to your personal style. Yes.
Like my personal style is minimal, easy, comfortable. You know, I love monochrome. That's always been there.
So when you got here, you're not just Havianas and board shorts? I mean, yeah, I definitely have the annals, but they're black. Yes, you haven't changed your personal style. You've just adapted to the environment.
Yes, I adapt to the environment. I adapt to how I'm feeling. You know, if I'm not, if I'm, I can wake up one day and feel really bloated or I've put on a few pounds and, you know, and I'm just not going to wear what I was wearing a couple of months ago. You know, so I might just go into elastic waist trousers rather than my jeans. It's still your aesthetic. It's still my aesthetic. It does change.
definitely evolve of how you're feeling where you are in your life yes and i was really strict at the beginning and i went for that core fringe vibe capsule wardrobe yes and that's not me i love fashion so then that's when i started right okay i do love this capsule wardrobe aesthetics but i want to add a bit more interest into this and i started looking at different structured blazers split back shorts i think
Barrel leg jeans. And I wanted the fun. It's like, I feel like a lot of people strip it right back.
Yes, and make it almost boring.
And make it boring and repetitive. But once you know those key bits that you like and that you're constantly, you then add your personality into it.

Chapter 8: What are some recommended winter fashion picks for a capsule wardrobe?
Yes. It's all these questions that you ask yourself. So if I didn't have Instagram, would I still buy Kate shoes?
No, they can tell the label, but if they couldn't, would I not buy it?
Yes. And it's like, will I actually wear it in my normal day-to-day life? If I cannot wear it to the school run, I'm not saying I wear heels. I've completely stopped wearing heels. But if I see a maxi skirt and I'm like, can I wear that?
can I wear that to the bar can I wear it to the school run then yes it belongs in my wardrobe I think for me also I mean I do love shopping but I genuinely or generally love what I've bought now so I just go play in my wardrobe instead just go play with the things you've already bought that's a massive shift that I'm seeing as well it's people it's it's how to style rather than buy so how to style in different ways and there's loads of different things out there the um
yeah dopamine by just playing with playing with your wardrobe and i do a lot of that on instagram as well it's like how to style your wardrobe rather than buy into trends yes and i love it and there is going to be things that i'm going to buy i love fashion i'm not going to stop myself but i'm just more intentional with it i really think i don't take my phone to bed like i said in the last time because that's when i scroll and i buy i did it the other day there after a
I'm getting it back. I love you. Two things. One's getting back. You're still human.
I love it.
So it's just really like, yeah, it's just trying to be more intentional. Yeah, turning on the thought instead of just kind of doing it on autopilot.
It has a mindset.
