Chapter 1: Why should you consider hiring a personal stylist?
You're listening to a Mamma Mia podcast.
Hello and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems and levels off your wardrobe. I'm Leigh Campbell and I have a question I'm going to ask you and I want you to think of the answer. Why haven't you hired a stylist? Yes, you. Why haven't you hired a stylist? Is it because you're just a lawyer or just a mom or just running about your day and not going anywhere special?
That's exactly why you should. They might not be as expensive as you think, and you don't have to head to the shops and hit up all the designer stores and spend thousands of dollars.
In fact, my guest today, Karen, aka Aura Styling, is going to tell us how a stylist can save you money, and if you're not going to get one, how you can act like one at home to wear more of the clothes you already own and identify the gaps.
Chapter 2: What is the number one thing missing in most wardrobes?
Let's get into it. Karen, welcome to the show. I'm excited to have you on for the first time because I've had a little stalk on social and we've got lots to learn. But first, people like you are in the know. So what's all over your feeds and your algorithm right now when it comes to fashion?
and embellishments on clothing. Fringing, I know.
I did not see that coming.
Me neither. What I love about the fringing is it's in so many unexpected ways.
Chapter 3: How can fringing be incorporated into your wardrobe?
So obviously jackets, but then boots, which ties into my bougie and budget. And then also handbags, belts. People are getting so creative in like, I saw Aliyah did a shoe with fringing on it.
Anything Aliyah does is perfect. But it's not really kind of Western-y, theme-y, right? Like it doesn't look too much like you're going to a dress-up party.
No, not when styled right. There's a stylist. Oh, I don't know if she's a stylist, but she's definitely sort of creative influencer. Her handle's for Kanda.
Chapter 4: What vintage handbag styles are making a comeback?
Okay. She just did a bit of a, I guess, styling reel with fringing, but it was like a vintage scarf that she tied around in this very interesting way. So you got the fringe as she spun, but it didn't feel
Yes, it doesn't feel costumey. That's the thing. I'm interested in it. I think it's something I might dabble in, but I do worry that I'll look like I've just stepped out of a Western film.
Yeah, I think so too. I always feel like if you're going to go into, like, say you have a fringe jacket, not then pairing it with, not going whole hog, like pairing it with a boot. Yes. Maybe you're wearing it with a ballet flat.
Yes, something a bit more feminine, like a bow somewhere else.
Yeah, exactly. Like a full contrast.
Yes. Okay. Okay. Gosh, you should be a stylist. Before we get into the actual topic, tell me what's happening with handbags because you've got a flashback.
Yes.

Chapter 5: How can a wardrobe cull save you money?
Okay. This one is really exciting. So this resurgence of 2000s Y2K era vintage bags.
Yeah, the bags from back then. Yes.
So the Chloe Paddington. Yes. Balenciaga City bag. Dior saddlebag. Although, was it Dior saddlebag? I never thought that ever went up.
No, I I agree. I think it's a classic. It's not, you know, it's a unique shape and style, but it's never really gone anywhere.
No, but I think this one that I saw was very much the denim Dior bag. Right, yeah. But I think the one that I love the most is the Chloe Paddington.
Yes.
And it's just so cool.

Chapter 6: What common misconceptions exist about personal stylists?
Oh, did you ever have one? No, I didn't. But now I was going to say, because I'm a big thrifter and secondhand, you can get one of these in decent shape from that era. That. That's what I think. Because a new bag, if you're going full designer these days, isn't just $2,000. Some of them are $6,000 or $7,000 or $8,000.
What were the new Chanel bags going for? $15,000? Forget it.
Forget it.
Forget it. No, I agree. I think it's also a really cool, sustainable, ethical, and more affordable way for someone to get into designer handbags or have that piece that you want to pass down or keep in such a nice way. And it does. It's so nostalgic.
Yeah, and you're not spending as much money. And as someone who's very clumsy and tries to take good care of their things but they don't, if, you know, in the past I bought a really fancy nice bag, new, it's literally like carrying around a newborn. And when you get that first little scuff or scratch, you're devastated.
Now this you're paying, you know, maybe 10% and it's already got its little character and its quirks which often make bags nicer and you don't have to worry so much.
I think so too. You can, I absolutely trash my handbags.
Yeah. I'm so good for like a month. And then I think, you know, I can't always ask for a chair for my bag. No, it's so true.
You're like, can I just get a chair?

Chapter 7: How can you effectively conduct a wardrobe audit?
Yeah. And I mean, I think that's the whole point, right? You know, you buy things to wear them and love them. But you know, someone else has loved it. They've moved it on and it's in decent shape. Or bag spas can do phenomenal things.
Oh, I've never done it.
I bought, I love how we haven't even started yet. I bought a suede Loewe puzzle bag in a back of this weird thrift shop in Paris. And I said, is this authentic? And he said, yeah, yeah, he's the thing, but you know, very dirty. I think it was 130 euro. Stop. It was pretty trash, but it was suede and all the different colors. So I took it home. I think I spent about $200 here.
So what's that like, you know, maybe $600 a lot with the conversion. Yeah. It just looks like a worn in. It's not disgusting. No, that's… The bags are… I sent it away. I brought it back. They brought it back. So we'll have to put a link in the show notes to places like that. Definitely.
That is a find. That's what I think. The best thing with vintage… Because I was thinking about it the other day. Like my entire outfit is from Depop. Okay.

Chapter 8: What tips can help you save money while shopping for clothes?
Love it. My jeans are deeper. And yeah, my jeans, my top. It's such a fun way to engage in something. But also, I don't know, I like that it feels like there's a bit of a part of history. Yes. Especially with that handbag, if you've got a Loewe puzzle bag.
And then so long as you know what you're getting, like it's not going to be perfect and you might be willing to spend just that little bit more to get it to exactly how you want to be. It's always worth it.
And you're still saving thousands of dollars.
Exactly. But what a story. Like I was in the store and Paris found it. I was like, are you sure this is authentic? Yes. Like silly man.
Yeah, I know. I mean, he had rows and rows of like immaculate Chanel clothes. And I'm like in the kind of $2 bin equivalent. But I just love it.
He probably thought he'd never sell it.
He was just like, okay, weird lady from Australia. Well, I feel like I could talk to you forever about vintage bags and default. Maybe we'll do that next time. But after the break, we're going to chat about an expensive mistake a lot of us, 99% of us are making and how you can make us save some money again.
