Chapter 1: What recent legal actions are affecting ICE in Minnesota?
Live from NPR News, I'm Corva Coleman. A federal judge in Minnesota is demanding that the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement show up personally in his courtroom in Minneapolis this Friday. Reporter Willis Ryder-Arnold has the story.
Patrick Schiltz, chief U.S. District Judge, District of Minnesota, has ordered Todd Lyons to appear in court January 30th. Judge Schiltz made the order in response to immigration attorney Graham Ojelabarber's request to justify the detention of his client.
Chapter 2: How is the Trump administration's immigration policy impacting local protests?
The judge is using this case as an example to say that the court is no longer going to tolerate ICE not releasing people when the court orders it to do so.
Minnesota has been the site of numerous protests this month that have intensified following the shooting deaths of two people at the hands of federal agents. Courts have been swamped by immigration cases as a result of ICE's increased presence in the state. If Ojala Barber's client is released from custody, lines will not need to appear in court. For NPR News, I'm Willis Ryder Arnold.
The federal judge's order comes as the Trump administration's top border patrol official is being pulled out of Minneapolis.
Chapter 3: What are the details surrounding the midair collision investigation?
Greg Bovino has been the national face of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown efforts. This comes amid backlash of the killings of the Minneapolis protesters by federal agents. Bovino has insisted, without evidence, that protester Alex Preddy intended to massacre federal agents, but video evidence and eyewitness accounts so far refute that assertion.
President Trump will visit a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa today, and Piers Franco-Ortogna says he'll work to change the subject from the immigration crackdown in Minnesota to the U.S. economy.
The president is expected to visit a local business and give a speech on the economy. His chief of staff has touted the trip as the beginning of what will soon be weekly travel in support of Republican candidates ahead of the midterms. But it's also part of an effort to, you know, wrestle back control of the narrative on his own terms.
NPR's Franco Ordonez reporting. Top federal safety investigators meet today to consider the midair collision between a U.S. Army helicopter and a passenger jet near Washington, D.C. NPR's Joel Rose reports investigators will detail all the things they found that likely played a role in the deadly crash.
Chapter 4: How are severe winter weather conditions affecting the southern U.S.?
The National Transportation Safety Board will meet nearly a year after the mid-air collision that killed 67 people. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in the U.S. in more than two decades. The NTSB is not likely to identify a single cause.
Instead, investigators will lay out all the things that went wrong in the lead-up to the crash, and the board will recommend changes to help prevent a similar tragedy from happening again. Already, the Federal Aviation Administration has taken the temporary restrictions it imposed after the crash and made them permanent.

This is NPR. Forecasters are warning of life-threatening cold temperatures in the south this morning. This comes after the powerful winter storm plowed through much of the country over the weekend. At least 30 people have been killed. The National Weather Service warns temperatures will remain frigid all week in much of the country.
Chapter 5: What issues are TikTok users experiencing with the new ownership?
Forecasters say this could be the longest duration of cold weather that some regions have seen in decades. Thousands of TikTok users have experienced issues with the app since it came under new ownership last week. As NPR's Bobby Allen reports, the problems include not being able to send the word Epstein in direct messages.
People on social media were quick to point it out. Since TikTok got new leadership, the word Epstein was being blocked in direct messages. A company spokesman told NPR it's investigating what may be causing it. Some experienced the issue, others reported that it wasn't happening. It comes just days after a consortium of investors finalized the sale of TikTok's U.S.
business, the deal tapped Trump ally Larry Ellison's firm, Oracle. That made many online speculate that the Epstein glitch was a top-down directive, but the company says not so. At the same time, thousands of users have experienced videos not loading and view counts not appearing since the transition. The company says it's a data center problem and it's working to stabilize the app.
