Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright.
Chapter 2: What are the details surrounding Don Lemon's arrest?
Independent journalist Don Lemon has been arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles. His attorney is calling it an unprecedented attack on the First Amendment. The former CNN anchor has said he was covering a recent protest inside of a church against the government's immigration enforcement tactics in Minneapolis. The pastor there is an ICE official. NPR's David Folkenflik reports.
What we do know is that the DOJ twice sought to get arrest warrants for Lemon in Minnesota, was turned down by a magistrate and then by the appeals court there. But, you know, Bondi says, you know, in confirming this arrest, she called him part of a coordinated attack on City's Church in St.
Chapter 3: How is the Federal Reserve's leadership changing under Trump?
Paul, Minnesota, and promised more details soon.
It's unclear what the charges are. Lemon's attorney says Lemon will fight them vigorously. Stocks opened lower this morning after President Trump announced plans to nominate Kevin Warsh as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Chapter 4: What recent developments are happening in Venezuela's oil industry?
NPR's Scott Horsley reports the Dow fell about 110 points in early trading.
Kevin Warsh has experience at the Federal Reserve, having served on the central bank's governing board during the Bush and Obama administrations. Back then, Warsh was considered a hawk with a worried eye on inflationary pressures, even when unemployment neared 10 percent. Still, Trump is counting on Warsh to bring lower interest rates.
If confirmed by the Senate, Warsh would replace Jerome Powell, whose term as Fed chairman ends in May. Wholesale inflation in December was higher than expected.
Chapter 5: How is SpaceX planning to innovate with data centers in space?
The Labor Department says wholesale prices rose 0.5% during the month and were up 3% for the year. Asian stocks were mixed overnight, up in Seoul but down in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.
Senate Democrats and President Trump have reached some agreement on what to do for now about funding the government ahead of tonight's shutdown deadline. But it appears there will still probably be a short-term funding lapse through at least the weekend or until lawmakers vote.
Chapter 6: What is Lindsey Vonn's current status ahead of the Winter Olympics?
The spending deal separates funding for agencies like Health and Human Services and Defense. from funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Venezuela is making major changes to its oil industry. Its Congress approved a bill last night that will enable foreign companies to operate the nation's oil wells.
Chapter 7: What weather impacts are expected in the southeast and mid-Atlantic?
Manuel Rueda has more.
After the U.S. raid that led to NicolƔs Maduro's removal, the socialist government's control of Venezuela's vast oil reserves is changing. The bill approved on Thursday night will allow foreign companies to run oil wells in Venezuela and sell the nation's oil, provided they pay taxes. Disputes with the government can now be settled by international arbitration.
Previously, the Venezuelan government had to be the main stakeholder in oil projects, and the National Oil Company was the only entity allowed to sell the nation's crude. Now, the U.S. Treasury has e-sanctions on Venezuela, and American companies will be able to purchase and resell Venezuelan oil.
Manuel Rueda reporting. This is NPR News. SpaceX is said to be looking at a merger with another company Elon Musk founded, XAI, potentially setting them up to launch data centers in space. NPR's Emily Fang reports that one of China's biggest aerospace companies also says it's looking at building data centers in space.
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation is a massive state-owned company that develops everything from satellites to space rockets. It says it's going to focus on space-based digital infrastructure, building up power, intensive computing and data centers floating in outer space to support artificial intelligence demands back on Earth. China and the U.S.
are the primary competitors in space exploration, and according to Bloomberg, Musk's SpaceX wants to launch solar-powered AI data centers within the next two to three years. Under its current five-year economic plan, China is also pouring resources into developing commercial uses for space, including a goal to launch its first commercial spaceflight by 2028. Emily Fang, NPR News.
Lindsey Vonn's status for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games is unclear. The American alpine skier crashed in a downhill race in Switzerland today. She lost control when landing a jump and got tangled in safety nets. Vonn was able to get up and slowly ski to the finish line before being airlifted for medical evaluation. Her first scheduled games are February 8th.
She made a big comeback last season after several years away from ski racing. She is 41. Another winter storm is about to hit parts of the southeast and mid-Atlantic with heavy snow and wind. I'm Kristen Wright and this is NPR News.
