Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump's border czar, Tom Holman, is in Minneapolis, where he said Thursday that the administration could cut the number of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota. Holman arrived in the state seeking to turn down the temperature following the killing of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Preddy by federal agents.

Here's NPR's Ryan Lucas. It's normal after a shooting that involves a law enforcement officer for the FBI and the Justice Department to conduct a civil rights investigation. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanch has said publicly he sees no need to do so in Good's killing. And the FBI is not conducting a civil rights investigation into Pretty's killing either.

That's according to three sources who spoke with me on condition of anonymity. due to the sensitivity of this issue.

The killings of Good and Pretty have led to calls for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign. A spending deal that would keep the government open is on the table. The deal addresses Democratic demands for curbs on aggressive immigration enforcement tactics. There could still be a brief partial shutdown because House members are on recess and not due back on Capitol Hill until Monday.

94.582 - 106.099 Giles Snyder

President Trump was at the Kennedy Center tonight for the premiere of the Melania documentary. NPR's Tamara Keith reports it has a massive promotional budget and an uncertain box office future.

106.34 - 113.951 Tamara Keith

In an interview on Fox News, First Lady Melania Trump said she hopes people will come away from the film knowing her a little more.

114.232 - 128.61 Melania Trump

I know they know I'm a very private person and a very selective person. What I do, what I don't do, when I talk, when I don't talk. And that's my choice, and nobody is in charge of me, and I'm not in charge of anybody else.

Chapter 2: What recent developments are happening with immigration enforcement in Minnesota?

128.89 - 144.805 Tamara Keith

Mrs. Trump isn't just the subject of the film. She's an executive producer. Amazon acquired it for $40 million and is spending another $35 million on marketing. Documentaries don't normally fetch that kind of money. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

Amazon is among NPR's recent financial supporters and pays to distribute some NPR content. Travel on highways and interstates has improved in parts of Kentucky, but the area's hardest hit by last weekend's winter storm still digging out, as Karen Tsar reports from Member Station WUKY.

Roadways in Kentucky were seriously impacted by ice and snow accumulations from this past weekend's winter storm. Governor Andy Beshear said despite below freezing temperatures, the state did, quote, get a little luck, allowing the Kentucky Transportation Department to make enough headway to assist city and county crews.

181.995 - 193.607 Karen Tzar

The way the sun came out for two straight days got the temperature of the roadways warm enough, even though the regular temperature out there wasn't, for our salt and brine to be effective.

193.638 - 203.307 Unknown

The National Weather Service is predicting dangerously low temperatures and more snow in Kentucky through the weekend. For NPR News, I'm Karen Tzar in Lexington.

203.728 - 216.295 Giles Snyder

This is NPR. President Trump says Russian leader Vladimir Putin has agreed to his request not to target the Ukrainian capital and other towns for one week because of harsh winter weather.

Chapter 3: How is the government responding to the recent killings involving federal agents?

216.775 - 237.448 Giles Snyder

Russia, however, has not confirmed that. Russia has been pounding critical infrastructure in Ukraine, leaving many around the country without heat. A former Illinois sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Sonia Massey, a black woman who had dialed 911 asking for help. Sean Grayson was convicted of second degree murder in October.

and has been incarcerated since he was charged in Massey's killing. The U.S. 's last hope for an Australian Open title is out of tennis' first Grand Slam of the year. Christina Kukulia has more from Melbourne.

250.473 - 268.954 Kristina Kukola

Jessica Pegula fought to the very end, but could not outplay Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, who took the semifinal match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, in just over 90 minutes. Rybakina paid tribute to Pegula after the match, saying she was pleased with her game and the six-seat American was a worthy opponent.

269.375 - 277.863 Jessica Pegula

Well, I'm pretty proud that no matter the situation I was leading, and then of course it got very tight, I still stayed there.

278.203 - 291.516 Kristina Kukola

Rybakina will go up against Belarusian world number one Irina Sabalenka in the women's final on Saturday, after Sabalenka defeated Alina Svitolina of Ukraine in the other semi-final. For NPR News, I'm Kristina Kukola in Melbourne.

291.496 - 304.189 Giles Snyder
