What are the current challenges faced by Iranians under dictatorship?
For 47 years, Iranians have lived under a dictatorship many no longer want. Now the country may have reached a breaking point. Iranians have recognized that they need to take matters into their own hands, pushing back against authority. We ask three central questions about how Iran got here and what comes next. Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, is in Minneapolis where he said Thursday that the administration could cut the number of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota. Homan arrived in the state following the killing of Renee Macklin-Good and Alex Preddy by federal agents. Here's NPR's Ryan Lucas.
It's normal after a shooting that involves a law enforcement officer for the FBI and the Justice Department to conduct a civil rights investigation. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanch has said publicly he sees no need to do so in Good's killing, and the FBI is not conducting a civil rights investigation into Pretty's killing either. That's according to three sources who spoke with me on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of this issue.
President Trump is urging Senate Republicans and Democrats to come together around a spending deal that would largely avert a government shutdown over Democratic demands for curbs on immigration enforcement. The White House and Senate Democrats say they struck a deal that seized a funding bill for the Homeland Security Department separated from a package of five other bills. The man accused of spraying a liquid onto Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar during a public event this week in Minneapolis has now been formally charged. Minnesota Public Radio's Peter Cox reports.
55-year-old Anthony Kazmirzak is federally charged with assaulting, opposing, impeding, or interfering with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's official duties. Tuesday evening at a town hall event in North Minneapolis, Kazmirzak ran toward Omar as she was speaking, spraying her with a liquid that the charging document identifies as a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. Omar ran toward him with her fist raised before security tackled him. Then Omar returned to speaking. Kazmirzak, a Minneapolis resident, was transferred from a county jail into federal custody. The charging document says his social media includes posts critical of Omar. The Democratic congresswoman has been a vocal critic of President Trump and his immigration crackdown.

European Union has designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization. Terry Schultz reports that the unit will now be put under sanctions.
It's a move that's been considered for many years, but the recent deadly crackdown by the Iranian regime on anti-government protesters brought all 27 EU governments into alignment in declaring the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization.
What recent events have prompted a shift in immigration policy discussions?
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaya Kallis led the meeting of foreign ministers who made the decision. When the atrocities were clear, then also it was clear that there has to be a very strong response from the European side. The designation freezes all bank accounts of the IRGC held in the EU, criminalizes any interaction with the group, and bans its members from entering the bloc. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz in Brussels.
This is NPR News. A second blast of cold air is in the forecast, even as crews work to restore power to homes in Mississippi and Tennessee, which are still trying to recover from last weekend's storm. The National Weather Service says Arctic air moving into the southeast will cause temperatures to plunge into the teens Friday night. Mississippi and Tennessee account for the bulk of lingering outages, but customers numbering in the tens of thousands still without power in Louisiana. The growing prevalence of artificial intelligence in the classroom is challenging educators to make sure their students are learning, not leaning on AI.
